Elmore County got its name after the Civil War but many of the ancestors of Charles Brooks were already there. Many came into Montgomery, the capitol city, to work on the railroad and become successful. Some of Kathy's relatives also were working on the railroad while migrating into town, renting rooms, and boarding houses all about the town that one would not recognize now. Dirt roads, horse and buggy, soon hotels on brick roads, selling their crops to be shipped out on the train or steamboats down river. Power lines and Trolley cars entered the scene and stores or sewing factories where the ladies could work. His mom sewed jeans and hers worked at Kress; catching the bus by 1940s to get home and cook supper. They lived so close together, these many relatives, and never realized until now many attended the same schools and churches. This picture of Charles was taken only months before he got sick. He was a reliable, well respected businessman, who had funded and created Brooks Electric in Elmore County as they had taken a second mortgage on the home to buy the metal building and pour the slab foundation. His brothers tried to keep it going, then nephews, losing its reputation as time goes on.
