Islamic Figures Projects

6th Grade – High School

Due Date:  May 23, 2006

          Each student has selected a figure from Islamic history of particular interest.  Information in the project must focus on the person’s life and their accomplishments.

 

            The project MUST be the work of the student, but the student may seek advice and guidance from adults.

 

All projects must contain:

1.      A display board

2.      A timeline of the person’s life

3.      A research report (this can be attached to the board or in a separate folder)

4.      A map of the place where they lived or came from (physical or cultural)

Also:  You may include any pictures/drawings that relate to your person, if available and halal.

 

THE DISPLAY BOARD

 

            Each project must have a display board with a title of the project.  Possible things to display on the board include the country from where the person came, any halal pictures that have to do with the person, books the person wrote, accomplishments in the person’s life, etc.  (Each student is free to come up with his/her own ideas, as these are only suggestions.)

 

THE RESEARCH REPORT

            After you have selected your person and conducted your literature review, a research report must be written in your own words.  This report must include information on:

1.      A brief history of the land in which they lived.

2.      Life and death of the person, things they accomplished, books they wrote, their contribution to people and society, the state of the Muslims at the time, place where they lived, etc.

3.      Name any important contributions of the person – to the deen of Islam, to politics, to history, to medicine, to the arts, etc.

 

TYPING THE REPORT

1.      The report should be typed.

2.      It should be double-spaced and only on one side of the page.

3.      It must be at least five pages long.

4.      It must have a bibliography, in addition to the five pages.  List all sources of information, books, magazine articles, internet, newspapers, videos, interviews, etc.  There must be at least three sources.

5.      It should be placed in a proper report cover.

 

MAPS

 

            All projects must contain at least one map.  They can either be a physical features map or a cultural features map.

1.      Physical Features Map:  If you choose to include this map, it should include rivers, oceans, seas, deserts, and mountains.

2.      Cultural Features Map:  This map includes the capital, several major cities, masjids, and historical sites.  These should be labeled.

 

INTERVIEWS

 

            Each student may be subjected to an interview to establish whether or not they understood the information presented in the project and to make sure lessons are taken from the project and applied to daily life.

 

GRADING

 

            The projects will be graded based on the following criteria:

1.      Were all requirements met

2.      Was the work done by the student and in the student’s words

3.      The quality and accuracy of the information

4.      Creativity and originality

5.      Attractiveness, neatness, and clarity (was it easy to read and understand)

6.      Effort

7.      A possible interview

 

These projects will count partly as an Islamic Studies grade and partly as a social studies grade (particularly for seventh grade and up).  The project will reflect a large percentage of the fourth-quarter grade, particularly in Islamic studies.
