10 things you probably did not know about:
HUNGARY!
- It was in
1901 that the Hungarian Football Federation was founded. The current
league champions are Ujpest, but their best known domestic side are
Ferencvaros.
- England first met Hungary in 1908.
England won the game 7-0!!!
- The teams have met 19 times. England have
won 12, Hungary six with 1 draw. The last Hungarian victory was in the
1962 World Cup Finals.
- Hungarian football's glory years were the
1950's. On a visit to Wembley in 1953, Puskas and Co won 6-3. To add
insult to injury, they won 7-1 a year later in Budapest!!!
- The Hungarians were no mugs back then,
finishing second in the World Cup twice. They lost 4-2 against Italy in
1938 and went down 3-2 to West Germany in 1954.
- Hungary have won Olympic Gold three times
(1952, 64, 68) meaning their team has squeezed the top platform more
times than any other nation.
- However there has been no success in
European Championship. They failed to make Euro 96 coming a miserable
fourth in Group 3 behind Switzerland, Turkey and Sweeden.
- England last met Hungary as preparation
for Euro 96 under Terry Venables. A 3-0 Wembley win was secured with 2
goals from Anderton and one from Platt.
- Times have been hard of late. After
coming second to Norway in the qualifiers for France 98, they suffered
the embarassment of losing 12-1 on aggregate against Yugoslavia in the
play-offs!!!!
- In Euro 2000 Qualifying, Hungary are
currently third behind Portugal and Romania.
