THE LUSTROUS PEARL

The Great Scholar Imam Ahmad al-Dardir

(d. 1201 AH)

Translated by Mostafa Azzam

In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful

      Says the hopeful of the Omnipotent's mercy,

      I.e. Ahmad who is known as "Dardir":

      Praise Allah, the High, the One,

      The Omniscient, the Singular, the Independent, the Magnanimous,

      And the best prayer and salutation

      For the choice, noble prophet,

      And his pure family and companions—

      Especially his companion in the cave.

      This is a splendid creed,

      Which I have named "The Lustrous Pearl":

      Fine, small in size,

      Though tremendous in information.

      It suffices you if you wish to be sufficed,

      For it contains the cream of the science.

      From Allah I hope for acceptance of [my] action

      And benefit from it, then forgiveness of [my] slipping.

      The categories of logical ruling, without exception,

      Are necessity, impossibility,

      Then possibility, the third of the categories—

      So understand; may you be granted the delight of understanding.

      Legally necessary for someone accountable

      Is knowing Allah, the High, so know [that]:

      I.e., [that] one know the necessary and the impossible,

      Along with what is possible regarding Him, how high is He!

      And likewise regarding Allah's messengers,

      To them the Divine's greeting.

      The logically necessary is that which intrinsically does not admit of

      Negation, so beseech [Allah].

      The impossible is everything that intrinsically does not admit of

      Affirmation—the opposite of the first.

      Every matter admitting of negation

      And affirmation is obviously possible.

      Then know that this universe—

      I.e., all besides Allah, the High, the Knowing—

      Is without doubt originated, dependent;

      For change applies to it.

      Its origination means its existence after non-existence.

      The opposite of it is what is called "ancientness."

      Know that being characterized by existence

      Is of the necessities of the One, the Worshipped;

      For it is plain that every effect

      Guides to a cause, so take note.

      That is called an essential attribute.

      Then following it are five negative:

      They are intrinsic ancientness, permanence,

      His self-subsistence—may you attain piety—

      Different from all else, singularity

      In entity, His high attributes,

      And action: so effecting is for none but

      The One, the Overpowering;

      Whoever asserts nature or necessitation,

      Then that is disbelief according to the people of this religion;

      And whoever asserts God-given force,

      Then he is an innovator, so pay no attention.

      Were He not characterized by them, it would imply

      His origination, which is impossible—so be steadfast;

      For it entails actual infinity

      Or circularity, which is obviously impossible.

      So He is the Majestic, the Beautiful, the Master,

      The Pure, the Holy, the High Lord,

      Transcendent beyond incarnation, direction,

      Joining, separation, and misjudgment.

      Then the substances, which are seven to the observer,

      I.e. His knowledge encompassing everything,

      His life, ability, will

      (Everything that is, He has willed it,

      Even if He has ordered its opposite.

      Thus willing differs from ordering, so throw away vain arguing.

      Thus you have learnt four categories

      Amongst created things, so guard [this] position),

      His speeech, hearing, and sight;

      Thus He is the God Who does with choice.

      Necessary is the connection of those attributes,

      Necessarily, constantly—all but life.

      Knowledge and lofty speech

      Are definitely connected to all the categories.

      Ability and will are connected

      To all potentials, o pious brother.

      And know that His hearing and sight

      To every existent known.

      All of them are intrinsically beginningless,

      Because they are not separate from the entity.

      Then speech is not with letters

      And is not with sequence, as is familiar [speech].

      Impossible is the opposite of the aforementioned

      High attributes—so know;

      For were He not characterized

      By them, He would have been known for the others;

      And to whomever other ones apply

      Is the one that has reached the utmost of need.

      Whereas the One, the Worshipped does not need

      Another—how majestic is the Independent, the Powerful!

      Possible regarding Him are: causing existence

      And refraining [from causing existence], causing ruin and causing felicity;

      And whoever asserts that doing the advantageous is necessary

      For God has shown poor manners.

      And have conviction, my brother, in the vision of God

      In the everlasting Garden, without limitation;

      For its occurrence is logically possible,

      And textual evidence has definitely come regarding it.

      Attribute all the messengers with loyalty,

      Truthfulness, conveyance, and cleverness.

      Their opposites are impossible for them.

      Possible regarding them are things like eating.

      Their being sent is a grace and mercy

      To the worlds—how majestic is the Grantor of Favors!

      Mandatory is belief in: the reckoning,

      The gathering, punishment, reward,

      The resurrection, the bridge, the balance,

      The pond, the fires, the gardens,

      The jinns, the angels, then the prophets,

      The houris, the youths, then the saints,

      And every ruling that has come from the Bringer of Good News

      That has become as if granted.

      Included in the Word of Islam

      Are all the rulings that just passed.

      So invoke it much, with etiquette:

      You will ascend with this invocation the highest ranks.

      And make fear outweigh hope,

      And go to your Master without veering.

      Renew repentance for sins,

      And do not despair of the mercy of the Forgiver.

      Be for His favors so grateful,

      And be through His trial so patient;

      For every matter is by destiny and decree,

      And every decreed matter is inevitable.

      So be to Him submissive so as to be safe,

      And follow the way of the learned worshippers.

      Purify the heart of the others

      Through striving, standing [in prayer] in the late night,

      Reflection, and constant invocation,

      While avoiding all sins

      And being watchful of Allah in [all your] circumstances,

      That you may ascend to the marks of perfection.

      And say with humiliation, "My lord, do not cut me off

      From You with anything that cuts, and do not ban me

      From Your luminous mystery which rids of blindness.

      And close with good, O Merciful of the merciful."

      Praise Allah for completion,

      And the greatest favor and salutation

      For the Hashimi and final prophet,

      And his most generous folk and companions.
