The dark Lord licked his lips in anticipation. He could remember the old witch's words exactly.
At first he had been afraid, but then she explained that everything would go exactly as it had
been told a thousand years ago. He only regretted that he would not be around to see it.
"You are dying." She had said "But with your death will come the Dark Age. Your successor must be sired at midnight of the next full moon. If this happens the darkness will rule over the land. Night will reign and the daylight will disappear forever. The dark dragon will rise up and swallow the sun and he and his minions will spread darkness across the land. That is all I can see..."
The dark dragon would finally come and take over the day. He had only one small part to play. He needed to find his successor, his heir, and sire him at midnight.
He watched the small restaurant quietly from the rooftops, waiting for the chosen one to come out. That would be when he would make his move.
Duo grabbed Hilde's arm as they left the small restaurant. Hilde yawned and smiled at him.
"Thanks for a wonderful time, Duo." She grinned and kissed him.
"You tired?" He asked.
Hilde nodded, "A little. I haven't been getting much sleep lately."
"We have one more stop, baby." He kissed her again and started to drag her towards the piers.
"Duo! Where are we going?" Hilde laughed as she followed him.
"Don't you want to see the surprise I have for you?"
"Surprise?" She asked suspiciously. "What kind of surprise?"
"You'll see..." They slowed as they reached the pier. They stood for a moment and Duo wrapped an arm around her waist. They stared out over the water for an eternity.
"So what kind of surprise do you have for me, hmm?" She whispered.
Duo smiled and turned to face her. He started the get down on one knee when he saw something behind her. "What the..."
"What is it, Duo?" Hilde turned around and gasped. They saw six dark figures approaching steadily.
"Vampires!" Hilde gasped. Duo immediately pushed her behind him to protect her.
The first vampire stepped up out of the group and approached them. He smiled deviously and said, "I've been waiting a long time to meet you." He smirked, exposing his sharp fangs.
"What do you want?" Duo growled.
"You," He answered simply. He pushed a few strands of platinum blonde hair out of his face and motioned to his friends behind him. They started to surround the young couple and waited for further instructions.
"Who are you?" Duo demanded. "What do you want with us?"
The vampire chuckled. "I only want you, the girl is of no use to me." He stepped towards Hilde and stroked her face. She gasped and shied away.
"Leave her alone!" Duo screamed. He pulled Hilde away from the vampire and clutched her tightly.
"You're going to fulfill the prophecy." The vampire's ice-blue eyes flashed with a thirst for blood. Suddenly, he leapt at Duo and pinned him to the ground, turned his head and leaned forward to bite his neck.
"NO!" Hilde shrieked. She tried to get to her boyfriend but the other vampires grabbed her as well.
"Leave her for now, I want him to see her die." The lead vampire said.
"NO! HILDE!" Duo struggled to get free without luck.
The lead vampire leaned over again and sank his fangs into Duo's neck. Duo held in a scream as he felt his life being drained out of him. "Hilde," He mumbled as he started to pass out.
"Not yet," The head vampire growled. He slashed his neck and pressed it to Duo's mouth. Duo hesitantly drank the blood. He felt it cursing through his body. He was unable to contain his screams as his fangs grew and his eyes flashed. The veins in his eyes popped, making the whites of them turn blood red. The lead vampire turned his head and made him watch as four of the other five vampires attacked Hilde and fought to get at her blood. The one who was not in on it was standing slightly to the side. It was a female vampire with ankle-length blonde hair and forked gray eyebrows. She smiled as she watched the others feeding upon the girl.
Duo watched in horror as his girlfriend's lifeless body fell to the ground beside him.
"H-Hilde? NOOOO!" He started to cry as he pushed the vampire away from him and hovered over her. Then he started to sob.
The lead vampire was about to say something but was cut off by voices behind them.
"They're coming, my Lord!" One of the other vampires screamed to him.
"We'd better go, Zechs," Said the young woman.
"You go, Dorothy. And take the others. I'll deal with the slayers." Dorothy nodded and grabbed Duo and started to fly off, leaving Zechs and Hilde's body behind.
"Trieze," Zechs smirked as the Slayers approached him. "It's been a while, my friend."
"This time I will kill you." Trieze warned.
"I'm ready to fulfill my destiny." Zechs said, spreading his arms wide.
"I'm glad you've decided to cooperate, Zechs Marquise." Trieze leapt at the Dark Lord and staked him in the heart. Zechs's body fell to the ground next to Hilde with a smile still playing on his lips. Then he dissolved into ash.
Liana walked slowly through the drizzle towards her home, hoping to extend the time that it took to get there. She sighed and kicked and old pop can down the street. She could see her huge mansion still ahead of her, but she didn't want to return. She looked around for somewhere that would give her shelter from the rain, but far enough away from her home that her parents would not see her.
She didn't want to put up with them. They had been fighting a lot lately, and Liana knew they were talking about a divorce. Ever since she had overheard them talking they had been sickeningly nice to her. They were always showering her with gifts and words of encouragement and then they would break down into tears because of what they thought they were doing to her. Her father came home almost every day with a bouquet of flowers for her. And so now her room smelled strongly of roses and carnations. Although things may have been better for her, her parents were miserable, and because of that there was no way she could enjoy her new presents.
She walked across the field to the old willow tree and climbed up its trunk. The rain was coming down harder now and when she finally got to the small hollow near the top she was almost completely soaked.
She silently wrung out her dark green hair. The rain had gotten it so wet that instead of looking almost black it looked completely black. Her black eyes darted towards her house in the distance. The rain was bouncing of it creating a kind of eerie mist enveloping it. She could make out a faint figure coming out of the house. It was probably her mother or the live-in maid, looking for her. Well, she couldn't hear them, as far as she was concerned, she couldn't even see them.
"I wish I could get away from this place," She said dreamily. She often wished to leave her sheltered life in search of an adventure. She wanted nothing more than to have some fun once in a while.
She watched as the sky opened up and Mother Nature unleashed her fury on the earth. The rains whipped around her, and Liana figured that she had best get home before her parents called the cops. She was just stepping out of the hollow when she saw lightening strike.
Everything happened in slow motion, and a bolt of lightening flashed and hit the tree she was sitting in. She felt herself being flung from the tree and the searing pain through her entire body. The ground rushed up to meet and she passed out just before she hit the ground.
