MAGICAL BEGINNINGS

The Backstreet Boys first started off by meeting at Disney land.Howie Dorough and A.J. McLean knew each other because they had taken singing lessons together. At an audition, Howie,A.J,and Nick Carter(who was A.J.'s friend from early on) met Kevin Richardson. They tried singing and liked the way their voices blended together. Still they felt that they needed a fifth to actually be a group. So Kevin decided to call his cousin in Florida, who was also a singer,to come to Disney World and join the group! So his cousin,Brian Littrell, gladly came.

Now this newly formed group needed a name...What could be a hot name that described them and where they were from? Apparently, the BACKSTREET BOYS!! Now how did they come up with this name? Back then, there was an abandoned lot known as Backstreet Market(which was a flea market). It was a popular place for couples to hang out. Soooo...they named their newly formed group Backstreet Boys because as Kevin said they would always be boys.

Now this hot new group to become, the Backstreet Boys, did little gigs at high school, theme parks, and talent shows. While waiting to hit it big, the Boys got know each other. Their very first track was "Tell Me That I'm Dreaming" that Lou Pearlman had composed. Lou believed in the Boys from the very beginning. A.J. thanks Lou a.k.a and calls him "Big Poppa".

Soon the BSB started getting lots of fans at the small gigs they did. They were out to prove that they were not just another handsome faced group with a false sound. They wanted to set themselves apart from all the other music acts. So, Donna and Johnny Wright, who were their management team, started setting up bigger gigs for them.

THE BIG BREAK

The BSB was doing an awesome job at their live performances so Donna and Lou decided that they needed a bigger recording company.

So once during a concert Donna called her friend , who was a talent scout for Mercury records. She held the phone high up in the air and the smooth voices and delighted screams from the fans be heard...As fate has it, he wasn't home but his answering machine got all of it and he was extremely interested....

Now this could be their big chance for hitting it big!! Donna's friend David McPherson decided to meet the boys on their next stop. He could see what a sensation they would be. The Boys immediately signed a recording contract with Mercury Records in 1993

Later, McPherson became a director at Jive Records. Since the Boys unique pop style wasn't "in" yet, Mercury Records dropped them like a hot potato! So McPherson, knowing what sensation theBSB was, signed them up at Jive Records.

FIRST SINGLE

The Boys needed some polishing in their singing and dancing. So the Boys started collaborating with professional vocal coaches, stylists, choreographers, producers, and musicians who could bring them up to the next level.

The Boys went for all sorts of music: R&B, hip-hop, blues, gospel, and pop. They had the inspiration and the vocal harmony to really make it. They liked many groups and enjoyed all sorts of music.

When they were ready to rock n' roll in 1995, they recorded their first single!! The Boys went to Sweden, Stockholm to work with Denniz PoP of Ace of Base fame. She produced their first single, "We've Got It Goin' On"! The Boys recorded it in a studio called Cheiron Studios.

Looking at their fame now theBoys really did have it goin' on!

CONQUERING THE EAST

Their music didn't quite make it in the U.S. because the U.S. the U.S. just wasn't into stuff like that. So they started in the East. Boy, did they hit it big. They made many songs and became extremely popular. They were well known in the East and did many concerts there. Luckily for them their competion Take That decided to quit. They were only a little behind the Spice Girls. Then the Boys made their second single.

SECOND SINGLE

The Boys were really hot in the East. They then conquered the West with their second single. It was called "Quit Playing Games(With My Heart)". It became a real hit in the east as well as the west. Tn the U.S., the music was now "in". After that the Boys made other singles like "Everybody(Backstreet"s Back)" and "As Long As You Love Me". The Boys then got 5 awards!!They were:

  • 1)Best International Band
  • 2)Best Album for "Backstreet's Back"
  • 3)Best Album Cover for "Backstreet Back"
  • 4)Best Male Haircut: Nick Carter
  • 5)Best Video for "Everbody(Backstreet's Back)"

Now the BSB were really with it. They had finally received all of the deserved attention in America. They had finally made progress in their homeland, the U.S.

    Ain't that great?!
