The Second Coming of Jesus Christ
Outlined by Mo
What is it?
The Second Coming is when Jesus Christ will return to earth in fulfillment of his promises and to fulfill the prophecies made about him. It is also said that the Second Coming is when Jesus Christ returns to the earth to defeat evil and establish his reign of justice and peace.
Matthew 24:30 : Jesus said "At that time the sign of the Son of Man will appear in the sky, and all the nations of the earth will mourn. They will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of the sky, with power and great glory" Revelation 19:11-12 I saw heaven standing open and there before me was a white horse, whose rider is called Faithful and True. With justice he judges and makes war. His eyes are like blazing fire, and on his head are many crowns. He has a name written on him that no one knows but he himself.
Why is it important?
Belief in the Second Coming is important because Jesus Himself promised it. The Second Coming of Christ is our hope and confidence that God is in control of all things and is faithful to His Word and His promises. The Second Coming is also important because it will come at the time when the world is most in need. The book of Revelations talks about the world being devastated, millions of people dying, and the most evil person in all history will be ruler of the entire world. The Second Coming of Christ puts all this to an end.
Revelation 19:15-16: Out of his mouth comes a sharp sword with which to strike down the nations. 'He will rule them with an iron scepter.' He treads the winepress of the fury of the wrath of God Almighty. On his robe and on his thigh he has this name written: KING OF KINGS AND LORD OF LORDS." Titus 2:12-14: It teaches us to say NO to ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright, and godly lives in the present age, while we wait for the blessed hope - the glorious appearing of our great God and Savior, who gave himself for us to redeem us from all wickedness and to purify for himself people that are his very own, eager to do what is good.
When will it be?
We do not know when this event will occur. Several books in the bible describe events that will occur either prior or as indications that the Second Coming is approaching.
Matthew 24:5-6:
For many will come in my name, saying, 7 am the Messiah.' They will lead many astray. And wars will break out near and far, but don't panic. Yes, these things must come, but the end won't follow immediately. Matthew 24:7-12:
The nations and kingdoms will proclaim war against each other, and there* will be famines and earthquakes in many parts of the world. But all this will be only the beginning of the horrors to come. Then you will be arrested, persecuted, and killed. You will be hated all over the world because of your allegiance to me. And many will turn away from me and betray and hate each other. And many false prophets will appear and will lead many people astray. Sin will be rampant everywhere, and the love of many will grow cold. But those who endure to the end will be saved.
Matthew 24:36:
No one knows about that day or hour, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father. Matthew 24:42-43:
Therefore keep watch, because you do not know on what day your Lord will come. But understand this, if the owner of the house had known at what time of night the thief was coming, he would have kept watch and would not have let his house be broken into.
2 Thessalonians 2:8-9:
Inflaming fire, bringing judgment on those who don't know God and on those who refuse to obey the Good News of our Lord Jesus. They will be punished with everlasting destruction, forever separated from the Lord and from his glorious power.
There will also be good events that are indicative or as a result of the Second Coming of Jesus Christ.
Matthew 24:13-14: But those who endure to the end will be saved. And the Good News about the Kingdom will be preached throughout the whole world, so that all nations will hear it; and then, finally, the end will come. Matthew 24:46-47: If the master returns and finds that the servant has done a good job, there will be a reward. I assure you, the master will put that servant in charge of all he owns.
What should we do before he arrives?
We should ensure that we are living under His word and His direction, living a life that is pleasing to him. We must ensure that we are good stewards of the gifts and strengths that he has given us and that we not misuse them.
Matthew 24:44:
So you also must be ready, because the Son of Man will come at an hour when you do not expect him.
Matthew 24:50-51:
The master of that servant will come on a day when he does not expect him and at an hour he is not aware of. He will cut him to pieces and assign him a place with the hypocrites, where there will be weeping and gnashing of the teeth.
Matthew 25:35-40:
For I was hungry, and you fed me. I was thirsty, and you gave me a drink. I was a stranger, and you invited me into your home. I was naked, and you gave me clothing. I was sick, and you cared for me. I was in prison, and you visited me. Then these righteous ones will reply, ^Lord, when did we ever see you hungry and feed you? Or thirsty and give you something to drink? Or a stranger and show you hospitality? Or naked and give you clothing? When did we ever see you sick or in prison, and visit you? And the King will tell them, 7 assure you, when you did it to one of the least of these my brothers and sisters, you were doing it to me.
Are you ready?
Throughout the Word of God we are also warned not to be anxious or inpatient in our quest to see the Second Coming of Jesus Christ. There are also those that believe that this event has occurred already or that it will not happen at all.
2 Peter 3:4
This will be their argument: "Jesus promised to come back, did he? Then where is he? Why, as far back as anyone can remember, everything has remained exactlv the same since the world was first created."
As Christian's and\or believers in the Word of God we must anticipate His arrival and have a good biblical understanding of this event. We are not to set dates or times but instead work to practice our faith and live our lives as if it could happen any day now bui more importantly be obedient of His Word.
Matthew 25:19-21: After a long time the master of those servants returned and settled accounts with them. The man who had received the five talents brought the other five. Master, he said, you entrusted me with five talents. See I have gained five more. His master replied, well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share your master's happiness! 2 Peter 3:13-15: But we are looking forward to the new heavens and new earth he has promised, a world where everyone is right with God. And so, dear friends while you are waiting for these things to happen, make every effort to live a pure and blameless life. And be at peace with God. And remember, the Lord is waiting so that people have time to be saved.
