USING HERBS TO CALM ADHD

By Terri J. Andrews

Parents from all over the world have been writing in asking what herbal supplements they can give their child - a herb that may either calm their child or at least help them to sleep at night. After researching this question, we have come up with the following herbs that can be used:

Valerian Root - has been used for this disorder with dramatic results and little or no side effects. Valerian is probably the most popular of all herbs because of its wonderful calming effects. Other herbs that are useful are:

catnip

chamomile

hops

lobelia

passion flower

thyme

skullcap

and wood botany.

Please note: don't use chamomile or lobelia on an ongoing basis and stop completely if you are allergic to ragweed.

Herbal products can be purchased many forms (leaf, root, etc) and they are to be boiled and used as tea; in liquid extract that can be added to juice or in capsules for older kids to swallow.

Tea's are made by boiling a certain amount of the plant (usually, 1 teaspoon per cup) for 10-15 minutes. Strain and drink. For example - you can boil a teaspoon on chamomile flowers for a wonderfully relaxing tea that has a unique flavor that may remind you of apples.

There are some tinctures that are already prepared to ease hyperactive children, and can be quite effective. Rescue Remedy is one, and this liquid can be used on children, animals and adults. Call 1-800-548-0075 for more information. And Herbs for Kids makes an EXCELLENT product - plus they have a fine line of children's herbal remedies for a variety of problems (from ear aches and high temperatures to colds and flu) and they can be reached at 406-587-0180. (www.herbsforkids.com) Personally, I have used their products and I find them to be very effective.

Remember, before you use any herb, please research the plant before ingesting it. Because I am not an herbalist, I can only tell you what plants I have found effective. Please use caution when self-treating yourself or your family with herbal medicine. You need to research the plant thoroughly, as well as its side effects and if it can be mixed with other medicines.

I personally believe in the medicinal properties of herbs, and I use them on my children. Valerian and catnip have worked best, but before you use them on your own child, please do your homework.
