People at times get Lincoln fever. With movies and the prevailing thought that he was a warrior against slavery distorting the truth. Abraham Lincoln did free the slaves; but not because he felt Blacks should be free. He freed slaves as a strategic move to weaken the South. Proof of this is in the fact that the slaves in Southern areas that remained loyal to the Union remained slaves even after emancipation. Lincoln said that he would keep slavery if it would preserve the Union; and that he would end slavery if it would preserve the Union. Abraham Lincoln was a champion of holding the United States together, not of racial equality.
On the issue of slavery, and on his personal feelings about African-Americans and their equality with Whites, Abraham Lincoln had this to say:
In a letter to Horace Greeley, dated August 24, 1862, Lincoln stated:
"My paramount object is to save the union...not to save or destroy slavery."
Yes Abraham Lincoln emancipated the slaves, but not because he loved African-Americans or thought that Black people were equal. Know your history! Lincoln idolization based on a flawed understanding of history reminds me of Bill Clinton's presidency.
An African-American woman at a college, with a fanatical glare in her eyes, said to me that Bill Clinton was another John Kennedy. I laughed because of the flawed view of both Kennedy and Clinton. Kennedy stalled on civil rights legislation; and had Dr. Martin Luther King's phones bugged over a fear of communist infestation of the civil rights movement. It also wasn't Kennedy who pushed the most important civil rights legislation in history through Congress, it was President Lyndon Johnson. As for Clinton, he may maintain an office in Harlem, New York, and play a sax, but he was against affirmative action. Additionally there's still the little thing of investments in South Africa during the Apartheid Era. Sorry to burst bubbles but Bill Clinton WAS NOT the first Black President -- that honor goes to Barack Obama.

Menelik II was born August 17, 1844. He ruled Shewa (Shoa) Abyssinia (Ethiopia), a province of the country, for twenty-five years; before rising to become Ethiopian Emperor in 1889. Menelik II's reign coincided with the European Scramble for Africa, where European countries invaded the continent of Africa, and carved it up to satisfy imperialistic desires. Ethiopia stood as one of two independent nations left on the continent -- the other being Liberia.
After a treaty dispute with Ethiopia, the Kingdom of Italy decided on a military solution. Behind this decision was the desire of Italy to share in the spoils ofr European colonialism and imperialism in Africa. The following conflict became known as the First Italo-Ethiopian War.
The two sides clashed numerous times, leading up to the decisive battle of the war. On March 1, 1896, the Italian and Ethiopian armies met at Adwa (Adowa), Ethiopia. The Italian forces consisted on 17,700 well armed men, with 56 artillery pieces. Facing them was an Ethiopian force of 120,000 men with 100,000 firearms, and about 40 artillery pieces -- some being obsolete.
The two armies fought, with Emperor Menelik II's soldiers securing an overwhelming victory! Ethiopian casualties included 4,000-5,000 men killed and 8,000 wounded. The Italian army was virtually wiped out, suffering 7,000 dead, 1,500 wounded and 3,000 captured. Captured African soldiers, who fought for the Italians, had body parts amputated to mark them as African traitors. Consequently, a number of them did not survive their captivity. As a result of their defeat at the hands of Ethiopia, the Kingdom of Italy signed the Treaty of Addis Ababa which recognized Ethiopian independence.
Menelik II was more than a great wartime leader. He eagerly embraced modernization for his country; and, his innovations were unprecedented in Ethiopian history. They include his creation of the Ethiopian capitol, Addis Ababa; the introduction of electricity; construction of modern bridges and telegraph lines; creation of a mint, national currency and a national bank; the first hotel; schools and hospitals; a postal system; and a national newspaper.
Menelik II's reign ended upon his death on December 12, 1913. He was the father of Ethiopia; and, he would be known for all times, as the person who led the most successful campaign of African resistance to European colonialism and domination. Menelik II (1844-1913).

The Black Panther Party was established in 1966 in Oakland, California. The organization was founded by Bobby Seale and Huey P. Newton to establish a viable social and political force in the Black community, to fight back against racial injustice and inequities in the system. The name was originally The Black Panther Party For Self-Defense, but was later shortened.
The Party grew rapidly, drawing membership out of the long-standing discontent of African-Americans surviving in a racist culture. Where other political organizations had been satisfied to talk about problems, the Black Panther Party set out to address and rectify them. To educate its members the Black Panther Party (BPP) instituted political education classes and mandatory reading. To address the lack of health care in Black communities, the BPP started clinics. Realizing that many African-American children went to school hungry, the Party initiated free breakfast programs.
On the issue of racially motivated police brutality, the BPP took direct action. After researching the law, Huey P. Newton led the members in ARMED PATROLS of police activities. Police stops in the African-American community were thereafter observed.
The government was fearful of the rise of Black leadership. This fear was magnified in the case of the Black Panthers, who were spreading across the country, creating a cadre of politically educated and motivated -- armed -- Black leaders. The FBI put its Counter Intelligence Program (COINTELPRO) into effect to destroy the party.
The FBI and other law enforcement agencies began spying on the Black Panther Party. A program of misinformation was also conducted to create mistrust, and/or to result in the death of Panther Party members. Misinformation was given to other political groups, and even to street gangs, to create animosity and violence toward The Panthers. The same was done with members of the party itself, giving false information about other party members to instill mistrust. When these tactics weren't sufficient, the government resorted to outright assassination -- as in the case of Fred Hampton in Chicago on December 4, 1969.
Government pressure had its effect. The Party began to disintegrate in the 1970's. Members went to jail, were murdered, or hounded into exile or into leaving the party. The Party's co-founder, Huey P. Newton, was murdered on August 22, 1989, by a gang member.

57 year-old Floyd Dent was pulled over by Inkster, Michigan police and violently assaulted. The traffic stop, caught on video, shows the African-American Dent being stopped by police, then approached by an armed officer. Dent is then taken out of his car, and immediately placed on the ground in a chokehold.
Once in the chokehold and on the ground, an officer proceeds to hit Mr. Dent 16 times in the head. Dent was also kicked and tasered 3 times. He was bloodied by the incident.
A judge saw the video and dismissed multiple charges. The judge said that there was no evidence of Dent fleeing the police, or resisting arrest.
Dent is still facing a cocaine charge stemming from the traffic stop. Police claim to have found the drugs in his car, while Dent says they were planted. It's interesting to note that one of the officers involved in the incident has been charged previously with falsifying reports and planting evidence. Click link below to watch video:

A pow wow (or pau wau) is a gathering of Native American peoples. I've been to a couple of the Chicago Pow Wows, and they were marvelous! Tasty Native food, wonderful smells in the air, the rhymic beat of Indian drums and music floating to the heavens, and the most beautiful costumes! There were also places to buy authentic Native American goods and clothing.
If you want to take in some culture & history, while enjoying wonderful sites and sounds -- and enjoying delicious food -- make plans to visit the 62nd Annual Chicago Pow Wow now! Oh, and be sure to try the FRY BREAD and INDIAN TACOS!

Getting away with murder wasn't enough for George Zimmerman. Now he's throwing gas on the fire with his comments in a recent interview. Zimmerman says that killing Trayvon Martin was god's plan! In the 13 minute long interview he also takes shots at President Obama. Zimmerman blames the President for stoking racial tensions against him during his trial.
A few things need to be cleared up. First, a spiritual hand didn't swoop down to pull the trigger on Trayvon Martin -- George Zimmerman pulled the trigger! With racism in his mind and heart he saw an African-American in his neighborhood, and he did what he did to change that fact. He murdered Trayvon Martin!
Secondly, President Obama didn't fan any racial flames. The minute that facts about the case hit the public, there were already racial tensions. Black people have had to endure racial murders for hundreds of years. We know what they look like, and we don't need government officials to tell us how to feel or react to them.
