    What is a paper fortuneteller?
A fortuneteller, also called a "cootie catcher", is a game made from a piece of folded square paper. You can use your fortuneteller to make predictions about other people's futures!

    What will you need?
    • A square piece of paper (8 1/2" x 8 1/2" works well)
    • 4 different-coloured crayons, pencil crayons or markers
    • A friend to play with!

MAKING YOUR FORTUNETELLER

Step 1

    STEP 1

Find the centre of a square piece of paper by folding it along each of its diagonals. Unfold the square. The centre is where the two creases meet.
Step 2

    STEP 2

Fold each corner of the square into the centre. It will form a smaller square as shown in Step 3.

Step 3

    STEP 3

    Flip the square over.
    DO NOT UNFOLD IT!
Step 4

    STEP 4

Again, fold each corner into the centre.

Step 5

STEP 5

On each of the triangle-shaped sections, write the numbers 1 to 8.
Step 6

STEP 6

Unfold one triangle flap at a time. Under each flap write a fortune to match up with each number (2 fortunes per flap). Don't forget to close the flaps when you're done writing the fortunes!

Example fortunes:You will be rich. Be careful tomorrow.

Step 7

STEP 7

Flip the square over (number-side down). Colour each of the four square flaps a different colour.
Step 8

STEP 8

Again, flip the square back over (number-side up). Fold in half from left to right. Unfold so that it looks the same as when you started this step.

Step 9

STEP 9

Now fold the square in half from bottom to top. This time, do not unfold.
Step 10

STEP 10

Insert your left thumb and index finger under the flaps on the left side of the rectangle. Insert your right thumb and index finger under the flaps on the right side of the rectangle.

Step 11

STEP 11

Push the top left corner and the top right corner of the rectangle together with your fingers.
Step 12

STEP 12

Your fortune teller should look something like this. You should be able to make it open in two different directions with your fingers. Now you're ready to tell fortunes!

TELLING FORTUNES WITH YOUR FORTUNETELLER

1 Ask a friend to pick one of the four colours on your fortuneteller. Spell out the colour, moving the fortuneteller once for each letter. When you get to the last letter, keep the fortuneteller open. You will be able to see four numbers inside.
2 Ask your friend to pick one of the four numbers showing inside the fortuneteller. Move the fortuneteller in and out for the same number of times as the number they chose. When you stop counting, keep the fortune teller open. You will be able to see four numbers inside.
3 Once more, ask your friend to pick a number. To see what the fortuneteller has predicted, open up the triangle flap where the number is and read the fortune written underneath!
