Asking Price: $4000 USD

Here is you chance to own one of the premiere toolmaker's milling machines in excellent mechanical condition. The FP1 occupies a small footprint but is stout enough to take cuts that a Bridgeport would envy. Yet even with this capacity it is widely regarded as one of the most precise and versatile machines ever built. The accessories available for Deckels are almost too numerous to mention. To get a better idea of the reputation of Deckels and the tooling for them, please visit http://www.lathes.co.uk/deckel/

The reason for the sale is simple... I am reducing some of my Deckel collection so that I can finance my addiction (more machinery!). In essence, my wife is forcing me to live within my means! I have several Deckel items for sale, including tooling and a tooling cabinet.

The FP1 offered here is one of the later INCH machines (roughly 1969), identical to those in the website above. Most that you find available (including the one that recently sold on eBay (which was missing a handwheel, BTW)) are of the older 'lever selector' vintage. The 'handwheel selector' machines provide a larger number of gear ranges than the predecessors. The machine has powered X and Z feeds, which can be engaged simultaneously. It also includes an Accurite II DRO that is in near mint condition.

This FP1 has the following:
  • 40 taper horizontal
  • MT4 vertical head
  • overarm and its support
  • pheneolic cover when neither vertical nor overarm are installed
  • Power feed rates: 16 from 0.4 to 20 IPM
  • Spindle range: 16 from 40 to 2800 RPM
  • X travel: ~12 inches
  • Y travel: ~6 inches
  • Z travel: ~14 inches
  • Built-In coolant system

The mill is currently configured with:
  • Operator's Manual (original) and Parts Manual (copy)
  • Near Mint 2 axis Accurite II DRO
  • Original Deckel worklight
  • Accurite II two axis DRO (mint condition)
  • Fixed table
  • taper plug (keeps horiz clean)
  • 4 leveling bolts

    Included tooling (reference the photos):
  • A non-deckel milling vise
  • 40 to MT4 taper adapter (can be hard to find these)
  • 40 taper drive ring adapter
  • 3 40 taper collets
  • 2 MT4 collets (one broken, but possibly still usable)
  • Some additional tooling may be made available (horiz arbors, adapters, etc)

The mill is fitted with the original high quality two speed 3-phase motor. The design is such, however, that it would be very easy to replace this motor with a single phase one. Doing this would allow you to discard the power cabinet shown in the picture. My belief is that you are better off buying a phase converter, though. The machine is in excellent mechanical condition, with only a few very small holes in the table (see picture). The paint is original.

The operator's manual that is included with the auction is very complete. It covers the operation of not only the mill but most of the accessories that are available. There is also a section on maintenance that describes replacement of leadscrews and loading of bearings (i.e. it is very complete).

    Shipping

The mill is currently located in Santa Cruz, California. Shipping will be FOB from 95060 and is roughly 1600 pounds. The machine will be shrink wrapped, skidded and loaded for free, or you can have a custom crate built for it for roughly $200.
