FORMUS WHITE
(Formus was our special guest at our 2/1/00 show in Punta Gorda, Florida)

Formus White was born March 17, 1945 in Wrightsville, Georgia. After moving to Cleveland, Ohio, he attended East Tech High. White was an excellent all-around athlete, starring in football, and he also ran track and cross country. After graduating in 1963, he enlisted in the Air Force and was a member of the USAFE boxing team in Europe. He won several middleweight and light heavyweight titles.

In 1965 and 1966, he was a teammate of SJC Boxing's Steve Canton, and well known cutman, Joe Souza. Canton, who has seen many of the great fighters from the amateurs through their pro careers, has often said that "Formus White is the greatest amateur I have ever seen, it is a shame that White never fought pro, he would have definitely been a world champion."

One of White's favorite fighters of that era was the great Dick Tiger, former middleweight and light heavyweight champion. White had a similar style, but he was a little more versatile. Formus White could punch and could box. He was quick and was a very smart, slick technician.

After boxing, White drove a truck for twenty years for Beking Moving and Storage Co. Today, though disabled from a neck injury, he still enjoys the fights, and watches them whenever possible.
