"JERRY BROWN TRIBUTE"
8/29/32-11/7/00

Jerry Brown died, after a 27 month battle with cancer, on November 7, 2000. Jerry Brown was someone who made friends easily, and if he liked you, he wanted you to be a part of his life and get you to know the other people who were close to him. Jerry became involved with SJC Boxing during the press conference of the very first War on the Peace River show in Punta Gorda. He volunteered to pick up our special guests, Carmen and Josie Basilio, who were arriving at the Fort Myers airport and needed to be taken to the hotel. Jerry, an avid boxing fan, had only come to the press conference as a spectator but wound up becoming an integral part of the SJC Boxing Club.

For the next several shows Jerry lent a hand wherever needed---from not only hauling people around, to filming the shows, etc. Over time, Jerry and his friends became as important to our shows as the fighters themselves. Jerry lined up sponsors, set up the VIP dinners, doled out tickets, took pictures, and did whatever else was needed. Jerry was a real boxing person. He loved the sport, and he loved a good joke. Jerry was a real friend, not only of ours, but to many others. He was actually much more than a friend, he was like a brother, and he is missed.

Jerry loved life and fought a valiant effort to remain with us. He is missed by his family, especially his wife, Linda, and his son, Chris, and he is missed by his friends. Instead, he is paving the way, making it a little easier for us to follow.

When contacted about Jerry’ death, noted boxing historian Hank Kaplan said, “I have been thinking a lot about Jerry lately, after I heard how ill he had become. Jerry used to write to me and send pictures and clippings. Jerry was a wonderful man. Jerry was a man of principal.”
