The investigation into last week's terrorist attacks on London widened yesterday when Egyptian authorities confirmed the arrest of a chemist wanted in connection with the discovery of a bomb factory in Leeds.
British intelligence officials are working with their Egyptian counterparts in an investigation which became public yesterday when the interior ministry in Cairo confirmed that Magdy Mahmoud Mostapha al-Nashar, a 33-year-old Egyptian who trained as a biochemist in the UK and US, was being interrogated.
The news came as it emerged that British officials have briefed their overseas allies that the explosives used in the attacks and material found in Leeds were triacetone triperoxide, a weapon favoured by suicide bombers in the Middle East. The ingredients for the explosive - also known as TATP or Mother of Satan - are widely available in pharmacies and hardware stores.
Anti-terrorist officers and bomb disposal experts have been searching a flat linked to Mr Nashar in Leeds, home to three of the four men suspected of carrying out suicide bomb attacks which killed at least 54 people in rush hour on Underground trains and a bus.
The developments in the investigation came as Charles Clarke, home secretary, outlined sweeping new counter-terror laws to be introduced in a bill this autumn. The government will make the indirect incitement of terrorism and providing or receiving terrorist training a criminal offence. "Acts preparatory to terrorism" will also be outlawed.
People going to overseas training camps or trying to find out how to build a bomb on the internet could be prosecuted under the legislation too. Opposition parties raised questions about the workability of the legislation and said they would reserve judgment until more details emerged.
Sir Ian Blair, metropolitan police commissioner, yesterday warned of a "very strong possibility" of further attacks. He said he expected a "clear al-Qaeda link" to emerge as the focus of the investigation shifted towards identifying those behind the bombers. "What we have got to find is who encouraged them, who trained them, who is the chemist?" he said.
Security sources said Mr Nashar knew some of the suicide bombers. But the police have not named him as a suspect. Mr Nashar has denied any connection to the bombings, according to the Egyptian interior ministry.
UK police said last night that MI5 was liaising closely with Egyptian intelligence and that British anti-terrorist officers were on their way to Cairo.
The investigation also spread to Pakistan, where at least one of the bombers was known to have travelled recently.

The Illinois Highway Authority
is now being reported on the mainstream "Press" our Chicago, Illinois media, on channel 7 TV, last night they spoke about the things I had reported here which did not came to light in a news until I started investigation of Illinois Tollway for Fraud and Theft whereby those in Illinois are over charged and fined via a fraudulant system without any way to dispute a fine you are Guilty! NO Jutice, a karagaroo Court without Judges, only a privated state paid lawyer handling all these cases, set up to collect your money! I was the first to go after these people within my broadcast so it seems that someone out there is Listening Stay tune!
Hospital Medical Mistakes, and the Use of Over Medicating and padding billings with unneeded X-Rays and MRI's and placing Patience at-risk. And What does the State of Illinois do to investigate these complains! NOTHING! In my case I have been targeted by those in cars who are hitting my vehicle and the police don't write up reports, on one day my car was hit twice while I was in the hospital! the next week a Man out of Glen Ellyn Illinois who was driving in Lombard Illinois hit my car and the police refused to take a report even after two cars showed up on the scened, they reported the reason they did nothing was because the accident happened in a unincorporated area, no sheriff was called nothing! The man who hit my car told my daughter and others at the scene he would pay for the accident but because of the lack of reporting my the officer his wife refuse to give any information on the insurance? Why? They were at fault and please note that as in all other cases I have filed they will do nothing because it happened in DuPage County and area which has allowed Terrrorist to attack me, counterfeit money fraud to go into my bank without investigation, One sided testimony in any and all hearings expartee rules by their Judges, in fact I was in there court complaining about a business theft and had to fight to get a subpena of records, one which would have proven a banking fraud connected to terrorism prior to 9/11/01 but again why is the Government allowing this to happen all over the country! There and whistle blowers who are all in the same state without rights all being born and raised in the US, So if you are a criminal, theft, and murderer who is hired to harrash those who speak out you are indeed protected but if you are a citzen you are a target, a target to government based corruption and those involved using clout to target you and make you go bye bye.
In the last car accident the man who hit my car, pushed the car as if he wanted to killed those in the vehicle it was raining and he was moving very fast for conditions, what if he was sent... They police did nothing they did not even call the sheriff to sent a car out, you see if you have no money, no home, and no transportation you are parked, they can watch you and target you until they seek to harm you and maybe kill you. This is our goverment in the Millenium!

(AP) Federal authorities say they have amassed evidence for the first time that an illegal drug operation in the United States was funneling proceeds to Middle East terrorist groups like Hezbollah.
Evidence gathered by the Drug Enforcement Administration since a series of raids in January indicates that a methamphetamine drug operation in the Midwest involving men of Middle Eastern descent has been shipping money back to terrorist groups, officials said.
"There is increasing intelligence information from the investigation that for the first time alleged drug sales in the United States are going in part to support terrorist organizations in the Middle East," DEA administrator Asa Hutchinson said.
DEA officials said the men, most of whom were indicted on drug charges after their January arrests, were smuggling large quantities of the chemical pseudoephedrine from Canada into the Midwest.
Officials said the smuggling went through two primary Midwest locations, Chicago and Detroit, and involved several men with ties to Jordan, Yemen, Lebanon and other Middle East countries. There is no evidence that any of the money was connected to the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, officials said.
Pseudoephedrine is used in some popular cold and allergy medications. It is an essential ingredient in the creation of methamphetamine, a powerful and increasingly popular drug known on the streets as "ice," "poor man's cocaine" or "crystal meth."
