What is the legend of the saiyajins you ask? Well the answer is here. In the world of Dragonball Z there was a planet in which two groups lived. One group was an advanced race that built huge cities and invented marvelous technologies. The other race was called the saiyajin. They were as barbaric as they come. They were savages to the core. They had no friends and needed no friends. But the worse thing of all...they had am insatiable lust for fighting. This brought the two groups into conflict with each other. For generations they fought nether side winning. The battles all turned out to a draw. The advanced race were weak by themselves but by their great numbers and technology..they managed to give the saiyajin a good fight. The saiyajin were few in numbers but were very strong. It would take at least ten people to beat one. But on the night of a full moon..a group of saiyajin managed to organize all the other groups in order to attack all at once. They did this but were held at bay buy the more technologically advanced civilization until they looked at the full moon. Doin this the saiyajin turned into a form called Oozaru. This "Oozaru" form can be best described as a were-monkey type of being. Just imagine King Kong. This form increased their by power ten fold. This gave them the edge to destroy their enemy. But what were they supposed to do now. They had no more enemies to fight and quench their lust for blood. They started to fight amongst themselves until a mysterious race passed by the saiyajin's planet. The mysterious beings were in need of a planet to live on. They offered the saiyajins space pods to go out and conquer their planet for them. They did this and the saiyajin realized that with this type of technology that let them travel to different places, they could fight forever. The saiyajin became sort of planet brokers. They recevieved orders for planets. With every order, they sent a saiyajin to wipe out the planet's inhabitants. With weak inhabitants they sent weak saiyajin which were normally kids...with stronger inhabitants they usually sent adults to fight. One generation a phenomenon occured. A being known as the super saiyajin was born into the saiyajin race. His power was unimagineable. But he could only sustain the super saiyajin in Oozaru form. The bad thing was that he could not control himself. One day he destroyed the planet he was on killing himself also. The people of the saiyajin waited for the next one to appear. During this time they named their planet Vegeta after their king. The king had a son who's power level that soared way above that of a normal saiyajin. His father named him Vegeta after himself. Everyone expected him to become the legendary super saiyajin. This is where Dragonball Z picks up with Vegeta, Radditz, and Nappa going off to fight Goku.
