Nick sat beside Stephanie’s hospital bed watching her heart monitor. He ran a hand through his hair and then stood up. She had been asleep for almost 2 days. The doctors had assured them all that she was not in a coma, merrily a deep sleep resulting from the trauma. He walked over to the window, shoving his hands in his pockets. He didn’t know why he was here, but for some reason, he felt like he had to be here if she woke up. He turned around and looked back at the bed, she was still lying motionless hooked up to several machines breathing steadily. Nick sat back down in the chair he had been occupying for the past 3 hours. He leaned back and rubbed his eyes with a sigh he looked up and noticed Stephanie’s hand move slightly, or was it his imagination? He leaned closer to the bed and picked up her hand, “Stephanie?”
The beeping noise returned, bouncing around her head, but there was something else. A voice, someone was saying her name. She moved slightly and opened her eyes slowly, only to see a haze.
Nick watched her eyes slowly open, and his heart almost dropped, “Stephanie?”
She couldn’t see anything but a dark haze. She could barely make out anything at all. Someone was there though, someone was holding her hand, and saying her name.
Nick watched as her eyes opened, and stared straight ahead, “Are you awake?” he asked confused at her dazed expression.
Stephanie tried to pull her hand back at the voice. She knew it was familiar, but she wasn’t sure, “Who’s there?”
Nick was scared all of a sudden when he realized she couldn’t see him. He waved a hand in front of her face, and she didn’t even blink. “It’s Nick.”
Stephanie smiled, “Nick?”
“Yeah.”
“What’s wrong? I can’t see anything.”
“I don’t know,” he answered, “but I’ll go get a doctor.” He walked out into the hall and down to the nurse’s station, “Excuse me, my friend is in room 209, she just woke up and she can not see.”
“I’ll page the doctor, and be right there,” the nurse answered.
Nick turned to walk back to the room when he saw A.J. coming down the hall. He stopped him before he entered the room, “She’s awake.”
A.J. looked relieved, “She’s alright?”
“I don’t know.”
“What do you mean you don’t know?”
“She can’t see anything A.J.”
“What?”
“The doctor is coming to see her.”
Nick started to walk back into the room, but A.J. stopped him, “Are you telling me that Stephanie is blind?”
