"And Then Nothing Turned Itself Inside-Out"
Yo La Tengo
ON Sale!
The beating heart of Yo La Tengo can be found in the
marriage of drummer Georgia Hubley and guitarist Ira
Kaplan. Their collaboration over the past two decades has
proved to be one of indie rock's most enduring and endearing
combos, with their signature eclectic musical adventurism
and ability to walk a shaky line between the extremes of
noisy feedback overdrive and sweet melodic pop. Their new
album (their 10th!), "And Then Nothing Turned Itself
Inside-Out," finds Hubly and Kaplan meditating on the
maturity of not only their music but their love.
"Standing on the Shoulder of Giants"
Oasis
ON Sale!
The lumbering giants of Britpop (and self-described "biggest
rock & roll band in the world") return to the fray with a
bombastic, hook-laden, fuzzed-out follow-up to "Be Here
Now." Though "Standing on the Shoulder of Giants" doesn't
bring anything new to the Oasis table, fans of their
anthemic, Beatlesesque rock won't be disappointed by such
standout tracks as "Gas Panic" and "Where Did It All Go
Wrong" that harken back to the glory days of "(What's the
Story) Morning Glory?"
"Lazy Line Painter Jane"
Belle and Sebastian
ON Sale!
For fans of this Scottish musical collective's fey pop gems,
"Lazy Line Painter Jane" is a must-own. This box set
collects all of the songs previously available only on the
imported EPs, "Lazy Line Painter Jane," "3-6-9 Seconds of
Light," "Dog on Wheels," and "This Is Just a Modern Rock
Song." Perfect pop for now people.
"Bloodflowers"
The Cure
ON Sale!
Robert Smith has long teetered on the edge of the buoyant
pop and brooding mope-rock worlds. On what threatens to be
the last Cure album, "Bloodflowers," Smith certainly veers
into the murk, going out not with a bang but a whimper. Amid
ethereal synth and melancholic guitar melodies, his vocals
croak and soar through tales of love lost, revealing an
album that's as beautiful and timeless as it is dark and
aching.
IT'S CRIMINAL: OVERLOOKED ALBUMS
********************************
Bad press, poor distribution, tiny labels, ahead of their
time--for one reason or another, these albums are criminally
underrated and even overlooked. In a just world, the
Tindersticks' "Simple Pleasures," Refused's "The Shape of
Punk to Come," and Zoobombs' "Welcome Back, Zoobombs!" would
be considered as enduring and inspiring as the Clash's
"London Calling" or My Bloody Valentine's "Loveless." Don't
make the same mistake twice; check out Amazon.com's list of
underrated gems and give them the chance they deserve.

THE GREAT (SMASHING) PUMPKIN: BILLY CORGAN
******************************************
Billy Corgan and the Smashing Pumpkins return with a
reconstituted lineup and a newfound passion for amped-up,
unadulterated rock & roll on their fire-breathing new
record, "Machina: The Machines of God." Amazon.com's Matthew
Cooke speaks with Corgan about his approach to the new
record, its resemblance--or lack thereof--to past triumphs,
and what it is like, finally, to feel respected.

Kittie
ON Sale!
Not since the Refused issued their manifesto "The Shape of
Punk to Come" has a band displayed such a reinvigorated
faith in the pathos and passion of punk-rock rebellion. With
musical chops that belie their age (the all-girl members are
still awaiting high school graduation), Kittie smash their
head on punk rock with fresh abandon. The chilling cut
"Brackish" may be among the most explosive debut songs in
the past five years with its combination of satanic yowls,
kittenish vocals, heavy-metal drum slam, and punk-rock fury.
"My Idle Hands"
Fifty Tons of Black Terror
Check it Out!
Like some evil spawn of Nick Cave or the bastard stepchild
of the Jesus Lizard comes Fifty Tons of Black Terror, the
darkest, noisiest bunch of punks to emerge in recent
memory. Their riffs are huge, their outlook menacing, and
the vocals of frontman Charlie Finke pack a guttural
wallop. With songs like "The Fool at Blood Gully" and
"Creeper's Reef," Fifty Tons of Black Terror dredge the
murkiest gunk at the bottom of the rock barrel.
"Chappaquiddick Skyline"
Chappaquiddick Skyline
Check it Out!
Sure, Joe Pernice may be the gloomiest crooner since Nick
Drake moped his way through his short life, but, like Drake,
it doesn't prevent him from writing beautiful songs that
resonate with grace and fragile tenderness. "Chappaquiddick
Skyline" backs away from the lush orchestration of Pernice's
last outing with the Pernice Brothers and heads into the
lonesome, sparse landscape of his old group, the Scud
Mountain Boys. Lovely and oh-so sad.
"March to Fuzz"
Mudhoney
Check it Out!
This is an essential document of the quintessential grunge
band. Their incendiary live shows could create a mosh pit in
a seminary, but their recordings were hit or miss. No
longer. "March to Fuzz" culls the most explosive moments of
their waxed output (including "Touch Me I'm Sick" and "Into
Your Shtick") and combines them with a stellar collection of
B-sides and rarities (including the disemboweling cut
"Fuzzbuster").
"Bang"
The Jesus Lizard
Check it Out!
The Jesus Lizard is dead; long live the Jesus Lizard. "Bang"
chronicles the life and death of one of the most abrasive,
atonal, and scathing bands ever to menace the musical
underground. Rising from the ashes of the seminal noise-rock
outfit Scratch Acid, guitarist David Sims and screecher
David Yow (easily the scariest man in rock) joined forces
with Duane Dennison for a decade of musical thuggery. It's
an excellent document, capturing the Jesus Lizard's chaotic
and assaulting live shows, their postindustrial punk-rock
sludge, and David Yow's scream-in- your-face,
punch-in-your-gut vocal antics.

UNDISCOVERED GEM: "EIGHTH" BY ELEVENTH DREAM DAY
************************************************
"Eighth"
Eleventh Dream Day
Check it Out!
The criminally overlooked Eleventh Dream Day released a
wondrous suite of albums in the '80s and '90s; "Eighth" is
their swan song. Floating harmonies and tender melodies
intertwine with rampaging guitars, thrumming distortion, and
quirky songcraft. Eleventh Dream Day is a gift that keeps
giving: members have gone on to found Tortoise and
Freakwater, two of today's more innovative and evocative
bands.
