While sitting out for seven years in a bitter contract
dispute, XTC's Andy Partridge and Colin Moulding kept busy
at their craft, writing songs that they discovered fell into
two categories: the orchestral and the electric. The latter
batch of songs have, at long last, found their way onto
"Wasp Star (Apple Venus Volume 2)," the voltage enhanced,
noisier twin to last year's symphonic "Apple Venus Volume
1." Full and richly layered with dazzling harmonies and
bright, interlocking guitar parts, "Wasp Star" is pure XTC.

While handling the bass duties for Belle & Sebastian, Stuart
Davies formed Looper with his wife Karn as a side project, a
home-cooked stew of samples, stories, and beats. But it soon
evolved into a full-fledged band, and Davies eventually left
Belle & Sebastian to concentrate on Looper full time. Be
thrilled that he has. "Geometrid" is a groove-heavy
pleasure, utterly original.

Original Riot Grrl warriors Sleater-Kinney return with their
fifth album, "All Hands on the Bad One," which ups the ante
of an already impressive array of fierce and fun rock
albums. Though Sleater-Kinney's trademark twitchy guitar
riffage and shout-and-response vocal harmonies are here in
full force, "All Hands on the Bad One" finds the churlish
and girlish trio slipping the bonds of punk and heading
towards a more mature and realized sound.

Since the mid-'80s, Bobby Gillespie's band Primal Scream
have been at the forefront of the movement to combine groovy
dance rhythms with visceral rock-based sounds. On the eve of
the release of the band's unabashedly brilliant CD

about the group's creative process, the death of the
Creation label, and World War III.
