Duo knocked on the apartment door, he was wearing baggy jeans and a white tank top (AN: *drool*). In his hand, he held red roses, he had something on his mind, two certain people, Hilde, and his daughter Helen. Hilde and Duo had been divorced for one month before Duo got with Doris, Hilde hadn't been answering Duo's phone calls, and she wasn't letting him see Helen, in fact, he had gotten quite lonely. He had been with Doris for five months, making it six months since Hilde broke it off with Duo.
Doris opened the door grinning widely, "Hey Duo!"
"Hey Babe!" He pulled her into a deep kiss, when they broke apart, Duo handed Doris the roses, she gasped, but still smiled, "Aww, Duo! You shouldn't have!"
"It was nothing." Duo smiled as he walked into the apartment.
"I'm glad to see you!" Doris said closing the door, then wrapping her arms around him in a tight embrace.
"Me too Babe." Duo responded, hugging the blond back.
He liked a lot of things about Doris, she had a nice figure, the nicest cornflower blue eyes, and short curly blond hair that surrounded her pretty face. She wore a purple halter top and black jeans, it didn't matter to Duo what she wore, she always looked pretty to him, he watched her ass as she walked into the kitchen.
"Do you want a beer or something?" Doris called from there.
"Sure." Duo answered.
The couple sat next to each other, quietly drinking their beers, the only sound that was there was the New York City traffic and the noise of people talking, sometimes an occasional car honk. The weather was hot because it was early August. They finished their beers and Duo threw the bottles into the garbage and returned to Doris. He grinned then kissed her deeply, Doris happily returned it, Duo deepened it as he picked her up and carried her to her bed.
Duo watched Doris sleep, she looked so pretty when she slept. Duo got down to thinking about Hilde and Helen, he could be missing something, Helen could've gotten into some kind of funny trouble, that he could tell Helen's boyfriend when she got older. He wanted to see her so bad, he wanted to see Hilde even more. The memories of Duo watching Hilde walk down the aisle on their wedding day, the reception, where Heero actually laughed, and Duo put cake into Trowa's face, Quatre was crying because he cries at weddings. He wished he could be with Hilde again.
He went and took a shower and emerged fully dressed. He didn't want to hurt Doris' feelings by ditching her like this. He sighed and sat on the edge of the bed near her, he gently shook her, she groaned and opened her eyes, she smiled tiredly at him.
"I can't be with you anymore Doris." Duo stated, he wasn't smiling at all.
"Why Duo?" Doris asked, her eyes were watering, but she wasn't going to cry in front of Duo.
"I'm in love with Hilde, I can't help but think about her all the time. I miss her, and I miss Helen too. I'm sorry." Duo explained.
"I understand, don't worry, you won't hear another word from me Duo Maxwell." Doris responded, "You're free to go back to Hilde."
The ex-couple shared their last kiss, and Duo went off to go back to Hilde. Doris waited until Duo was gone, she watched him leave the building from her window, she went back to her bed and began crying into her pillow.
After a while of crying, she sucked it up, she would just have to move on, there would be other guys in her life, at least she hoped.
Doris felt like she was gaining weight, but she wasn't sure why, then, a thought hit her, she could be pregnant. She didn't want to be! She wouldn't be able to take care of the baby, she could barely take care of herself. She placed her hand over her womb, she felt a warm presence there, it warmed her cold hand. She didn't want her baby to get sick either, the apartment wasn't the warmest place in the world. Then, maybe she wasn't, that would be a relief for her. She grabbed her jacket and headed for the hospital.
"Well, yes you are Miss Marina." The doctor said, putting on his best smile to cheer up Doris.
"Thank you doctor." Doris gulped, she grabbed her jacket and went home.
"I finally get to see you." Doris smiled at the quiet baby girl. The baby wasn't crying like the rest of them, she was looking all around her, amazed at the world around her. "But I can't keep you."
The baby girl was laying in a baby tub, you know the one where they put babies in while they're in the hospital, Doris was sitting in a chair next to here.
"But you still need a name girl." Doris thought for a minute, then she scribbled a name down on a paper, left in next to the baby girl, she also left a locket with her hair in it, just in case the baby decided to track her down, she would know.
A doctor found the note, it read: Hi, my name is Carol.
"Give me back my dolly Drake!" Five year old Carol shouted, once again jumping up for her doll.
Drake smirked and kept the doll in the air. He had black hair with a tint of red that he kept in a surfer cut, he dressed in ultra baggy clothes, he had deep brown eyes. He was fifteen and 6'3, not good for Carol who was only 3'6.
Carol on the other hand, wore whatever Drake had when he was little. Carol had blond curly hair that reached her shoulders, it hung loosely with nothing holding it back. Her blue eyes narrowed at the older boy, and she took another leap at the doll, but couldn't reach it.
"Drake, stop teasing your sister." Sarah O'Brian told her son, she was Chinese, that's where Drake got his looks from.
"Please Drake." Gerald O'Brian asked, not looking up from the newspaper. He was Irish, he had red hair and bright green eyes.
"Fine! Here's your stupid doll!" Drake growled, throwing the doll down, then he wandered off to his room, just before he shut the door, "Why did we adopt her anyway?! Her mom didn't want her, so why should we take care of her?!" Then the door slammed shut.
"Uh oh." Sarah sighed.
Carol sniffled, and began crying, Sarah went over, picked up Carol, went over to the couch, and sat down with Carol held tightly in her arms, Carol just continued crying.
"Carol calm down." Sarah cooed to her adopted daughter, "Remember our talk about this last time?"
Carol wiped her tears and a smile came across her face, "Yeah!"
"What was it?"
"That there's a tummy mommy, and a heart mommy!" Carol grinned.
"That's right, and what else?"
"That my tummy mommy couldn't take care of me, so you took me in!" Carol's smile seemed to grow each minute.
"Good job! I bet you're tummy mommy is thinking about you right now!" Sarah smiled.
"Really?"
"Really, really."
"Yay!" Carol cheered.
"Can I have your belly button?" Sarah asked in a teasing voice.
"No!" Carol grinned defiantly.
"I'm gonna take it anyway!" Sarah began tickling the small girl, sending both of them into fits of laughter.
Carol was wandering around the house, she had heard the doorbell ring, but, she didn't want to see who it was just yet. She drifted to the hallway by the front door, her mom was arguing with someone, it was a soldier.
"You can't take her!" Sarah snapped at them, Carol knew Sarah was going to cry.
"I have a direct order ma'am." The man explained.
"She's just a child! She doesn't even know who he is!" Sarah argued.
'Is she talking about my real dad?' Carol asked herself.
"How do I know for sure?" The soldier snarled.
Sarah, knew it was hopeless to argue, so she slammed the door shut, she noticed that Drake and Carol were in the hallway, she smiled weakly at them, "Drake! Take Carol, and get out of here! It isn't safe!"
"Mom, what about you?!" Drake looked like he was ready to cry.
"GO!"
Drake picked up the small girl and ran out the back door. He just kept running and running, getting as far away from the house as possible. Carol clung to Drake like he was the only person she knew. As soon as they were deep in the woods, Drake set Carol down and he sat against a tree, short of breath. Carol sat next to him.
"Why did mommy want us to go?" Carol asked the older boy.
"Because, she cares about us both, and she didn't want us to get hurt, that's why." Drake explained to the blond girl.
"Why did you save me? I thought you hated me." Carol continued looking up at him.
"Oh Carol, " Drake sighed pulling the girl into a tight embrace, "I never hated you, you're family, I can never hate you."
Carol fell asleep against him, but, these happy times were not going to last.
The older boy was teaching Carol how to start a fire when a stray bullet whizzed past Drake's ear. His eyes widened, and he put Carol in the small cave he had found.
"Stay there, and don't come out no matter what!" Drake barked, then went to find the source.
The blond girl stayed in the shadows. A gun shot echoed through the trees, Carol knew what had happened to Drake, whoever was looking for her, must have gotten him.
She stayed in the cave for a while, she just sat there deep in thought, why was everyone she knew dying? She felt tears sting at her eyes once again, she pulled her knees up to her chest and just began sobbing into them, not caring if anyone heard her.
"Over here! I think I found her!" A voice outside shouted.
"Well then, bring her out here!" Another snarled.
"Leave her alone!" A voice shouted, it was weakened, it was Drake! But he was hurt!
"Come out Carol, or your friend here dies!" A voice threatened.
Carol bit at her lip, when she was about to crawl out, Drake's voice rang out again, "Stay in there! They're just going to hurt you Carol!"
"I won't let them hurt you Drake!" Carol cried, and she crawled out, temporarily blinded, she saw four soldiers and a doctor kind of guy, two soldiers were holding Drake still, another had a gun pointed at his head. Carol noted that Drake's leg was bleeding from a gunshot wound. Carol glared at everyone, "Let him go!"
The soldier released Drake who in turn started to run to get help, but, one of the soldiers cocked his gun and shot Drake, who in turn fell lifelessly to the ground.
"NO!" Carol shrieked, and started to go to Drake, but she was held back by the doctor.
"Who are you?!" Carol screeched and cried at the same time, tears were flooding from her eyes.
"I am Doctor Z." He explained, "I was sent to come and train you."
"You killed them!" Carol argued, the nasty scowl never leaving her face.
"It was necessary to get you to join us." He told her.
"Necessary my ass! You still killed them!" Carol sobbed.
"There, there, my child, do you want to know who your real parents are?" Doctor Z asked her.
Carol wiped away her tears and quickly nodded.
"Just do a few things for me and I'll take you to your parents, I promise." The doc said, offering his hand out her Carol.
The blond backed away, "No! You'll just kill them too!"
"Fine, you go live on the streets of New York! You can find your parents by yourself!" The doctor said, signaling for the soldiers to follow, which they did. As they walked away, she heard the doctor say, "Don't worry about killing her now, she won't last long on the streets of New York
Winter slowly approached, the temperature dropped rapidly, Carol ducked into an allyway to escape the cold. The draft just seemed to get worse from the wind blowing through there constantly. She took refuge in an old abandoned church, it was small, but, there were a whole bunch of other homeless kids there. The kids just seemed to stare at her, for some reason, these kids were clean and neat, not compared to her, her hair was greasy and straight now, she was covered and dirt, mud, and smelled terrible.
One of the kids got up and ran to the alter and into one of the side rooms, Carol heard some talking, and a man stepped out with the little boy in his arms.
"Who are you?" The man asked, he was around six foot three with brillant green eyes that were practically hidden by his shaggy blond hair. He wore a blue shirt and black baggy jeans.
"I'm Carol O'Brian." Carol answered, finding her feet to be interesting at the moment.
"You have a last name, so why aren't you home with your parents?" He questioned.
"They were killed, they weren't my real parents, they adopted me. The people who killed them knew my real parents, they wanted to take me with them." Carol explained fiddling with shirt.
"Don't worry kid, I'll help you, that's what I do here." The man told Carol softly, "By the way, I'm Joey."
Carol smiled gratefully up at the older man, she was finally able to live somewhere.
Carol had spent three months there, she had made some friends, who were eventually adopted, now only Carol needed to find a real home, but no one showed any real interest in the blond girl. She took a seat in a pew and just began to cry, all the hopes had once again disappeared.
Joey took a seat next to her, "Hey, it's okay, I'm sure someone'll take you home."
"No they won't!" Carol sobbed, shaking her head, "It's the same fucking thing every time!"
"Language!" Joey warned, "We are in God's house, he doesn't like that foul mouth of yours. Even if no one takes you home, I'll still be here for you."
"Thanks." Carol murmured wrapping her arms around him, she had calmed down a great deal. Suddenly the door burst open, there was a man and a woman, the both looked happy.
"Do you have anymore children up for adoption?" The woman quickly asked, she looked desperate.
"Please tell us you do!" The man begged.
"Why yes we do." Joey smiled, putting Carol onto her feet, "She's Carol, she hasn't found anyone yet, and is very upset."
"She's adorable!" The woman squealed, she got down on one knee and looked Carol directly into the eyes.
"We want to adopt her." The man quickly said.
"Don't you want to know a bit of her backround?" Joey questioned.
"No, I don't care where she came from, all I care about is that she has a safe house to live in and she's loved." The woman was about five foot five, she had brown hair, it was streaked with a lighter brown, it was down to her shoulders, it was very greasy at the top. She had olive colored skin and she had dark bags under her brown eyes, they seemed to be dragging down her bottom eyelid. She also had very chubby cheeks. She wore a pink shirt that was low cut exposing her boob crack on her large chest. She wore blue jeans.
Her husband was about five foot nine, he had sandy blond hair that was a bit shaggy, but not like Joey's. He wore a sweat shirt and pants, they were gray. He had a small pair of glasses surrounding his hazel eyes. He was much neater than his wife.
"May I know your names?" Joey asked softly.
"We're Myroslava and Nick Hnat." Nick responded, taking the small girl into his arms, Carol tilted her head to the side as she examined her new parents.
"Well, she's all yours." Joey told the couple.
Carol held out her hands to Joey, wishing she didn't have to leave him. Joey clasped her hand tightly, "You've got your family Carol, you have a home. Go."
The blond girl nodded, she wrapped her arms around Nick's neck, the new father held Carol close, not wanting to ever let go of her. Carol began sobbing into the crook of Nick's neck.
Joey sighed, "You better go before she starts fighting."
The couple nodded and left as quickly as they had come.
He watched them leave, then Joey pulled out a shot gun, he had been waiting to use this, he had to end his life, he had nothing to live for now that Carol was gone. He pressed the gun against his temple, and pulled the trigger. His body fell limp to the ground, there he lied in a pool of blood. Carol never heard that shot.
She spent the next year there, it was the most miserable time she ever had! Carol backed into a corner in her small room, it contained a cot, blanket, and a small closet, which held what little clothes she had. She curled up into a ball and quietly sat there. Her head throbbed from the new bruise forming there, she rocked a little to prevent herself from crying, her new parents were so nice the first few months, now they were just mean! They hadn't let her take a shower, and her hair had grown down to the middle of her back, it was all greasy, she smelled from the lack of bathing.
"Girl! Where are you?!" Carol heard Myroslava shout to her, causing Carol to shiver and curl up in a tighter ball, she prayed no one would find her.
Suddenly, the door burst open, there was the fat witch, "Girl! Clean the toilet now!"
"I cleaned it this morning." Carol responded softly, not leaving her corner, she didn't want to face the world. A soft summer breeze blew through the open window, she longed to go outside.
"I don't care! You will not sit around all day and do nothing!" Myroslava screeched, delivering a hard kick to Carol's side.
The blond girl whimpered and obidiantly stood up and headed to the bathroom, as she did, another kick was sent at her, it hit her butt, knocking her over, she fell to the ground and shivered.
"Up!" The woman screamed.
Carol slowly got to her feet, her knees were shaking, she was truly afraid of this woman. She suspected the only reason they wanted another child was to be their slave. Apparently the last one ran away, which is what Carol was planning to do that night.
The dark night gave Carol the cover she needed, she quietly climbed out her small window, and dropped the eight feet to the ground, pain ran through the small girl's body. She clambered to her feet, she turned and faced the street, now she would be free, it was the open road. She ran her hand through her now short hair, Myroslava had cut it chin length as a punishment, Carol liked how it was, it would be easier to take care of.
She began running, this would be a whole new world to explore, everything was up to her now!
Carol eagerly ran through the streets of downtown New York City the next day, it had taken her the rest of the night to get there, but it was worth it! She was free! Her celebration came to an end when she ran smack into a woman who was looking into a window of a shop. Carol fell back to the ground and looked up at the woman. She had blond curly hair and cornflower blue eyes, she wore blue jeans, the knees had worn out to strings, she wore a black shirt, around her neck was a locket, the woman looked down at Carol and smiled.
"Hello Carol." The woman smiled
"H-h-h-how do you know my name?" Carol stuttered, she was shocked to her bone marrow.
"Let's say I know your mother." The woman explained softly.
"Can you take me to her?" Carol asked excitedly.
The woman shook her head, "Can't, but, she did tell me to give you this in case I found you." She unclasped the necklace and put it on Carol.
The blond girl looked down and examined it, when she looked up, the woman was gone. Carol stood there rooted in her place, people passed her by, what if that was her mother. She shrugged off the thought and tucked her locket under her shirt to prevent anyone from seeing it and taking it. It was from her mother, she had to guard it with her life!
Carol was wandering around when she came across a military scrape yard, she wandered in, maybe she could build some kind of shelter for her to stay in. As she looked around, she found a mobile suit! It was a bit rusty, but, it was still good! She climbed up to the cockpit, she eagerly opened it up, and hopped into the pilots seat. Her heart beat sped up as the hatch closed, and the machine turned on. She pressed a few buttons and it started moving, she ignored the shreiks of people below, she was having the time of her life.
She was pressing buttons, then, something shot out of the suit, and blew up the city block, screams were heard from the wound and dying. Carol quickly got out of the suit and began to get pushed along with the crowd of people who were trying to get out of there as fast as they could. Someone stepped on her foot, causing Carol to give off a high pitched yelp.
The girl took cover in the nearst allyway to escape the chaos of all the people. There she saw a man lying there, he had red hair that was shaggy, he wore a baggy grey shirt that said 'EAT MY HEAD' on it. He wore extremely baggy black jeans. He wore a bandanna on his head He didn't appear to be breathing at all.
"Mr.?" Carol asked nervously, kneeling next to the man, he smelled dirty, and he looked it too.
The man opened his eyes, they were deep blue, and nearly covered by his bangs. He placed a foot on his guitar case, and he rubbed the sleep from his eyes, and he looked over at a very shocked Carol. "Hello, who are you?"
"I'm Carol." She responded, not wanting to even mutter the last name 'Hnat.'
He smiled, "I'm Dominic, nice to meet you!"
She smiled back.
Her birthday was fast approaching. Winter had gone by, Dominic and Carol had survived it, they mosly spent their time in abandoned buildings, but, they kept warm. With the turning of the seasons, what little snow had fallen that year, it began to melt. Time had no limits anymore, it was as if there was no time, they had no where to be, and no one to go to, except for each other. They had grown extremely close to each other, the bond between them was probably unbreakable.
On Carol's birthday, Dominic handed Carol a small package, it was wrapped in old newspaper and sting. "Happy Birthday Carol!"
The blond girl squealed with joy. "Daddy! You didn't have to!"
Dominic smiled, "But I wanted to."
Carol eagerly tore open the small present, in it lay a knife, it was in a sheath, which could be placed around her lower leg. Carol threw her arms around Dominic, "THANK YOU SO MUCH!!"
He huged the girl back, "It's no problem."
She placed it on her lower leg, it made her feel safe now. A thought hit her, what was in the locket the friend of her mom gave her? She carefully pulled out the locket, and slowly opened it up, in there layed some hairs, Dominic smiled.
"You can get those tested and find you mom."
"Yeah! Then I can find my dad!" A wide grin smile crossed her face, she couldn't wait! She carefully closed it, making sure one hair didn't fall out at all!
Dominic slid his bandanna off his head and handed it to Carol, "You can have this too."
The girl looked up at him, "But this is your favorite bandanna!"
"I want you to have it."
Carol and Dominic were practicing fighting when it happened. A gun shot rang out, Dominic fell over, blood was oozing out of the back of his head, Carol covered her mouth in utter shock! Someone had shot the one person that meant the most to her! She was seven years old! She needed someone to look after her! Carol began sobbing. She clutched his bandanna that was in her hair.
The blond girl walked into the doctors office the next day, she stared out the window, there were a bunch of military helicopters landing around the city, she began to wonder what was going on.
After finally seeing her mother fifteen year old Carol began wandering the streets of New York City again, her dad was going to be a bit tougher to get to, but, she was going to do it! She had to!
She closed her eyes deep in thought, but was snapped out of it when an officer showed up!
"Shouldn't you be in school?"
"Well........you see, I just moved here and......"
"No buts, let's get you to school."
Carol was left at a high school, she wandered into the building, 'Something isn't right.'
As she walked through the halls, she turned a corner, and someone ran straight into her. Carol fell backwards, complaining loudly, she looked up and saw a blue haired girl with a braid. She looked a little mad, but, she looked behind her, then dragged the girl into the nearst classroom and slammed the door, she began piling chairs and desks up against the door. You know the rest of the story from here.
