Open your frozen foods by cutting a strip off the top of the bag. This makes an excellent, re-usable and free tie for the bag.

Open tins from the base. Contents will come out more easily.

Remember to keep the sell by dates of any products you put in storage jars! Just pop the date in the same jar.

Save the greaseproof paper lining from your breakfast cereals. These make excellent tops for jars of homemade jam.

Invest a little money in an electric travelling jug. Ideal for times when you only want a single cup of coffee!

Household Hints;


Rubber gloves will last longer if you turn them inside out and then stick an adhesive plaster across the finger tips.

Dont just throw old rubber gloves away; cut strips from the cuffs and you have extra strong elastic bands!

Make sure that fluff and dirt stay in the dustpan by spraying the inside with furniture polish - the dust sticks to it.

Empty out the vacuum cleaner bag when it is half full - saves money on new bags.

Keep old bits of soap, grate them and put them in an empty handwash dispenser with some warm water and shake vigourously - free handwash!

Keep large empty soap powder boxes and snip off an angled slice from one of the corners. These are ideal file boxes for the kids, for your accounts, bills and best of all they are free! You can even coordinate them to your room by pasting old wall paper on them!

Gardening Hints


Water ferns with cold,weak tea to keep them healthy.

Keep plastic cola bottles. When trimmed down, they are ideal mini green houses for delicate seedlings in the garden. The removable cap means they can even let ventilation in if the going gets too hot!

Plant mint in a large pot and put this into the soil - it stops the mint running wild!

Make your own garden knee pads for kneeling down from old hot water bottles stuffed with newspaper or old bits of carpet underlay.

Clean dirty fingernails with cheap toothpaste - this is good for heavy smokers grubby hands too.

Cut, hollow stemmed flowers will last a lot longer if you upend them and fill the hollow stem with water before putting them in the vase.

Travelling Hints;


Keep a cheap, throwaway camera in your car. Ideal for a record of any damage or accident claim.

Keep the car tidy on holiday journeys. Fix plastic bags to the back of the front seats. Dispose of the garbage when you stop for rest breaks.

Write down the telephone number of your breakdown company on an envelope with some small change in it. Ideal for an emergency.

Not sure of the route? Simple solution.Record a cassette tape with directions and play it as you drive.

Camping? Take a cheap plastic lettuce spinner with you - ideal when you wash socks and smalls.

Picnic? Put the soft drink tins in the fridge overnight and place these at the bottom of the hamper. The cold tins help to keep the food fresh.
