PERRY LINDSEY (March 13, 1896-Dec. 3, 1973) SUBJECT TO FLASHES OF GLORY BY DIANE WILKINSON DECEMBER 11, 1973

There are people who do not do 'very well' in a world that cannot be taken at its word. They are those who never understand that most civilized men and women always mean less or more than they say. They do not make assumptions about what we really mean but rather take us at our word.

There is evidence that Perry Lindsey - a local folk figure who died last week - was such a man. And therefore Lindsey was subject to the flashes of glory and to the prolonged feeling of loneliness that such a misunderstanding of civilized behavior must necessarily bring.

One moment of glory came for Perry Lindsey when as a result of his taking people who talk about democracy 'at their word.' Last summer, when Mr. Lindsey was 79 years old he apparently decided that something was a miss between him and the Veterans Administration. So he wrote to officials in Washington in an effort to recover some money he thought was due him.Lindsey - who carried on a regular exchange of correspondence with U. S. Representative James H. Quillen - decided that because his letters to VA had not brought him the results he wanted, the thing to do was to go Washington,D. C. and see his Congressman. He borrowed the money and took off on a long bus trip to a very big and busy city. A few days later he was back in Sevierville showing the friend from whom he had borrowed the ticket money a letter from Congressman Quillen thanking him for his visit to the Washington office and promising to do all he could for Lindsey with the VA matter.

A tale told by G. H. Conner - a friend of Lindsey's for a decade - dates back to 1963 and illustrates the misunderstanding sometimes evident between Lindsey and the rest of the world. "Perry had some hunting dogs and he got the idea of holding an auction one Saturday and trying to sell some of them. I agreed to be the auctioneer and we advertised in the News-Record," Conner relates. Conner said that on the day of the auction he drove to Lindsey's Upper Middle Creek Road home expecting to find only Lindsey and his 15 to 30 dogs. "But when I got there I found about 15 men standing on the bank above Perry's house. One had come from Georgia and another from Virginia to trade hunting dogs. So Perry started to catch and tie up the dogs with bailing cord. But he'd catch three and one cord would break and that dog would get away. Finally, I told Perry we had enough dogs to start with and I motioned the men to come down closer to the house." But the men kept their distance as Conner started the auction. He went through the auction with the men standing on the bank. Perry introduced each of his dogs by name, and gave each one quite a build-up, according to Conner. But apparently no one had come to buy since not one of the men bid anything on a single one of Perry's dogs.

"Perry got so mad that he went in his house and got a long-barreled pistol. He waved that gun in the air and told them all to get off his property," Conner recalls. But Perry wasn't mad at his "buddy, George." "I told him I had tried and he said he knew I had," Conner remembers.

Dr. John Sonner became acquainted with Lindsey when Lindsey fell into a fire and was burned in 1967. He fondly describes Lindsey as a "true eccentric." Sonner says, "I really liked the old man." Once, Lindsey was unsuccessful in getting into chat with the doctor during office hours, so he waited and followed Dr. Sonner to a Rotary meeting that night. "He just came into the meeting and sat down beside me to talk," Sonner says. " I wasn't offended because he wasn't trying to bother me. Perry had something he wanted to tell his friend the doctor and, to him, there was no reason why he couldn't come in the meeting and sit down beside him and tell him."

Sonner took time out in his office one day in 1968 to record Lindsey's singing and plying on a musical instrument, which Lindsey made himself. "I don't know what he called that instrument but it was really something. It sounded like a whole band," Sonner recalls. The doctor also noted that it was on that day that Mr. Lindsey told of an early childhood memory of old folks shucking corn and singing. "He sang the song they had sung and, it was pretty bawdy. It was probably handed down from the Middle ages," Sonner noted. Not only could Lindsey make his own Musical instruments - he liked to make walking canes, too. Conner relates that at one time he had about three of Perry's canes around his office. Tourists would come in and notice them and ask to buy them. Conner sold the first on for $5, the second for $8 and third for $10, he says. "The next time I saw Perry I gave him the money and told him that if he had a few more canes to bring them in and maybe I could sell them for him," Conner says. A few days later Lindsey came in with both of his arms full of canes for Conner. He also had a bill made out for $58.60, which Conner, after protesting, ended up paying for the close-to fifty canes. Conner's friends took it as a good joke and confiscated most of the canes. Conner recalls that when he told Lindsey about the missing canes, his friend Perry brought him in a special cane with a dog's head carved on it.

Dogs were Perry Lindsey's friends. According to state Trooper Mayford Ramsey who found Lindsey dead of a heart failure Monday night, Dec. 3, one of Perry's dogs was in the room with him. Ramsey described the dog as "almost starved to death."

According to Nathaniel Maples - Lindsey's neighbor for the past 25 years - Perry always kept dogs, including blue tics, redbones, rabbit beagles and other hunting animals. And Maples, the last persons to have seen Lindsey alive - a week ago Friday - tells how it was the presence of the dogs that tipped him off that something was wrong with Lindsey. "It was Friday when I saw him going in the house last," Maples said last week. "Then I didn't see any smoke coming from his chimney on Saturday and Isaw his dogs going back and forth across the road looking for him. So I > decided something was wrong with 'Old Perry' and my son-in-law called the law," Maples concludes. Maples and Lindsey hadn't been friendly for the past four years - ever since Maples hinted that Lindsey should clean up better if he wanted any more rides to the store for dog food. "That made him mad and he never spoke to me except to get on me after that," Maples said. Sonner explained that "Perry had his own rules and he insisted on living by them." Conner noted. "A person just had to accept Perry for what he was. He lived like he wanted to." An intelligent person according to Conner and others, Lindsey wrote many letters to his friends. One letter he wrote to Conner in 1967 reflects something of his personality.

The letter begins: " Dear George Old Buddy, I have made arrangements for Sonner and his wife to bring his camera and paper recorder up some Sunday evening and he is wanting some pictures of some of my nicest dogs to have enlarged and hang up in his office.
