Simple Ways To Get Organized

By Terri J. Andrews

1. Are your kids slobs as soon as they walk through the door? Are bookbags thrown onto the floor and shoes all over the living room? Ready for a remedy? Next to the front door place a basket or a coat rack for the kids shoes, coats, umbrellas and odds & ends. When they walk in the door - they will have a place to "unload" everything from the day.

2. Keep an oversized family calendar hanging around. Note everything from soccer practice and bills that need paid to chores that need to be done and errands that need to be taken care of. Every day refer to the calendar and use it when planning daily and weekly events. At a glance everyone will know what the schedule looks like and what to expect.

3. Try to incorporate family time into simple activities. Use dinner to talk about family plans and news that should be shared. When in the car, turn off the radio and talk to your kids or play road games. And prior to bedtime - make it special by adding "one-on-one" time with each child. As one takes a bath or is doing homework, play or talk to the other child. Children love a parent's undivided attention - your time is always appreciated.

4. Use plastic bin organizers on shelves to hold toys, crayons, books, movies and stuffed animals - rather than a toybox and other shelving. ADHD children have trouble with toyboxes and need their entire world to be organized EXTERNALLY. Rather than have junk boxes, toyboxes, etc...put everything in a plastic bin and create a "special place" for each item.

5. Create a chore calendar. When the child completes a chore, place a sticker over the day. Stickers earn treats, outings or cash allowances.

6. Do the kids fight over the TV, the computer or the phone? Create a family schedule. Allot a time period for each child and for that time - they get to use that particular item.

7. Create a 24-hour rule. If they don't ask you to go somewhere or to have a friend over 24 hours in advance - they can't do it.

8. Teach your children to make and use to-do lists.

9. Have regular family meetings to discuss such topics as chores, vacations, allowances and changes in schedules.

10. Get rid of the junk! The less junk kids have to mess with (toys, clothes, books, movies...) the easier it will be to clean up and to stay organized. Plus, don't buy toys as treats - instead use family outings and friends over as rewards.

11. Post family rules near the family calendars.
