AGAINST 'BARKING MAD' DOG LEGISLATION On Wednesday 6th February 2002 representatives of the UK Kennel Club were at the European Parliament in Strasbourg, along with representatives of Domino Dogs Deutschland to make a presentation to MEPs about the consequences of dangerous dog legislation. Theresa Villiers - Conservative Member of the European Parliament for London – who organised the meeting with the European Parliament’s animal welfare and conservation Intergroup hailed the meeting as a great success. Speaking from the European Parliament in Strasbourg Theresa Villiers said, ""The meeting was a very successful exchange of views with MEPs from all parts of Europe and from all political standpoints. MEPs expressed their serious concerns about dog legislation in Europe, particularly in the UK and Germany. I think MEPs were shocked by the harrowing reports of what is happening in Germany and deeply concerned to hear of the growing problems with dogs abandoned by owners to scared to keep them." Theresa Villiers continued, "I will continue to campaign hard for the repeal of breed specific legislation and an end to anti-dog laws which are a threat to so many well loved family pets, particularly Staffordshire Bull terriers and Bull terriers." Notes to Editors: Theresa Villiers MEP spoke about canine breed specific legislation within Europe. Mrs Caroline Kisko – Secretary of the UK Kennel Club - spoke about the UK Dangerous Dogs Act 1991 & Mr Harold Wiegland – Chairman of Domino Dogs Deutschland – spoke about German anti-dog legislation.
