Course Description and Goals: The purpose of this course is to enable students to understand the basics in the sciences of our religion that address each aspect of the human being, namely the body, mind, and ruh.  Insha-Allah, major emphasis will be placed on each of the three areas of our din mentioned in the Gabriel hadith.  These include Islam, Iman, and Ihsan. To this end, the students’ understanding will include, but not be limited to, basic ideas in the following areas of Sunni Islam: jurisprudence, tenets of faith, and practical spirituality.

 

Insha- Allah, the content will include, but not be limited to, the following:

 

World War II

Impacts of World War II at home

The Cold War

The postwar years at home

The Kennedy and Johnson years

The Civil Rights Movement and other social movements

The Vietnam War and American society

The Nixon years

The post-Watergate period

The Conservative Revolution

1992-present

Course: Requirements: All students must maintain an Islamic studies notebook.  It must be a three-ring binder divided into five sections:

Section 1 – class notes dated with title

Section 2 – class/home assignments

Section 3 – maps

Section 4 – returned tests/quizzes

Section 5 – chapter handouts: readings, review sheets, miscellaneous

 

Notebooks will be checked and evaluated at the discretion of the instructor.

 

READING, ESSAYS, RESEARCH AND PROJECTS will be an integral component of course.

 

**Grades will be determined by the total point value of all the aforementioned factors and will adhere strictly to the traditional grade scale.

 

Suggested Supplies:  Highlighters for chapter outlines

                                    Colored pencils, markers, or crayons for maps and projects

                                    Scissors

                                    Glue stick or school glue

Students may leave their supplies in a secure place in class or may choose to bring them to class daily.

 

Course Outline: First twelve weeks, World War II to the Kennedy and Johnson Years.

                            Second twelve weeks, The Civil Rights Movement – the present era.

 

Use of Films:  Documentaries will be used as an important tool according to the guidelines set forth by Michigan Islamic Academy.
