Postgraduate Degrees by Research

We are particularly keen to attract research students in our major areas of interest, but opportunities for research are available in fields of sociology/anthropology in which current staff have specialist knowledge. Joint supervision is often possible with staff from related disciplines, especially within the framework of the interdisciplinary centres of Comparative International Development, Gender Studies, Regional Business Studies and Health Studies, and we welcome preliminary enquiries about the availability of supervision for any project or field of study.

The research degrees offered are Mphil (minimum registration two years, of which one may be part-time) and PhD (minimum three years, of which one may be part-time). All students who have not previously done a substantial amount of research are registered initially for Mphil, with upgrading to PhD on the basis of written work submitted after the first nine months. Both degrees are also available on a part-time basis to locally-resident students, with corresponding minimum periods of registration of three and four years.

The normal requirement for entry to a research degree is a first or upper second class honours degree in sociology, anthropology or a closely related subject.
