Archivist speaks – Well, I wrote this little ditty the night that Disease aired in the UK.

Earlier in the month we'd been having a discussion about who should have gone Harry or Kes so that Seven could come in.

The majority wanted them both out an airlock and quickly.

So, here goes Kat and her major backtrack.

The disease and why I'm starting to like Harry

    OOOOh!

    I just watched it.

The line wasn't as obvious as I thought it was going to be and in the context it was shown it was someway understandable ("ex posto facto" anyone?).

Anyway I've decided (cos I'm in the mood to write lots) to talk a little about Star Fleet's best ensign Harry "read me like a book" Kim.

Ok - First of all series 1 - 4 Harry was a boring character, dull and uninteresting serving only as someone to make Tom look good and sexy and...(well, you get the picture). If I had the choice I would have spaced Harry instead of Kes. Just because Kes had so much more about her than Harry - she did, until they grew her hair and made her boring, have spark.

He was a keen ensign with very little angst (Kat like angst!) and a boring back-story that involved a faultless Fleet record, a fiancée that he adored and doting parents. The actor himself is quite easy on the eye but if that's all I want I could watch Sunset Beach all day everyday (although it is not bad if you are just channel surfing, Oh ok.) He was in the leagues of Neelix and Chakotay and even *shudder* Naomi Wildman as is and as was.

Season 3 and we have Trek does sex episode - Favourite Son. I have only seen that episode once and would not like to repeat the experience ever again. He's scared of B'elanna and he worships the ground Janeway walks on. Could this guy be any more dormant?

Season 4 and Harry was in *lust* with Seven of Nine and served primarily as her light relief. Not a fun job for anyone and along with Tuvok and Neelix he got sidelined into oblivion. But then we have the start of the transformation - Killing Game and Harry's actually doing something although he's still a little jumpy. That's the kind of Harry Kim I would have as my bridge officer not the snivelling 'Yes ma'am' Harry Kim of before.

But along comes season 5 and we are served up with two interesting Harry eps that show a different side to him, we see Harry growing up and it has been a vast improvement. I mean Timeless and Disease.

In Timeless we get Harry Kim 15 years on and full to the brim with angst, angst galore, in fact angst everywhere. He's wilful, he's forceful, and tact flew out the window 10,000 light-years back. Harry Kim's got attitude and Garret Wang can make it believable. The question you have to ask is why didn't TPTB let him flex his acting muscles more.

Timeless is a stellar episode anyway which, shows a very interesting turn about in the Harry and Tom relationship, it's almost role reversal. Tom is being cautious and Harry isn't caring about the consequences. I far preferred 15 years on Harry but even "Now" Harry was a far more 3d character and the scene at the end with Janeway and the look on his face, despite all the impressive CGI was the most powerful thing about the ep.

And now in disease, we have, SHOCK HORROR, Harry Kim shouting at Janeway on her bridge. Telling her with quiet authority about love. WOW didn't Janeway get burned by Mark!! No, wonder she's depressed. I thought the ep worked well on many levels. For once I CARED about Harry less so about Tal but she was new. I thought the way the Janeway/Kim scenes were especially well handled and the final scene between the pair in sickbay was really good even if it did contain the infamous TP line. As for K/7 well from this episode there is a lot of hope with the "Get well soon." message that Seven gives him. But I don't like Seven and Harry together she's too *in* control.

As for Trek can't write romance. I thought that the scenes between Harry and Tal were well played, of course not an inch of the sexual chemistry and tension of Blood Fever but still showing us that even the Season 5 writers can write semi-believable romance. The problem with the episode was tacking on the whole renegade bit to spice up the plot a little - in my view it wasn't necessary and took things away from the main point of the plot. My only other gripe was the lack of P/T - surely they could have commented on it - instead of the Chopin line.

So a 7/10 for The Disease - a likeable ep but still flawed in places.

The best part in that ep was the bit where Harry shouted at Janeway on the bridge and then continued to lecture harry in her ready-room. OH MY GOD P/T together for more than 2 seconds viewing time

Wow prez! When you get typing, there is nothing stopping you :)

Yeah I loved the bit where Harry barked at Janeway on the bridge, funniest damn thing all ep.

Don't you think she's been a real bitch lately?

I mean she like breaches the Prime Directive every episode, and Tom does it once and he gets demoted, Harry does it once and he gets reprimanded. Where does it end?

I long for an episode where the marquis on board get pissed and take Voyager over and Janeway gets killed, but that's just me and I'm twisted and have had too much coffee. Muhahahaha.

    I'm outta here
