The Illegitimate Prince
By Tiffany Collins

Barrel Skellington yawned as he stretched out in his bed, rubbing his eyes sleepily. Time to get started for the day. Licking his lips he sat up, glancing around. Julius, his gay partner of a little more then a year, was seemingly missing. Odd, he usually never got up before 10. Was was he doing up now, at 8:30?
"Good morning!" came a bright and chipper cry suddenly. "Time to eat!" In walked Julius with a tray of delicately prepared foods. Fried bat wings, diced rats, numerous other delectable foods.
"Wow, you really didn't have to go through all this," his still half asleep companion said as the tray was laid across his knees.
"Course I did," came the reply. "I love you." The other man sat on his side of the bed, smiling as Barrel picked up a fork and took a bite of his breakfast.
"Mmm," he said. "Wonderful. I know you don't cook often but when you do, it's to die for."
"Thanks. Only the best for you."
"What a doll." Another bite. "Superb, you've outdone yourself this time."
"So you've said. I just wanted to treat ya to something nice, start your day off right."
"How lovely of you, it was a delightful surprise." He took a bite of toast. "So what's on our schedule for today?"
"I had to go grocery shopping," Julius replied. "We're out of milk and butter. And it's my turn to pick them up, so don't say it's yours. As for you, I guess you're free to do whatever you want."
A thoughtful nod. "I suppose so. I'll probably just head down to Town Hall to help out with the holiday. I didn't go yesterday, and I know Shock's got big plans for this year. Last I heard, she had a few great new changes for this year."
"Oh really? Like what?"
"Brand new designs for the jack-lanterns and tombstones, new scaring routes to be taken, all kinds of things."
"That's great, Halloween this year is gonna rock."
"Yeah, I know." He swallowed some of the juice. "With my sister, how could it not?"
"Indeed." Giving Barrel a quick kiss Julius rose from his spot, smiling. "Well, I'd best go make a list of what I'm gonna need at the store. Then I'm gonna head off. Okay?"
"My, we're certainly a busy beaver today."
"I had some other stuff to do as well, pay the rent, go to the library, you know. Mind if I take the car?"
"Sure, I can walk to Town Hall. It's just around the corner."
"Great then. Have fun, hope you enjoyed your breakfast."
"I did, thanks. See you later.

Barrel's task that day was to carve pumpkins, something he enjoyed doing very much. As soon as Shock had assigned him he headed off to do his assigned job.
He had been carving for an hour or more when he was approached by a young man. He was tall with black hair, his skin as startlingly pale as his own. He wore casual clothes; lose fitting jeans with a t-shirt and baseball cap. Appearing quite uptight, he flashed a nervous smile.
"Um, are you Barrel Skellington?" he asked with a quiver in his voice.
A nod. "That I am. Who might you be?"
He removed the hat. "This is kind of awkward, I've never had to do this before. My name is Alex Ghostly. I'm your son."
That caught the Pumpkin Prince off guard as he dropped his tools. They fell with a clatter to the table. "What?"
"I'm your son. You're my father."
He shook his head. "Impossible. No way. Prove it."
"I knew you'd say that, so I asked my mother for help. She had a lock of your hair kept in a plastic bag, actually, something you supposedly gave her to remember you by when you broke up. Since I work as a cop, I had the hair sent in for DNA samping, as well as some of my own." He fished around in his pockets, pulling out a piece of paper. "These are the results."
He raised an eyebrow. "You know, this sheet of paper means nothing to me. I have no clue what any of this stuff means."
"It basically shows the structure of our DNA. Within a family, you see, the structure will be so much alike. According to this, we are indeed related."
"What?" he exclaimed. "Bullshit, a son...." He grabbed the paper, examining it. "Show me, how are they alike?"
Alex used a hand to motion to one part of his own DNA strain, and then to Barrel's. "Check it out. See this pattern here on yours?"
"Yeah...."
"Well, I've got the same on mine, see? Now, compare mine to this one of my officer friends. We don't share any of these patterns. Therefore, we aren't of the same blood."
"So, we must be," the prince breathed. "Holy shit...I need some air here....."
A nod. "Sure, let's head outside." Together they headed outdoors, beginning to walk down the street.
"This can't be happening," Barrel muttered. "Who's your mother?"
"Rachael," he replied. "Rachael Ghostly."
"Shit, I should have know. I remember that lock of hair now! From when I broke up with her! Things just weren't going right, you see, I didn't like the way they were headed. Course I never have, not with women that is." A laugh. "My son!" he exclaimed. "You're really my son! I have a kid! If my memory serves me right then, you must be around....100 years old."
"97," he said. "That's right."
"Geez, I never saw any of this coming," he muttered. "I feel so old here! Wonder what dad's gonna say? Jack'll never let me see the end of this, I tell ya." A little smile. "Well, I guess you do look a lot like your old man. Nice and tall, same face and skin. Got your mother's hair, though, and her eyes."
"Oh, I dyed my hair not long ago," he replied. "Really, it's kind of green."
"Like my own," came the answer. "How uncanny. Startling the similarities, really, I should have known." A little grin. "Well, I guess there's not much left to say now except for welcome to the Skellington family," he said. "You'll like everyone, I know it. My siblings are all great, so are Jack and Sally. You'll love 'em for sure, everyone does. Gee, I'm gonna have to introduce you, aren't I?"
"Guess so." he answered.
A chuckle. "Imagine. Me, a father. My God, you grew up without me there or anything, how heartless of me! But understand, I didn't know, Rachael didn't tell me or anything! Had she told me, things today would have been a lot different. I'm sorry I wasn't there..."
"I understand," he said calmly. "Mother's already told me that it wasn't your fault. She just didn't want to cause any trouble when she found out she was gonna have me. So she left the identity of the `father unknown. Never told me until not long ago. Course I didn't believe her, which is why I wanted the DNA testing done."
"That's Rachael for you," Barrel said as they reached their destination. "Here we are," he replied as he gestured to an apartment building. "Home sweet home." It was very nice on the outside, black as night and three stories tall. They headed in, taking an elevator up to the third floor. Barrel let his boy step out first, pointing to the left. With a smile Alex headed straght on down. until he was instructed to stop at room 314.
"Here we are," Barrel said happily as they reached his place. Pulling out a key he jammed it into the lock, pushing the door open and allowing his son to step in. A slight nod from the lad. "Nice," he said. "Modern. Classy."
"Thanks," he replied. "Although barely any of the furniture is mine, it's mainly Julius'. Oh, um, yeah, about that..."
"I already know," he laughed. "You're gay."
An angry groan. "Does everybody know about that?"
"Kinda, yeah. Rumors about the royal family travel quick. Out there, everybody wants to know about the latest in the lives of the Skellingtons."
"They would. The public, go figure. If they want to know all about my private life, though, then who cares? Let them." He motioned for Alex to take a seat in the living room. "Something to drink? Cold beer?"
"Yes, that sounds nice."
With a nod the new dad headed into the kitchen, pulling out two cold ones before heading back to give one to Alex. He then took a a seat in his favourite black leather armchair. Alex sat in a matching sofa.
Barrel sighed. "So. Looks like we've got some catching up to do." He rubbed his eyes with one hand. I suddenly feel so aged. This morning I felt young and quick. Now that I've got a kid whose all grown up and making a living for himself....wow. Amazing. Tell me, are you married?"
"No sir, but I do have a wonderful girlfriend. Her name's Janine."
"Call me dad, alright? I'm your father goddamit, you don't have to be afraid of me. Now, how much do you love this girl?"
"A lot. I want to propose to her."
"How adorable. At least I haven't missed it all then. I've really gotta arrange a time to introduce you to everyone though. I thought Shock mentioned a dinner party not long ago...but I don't want to keep you hidden till then! We'll work something out."
"You know, I really want you to visit my family as well. See mom again perhaps. She'd like that."
"I don't know, boy..."
"Come on, you owe me this much at least. Please?"
He sighed. "I guess. Later on today. Happy now?"
A pleased smile. "Very."

They talked for over two hours on just about everything. Barrel on his childhood with the town villain to Alex on growing up without a dad. The time came though when his son said; "It's time to go see mom now."
"What? So soon...?" He broke off. "Well, I promised. Let's go then...."

It didn't take longer then a half hour to get to Alex's home by walking. Barrel was oddly quiet along the way, though, and he paused before going into the house.
"Hey, what's up?" Alex asked.
"Hmm? Oh, nothing really. I just haven't seen Rachael for a long time, a very long time. I really did care about her, you know. It just wasn't meant to be...."
A nod. "I understand. You don't have to if you..."
"No, I told you I would and I will. Now hurry up before I change my mind."
A smile. "Yes, dad." Taking the lead he headed up to the front door, showing his way inside.
"Mom? It's Alex."
"Come in, dear."
"I've brought company."
"Oh really?" she called back cheerfully. "Who is it?"
"Wait'll you see." He led his father through the porch and around the corner to the living room, where a woman sat in a chair watching a soap opera. As she stood up, Barrel's breath caught in his throat; tall and slim she was, with long elegant brown hair and green eyes that shimmered in the light.
Her sight fell on him, her smile fading slowly. "Barrel?" she asked. "Barrel Skellington?"
"Rachael." A grin. "Rachael Ghostly. My God." He headed over to her, sweeping her into a hug and giving her a friendly kiss. "You haven't changed a bit, my love."
"You neither, dear. Except maybe a bit more mature."
"Thanks." He released her, stepping back. "So, why didn't you tell me? That you were going to have my child, I mean?"
She shugged softly, her long black dress rising and falling with her shoulders. "I dunno, really...I just didn't want to create a fuss..."
"You know I would have come back to you, so we could raise our boy together. All this time you never told him? Or me? What did you tell people, you had no idea who the dad was? Trash your own rep, make yourself look like a bloody whore? Yeah, that's the way to go. I could have provided so much for him, Rachael, you know it, and for you too..."
She frowned. "Nothing of the past, alright? It was meant to be. Alex means a lot to me, he really does." She smiled in the lad's direction. "He's a sweet boy, and I love him a lot."
"I never said I didn't," came the heated reply. "I do to, if you want the truth. I've never had a kid, least not till now. Had I known 97 years ago that I had a son..." his voice trailed off for a second. "I can't believe you hid this from me! Goddamnit, Rachael, how fucking...ARG!" He let out a loud cry as he threw his hands into the air. "How dare you keep something this big from me! I had a right to know, he's not only yours. Jesus, Rachael, I can't believe you lied to me for this long!"
Alex cleared his throat. "Umm, I'm gonna go visit Janine...see you two later..." He headed outside.
Barrel just sighed. "Great, scared off my own son. Bloody perfect..."
"He's just a bit overwhelmed," said Rachael. "Don't worry about it."
"I guess so. This is new stuff to me. I missed the best years of his life though, he grew up without a dad! Oh, I hate it...I hate myself..."
She came closer towards him. "Don't blame yourself. Blame me."
He shook his head. "No, you had the best of intentions in the choices you made. I can't."
A smile. "You're sweet, like you always were."
"And so are you," he said quietly as he took her into his arms. "I missed you, you know, I really did. Always thought about you, even years afterward."
"So did I. Always wondered what it'd be like to have you back, to hold you again, to touch your lips again." She kissed him passionately. "Now I finally know."
"Rachael..." he protested, but didn't pull away.
"Well didn't you? Wonder where I was or what I was doing? I mean, you're the father of my child here, of course I did!"
"Yes," he admitted. "Always." He kissed her this time, slowly. She sighed as his strong hands fell down her frame, embracing her hips. Tenderly she kissed him, inviting his love. And he accepted as his lips fell to her bare neck, moving his arms so that he could pick her up carefully. "Where to?" he asked between kisses.
"Down the hall, to the left," she muttered.
With a chuckle he found his way along, collapsing with a laugh into the mattress. It was a lovely steel framed canopy bed, king size with satin sheets.
"Almost a shame messing it up," he giggled.
"Don't you dare second doubt," she warned as she kissed him. Her lips moved down his neck and then slowly toward his chest as she unbuttoned his shirt. He pulled away slightly then.
"Rachael, this is crazy! You're forgetting, I'm a gay man..."
"You think I give a shit?" she asked as her hands sped to pull away the shirt.
"Guess not," he muttered, moving to remove her own outfit.

Rachael slept sprawled across the bed an hour later, exhausted as she embraced her lover. Barrel just lay on his back, hands under his head as he stared up at the ceiling. What had he done? Made love to this woman he hadn't so much as spoken to in nearly 100 years. Hadn't so much as even known whether she existed. Where would things go from here? Would he give up his life with Julius to live like this all over again? Have a wife and a son, perhaps another child. It was such a mystery to him, his mind was swimming in confusion...
With a sigh he gently moved Rachael to the side, standing up and pulling on his pants. He buckled them up and began to scramble around for his shirt. Finding it, he pulled it on and buttoned it up.
"Nice abs," came a voice from behind him.
He turned his head, to see a woken Rachael looking at him and smiling.
"Julius already told me, numerous times. Did I wake you?" he asked.
A shrug. "Don't worry about it, I shouldn't be taking naps in the middle of the day anyways." She sat up slightly, pulling the sheets around her. "You know, this changes everything."
He nodded. "Yes, totally." A sigh. "I don't know. How any of this is going to turn out. I've always loved you, and now that there's Alex...well, that connects us now for the rest of our lives." He sat upon the bed, holding his head in his hands. "Oh, Christ, I'm so confused...."
She began to massage his shoulders, the sheet falling away. She made no move to retrieve it, however. "If you don't want to stay, Barrel, I'll understand. This was something neither of us saw coming. We didn't expect to end up like this..."
He shook his head. "No, I'll never just leave you again. I won't vanish from your life anymore. you and Alex." A sigh. "Rachael, what happened today was a mistake, you realize that. I don't know why we did it, but it shouldn't have. I still love Julius..."
"Which I understand," she replied. "Of course, Barrel, it isn't your fault." She kissed his neck. "But you owe me this much; was it good enough for you?"
He grinned as her hands continued to massage him. "Definately. I haven't made love in a long time, least not with a woman."
"Whoa, too much information, buster!!!"
His cheeks grew scarlet. "Sorry."
"Don't apologize." A little smile. "You know, why is it that the best lovers are always gay?"
"You think so?"
"Yeah, I mean you're the best I've had in ages. It's not fair that other guys should get you instead of me!"
"Shall I apologize then?"
She chuckled. "Nah, don't worry about it." She let go of his shoulders, standing up and beginning to dress. He watched, mesmerized, as she pulled on her jeans. "In any other case I'd be getting quite upset by what you're doing now," she told him. "But in your case, I'll forgive it. Been that long, has it?"
He laughed as she snapped her bra together. "Yeah."
Picking up her blouse she pulled it on, doing up the buttons. "Well, Barrel, things will never be the way they were again. Both of our lives have changed drastically in one afternoon."
A sigh as he walked over to her, wrapping his arms around her. The scent of heavenly perfume invaded his nostrils. "I know. Hopefully for the better."

Alex meanwhile sat in his girlfriend Janine's apartment, seated in a worn armchair. He was slouched over in his seat, hands over his head in a gesture of despair.
Janine walked into the room, returning from the washroom. Her beauty was clear to all she met; with short brown hair, pale skin, and the moves of a cat she was a knockout. Of average height and having a tall frame, she moved with a graceful charm. Upon seeing him now she offered an encouraging smile, sitting beside him on the arm of the chair and laying an arm across his shoulder.
"This whole 'dad' thing still getting you down, love?" she asked.
A sigh. "Yeah. And I have no idea why, you know that? I should be delighted, perfectly wonderful! Yet...I'm not. But why?"
"You're confused," she told him gently. "That's all. Unsure of what's supposed to be happening or what will happen."
"What are you, a philosopher or something?"
"No, not quite. But I think you should ease up. It'll be alright."
"Think so? I really don't want my dad to leave or anything, I so want to become a part of his life..."
"And I know he will," she told him. "I know he'll accept you with open arms. How could he not? Everyone loves Alex."
"Hopefully," he muttered, but offered an encouraging smile when she appeared worrisome. "I'm sorry, love. I know it'll be fine. It has to be."
She grinned as she fell into his lap, wrapping her arms around his neck and kissing him tenderly. "There's the man I know and love." Another kiss. "Everything will be alright, dear, trust me."
He pulled her closer to him, her perfume putting him under its spell. "I certainly hope you're right, dear. I really do."

Barrel left a while later to go back home; he had so much on his mind, what he really wanted to do right now was just think these things over.
He hadn't been watching where he'd been going until he got there; when he looked up, he was at Jack and Sally's house. A bit confused though he was he shrugged, heading up the front steps and heading inside.
"Hello?" he called. "Anyone home?"
"Ah, Barrel," called his father from the living room. "Come inside." He did so, stepping into the lavishly decorated area. "Sally's just gone out for some groceries, she'll be back soon."
"Great," he replied, sitting upon the sofa. "Jack, I need some advice."
A little nod from the former pumpkin king, who was relaxing in his favourite armchair. "Ah, yes. Something's troubling you, I can see that now. Well, first tell me what's up."
He sighed. "You're never gonna believe this, Jack. I've got a son."
"What???! Since when?"
"It's a long story."
"And I've got all day."
He sat back in the chesterfield. "Well, about 100 years ago I fell in love with this woman, Rachael Ghostly. I didn't know it then, most unfortunately, but I was nuts about her. Head over heals. But I didn't understand that. For some idiotic reason I broke up with her, and we each went our seperate ways. Not before I got her pregnant, though. So she had a baby boy, whom she named Alex. She never told me about my child though, never. Didn't want to cause any trouble, she said. So now this child of mine has tracked me down." He paused. "So Alex today comes up to me and declares that I'm his father. Well, after seeing the DNA tests, I had to admit it was true. We went back to my place for a while, just talked about things. Caught up a bit. I told him about how I'm adopted, my real parents, the fact that I'm gay and all. He understood quite well, and I was mighty grateful for that.
"After that we headed back to his mother's home--Rachael's. Almost immediately the two of us began to argue, over Alex that is. Me demanding why she hadn't told me, she firing back her responses. Of course, we scared the lad away."
"Bet you felt greatly upset over that," Jack said.
A nod. "Yes indeed. Horrified. My only son, and I'd scared him away! Awful. Well, after that me and Rachael talked for another while, until we kind of....you know..."
"Ah," he nodded. "No need to explain, I understand."
"Good, that means I don't have to elaborate. Well, of course that nearly destroyed me as well. I still have no idea why we did it, really. It just kind of happened. Now I'm concerned over what Julius will say."
"Well, I'd tell the truth if I were you," said wise old Jack. "If he loves you, then he'll accept this wholeheartedly."
"Think so?"
"I know so. If he cares about you at all, he'll understand. If Sally told me such a thing, I know I'd be able to understand; I love her. More then anything, she means so much to me. Has for over 240 years now. And I think that Julius will know where you're coming from."
A thoughtful nod. "Yeah, I see..." He stood up. "I really should go now, talk to him while I'm still inspired." He gave his skeletal father a kiss on the skull. "See you later, old man."
He smiled. "So long, son."

"Julius!" Barrel called upon stepping into his apartment. "Julius, you home?"
"In the living room," he called.
"We need to talk." He stepped into the room, where Julius sat reading upon the chesterfield. Quickly he dove into the place next to him, giving him a kiss. "You're not gonna believe a word of this, but I swear it all happened."
He laid down his novel. "Very well then, try me."
And he did. He told him everything; all about Alex, Rachael, all of it. He was dumbstruck when the tale was done.
"Wow, quite an afternoon you had," he smiled. "I guess you're expecting me to be upset about this Rachael chick, aren't you?"
"Yeah, pretty much."
"Well, I'm not. I understand you totally."
He was confused by that. "You do?"
"Yes. I wasn't always gay, you know, I know what it's like to make love to a woman. Sometimes as a gay man you miss that. You feel you need to go back to it, perhaps you'll go through a period of uncertainty as to whom you've become. Heaven knows I have enough times. That's what you're experiencing now, I believe. First-time jitters. You've found the girl you once loved. You're torn between two lives. I understand totally."
Barrel was pleased. "Thank you, Julius. I've already chosen though, I could never leave you to be with her again. Even if she is the mother of my son." He smiled. "I love you too much."
A sigh of relief. "Thank goodness! I really don't want to loose you."
"I'm just kind of frazzled right now," Barrel went on. "Emotionally distraut. What am I going to do? I have Alex, the son I never knew I had. Rachael, the woman I once loved whom I never quite seemed to let go."
"What does your heart tell you to do?" came the reply.
He was silent for a second. "Well, the mina thing it wants to do is to get to know Alex better. Make him know that I love him. And it wants to move on after having loved Rachael."
"Well then," he went on, I think you should do just that. Make Alex a part of your life." A pause. "As for Rachael, tell her that your status as a former couple is just that; former."
He nodded, understanding. "Yeah...hey, thanks Julius. You're always there when I need you the most."
A little smile. "Barrel, I love you, of course I am. Whenever you need me, I'll be here."

Barrel found Alex's number from the operator a while later and gave him a call. "Hello?" came the voice as the reciever was picked up.
"Alex?" he said. "It's your father. Listen, I'm gonna swing on by your place and pick you up. We're going out for dinner tonight."
"Really? Great, what should I wear?"
"What you were wearing before is fine, nice and casual. You're going to love this place, I'm telling you. I'll be around in half an hour."
Alex smiled into the reciever. "Can't wait."

Barrel showed up exactly as promised, not a moment late. Alex gave a small nod as he hopped into the backseat of the car, smiling at his father and the other man in the front seat.
"Hey there," he said.
"Howdy, son," came the reply. "Alex, I don't think you've had the pleasure of meeting Julius. I've told you about him, right?"
"Oh yes," he replied, refering to the fact that his father was gay. He and the man shook hands. "Glad to meet you."
"So you're the fabled son," Julius smiled. "Heard a lot about you already."
"Good things, I hope."
"Not a word of badness in any of it."
A sigh of relief. "Phew." Laughter.
"So where're we off to?" Alex asked.
"Not telling that much,' his father replied. "You'll have to wait and see."
"Wah," he pouted. "I'm no good at waiting."
"Well, you're going to have to. But you'll love it when we finally get there..."

Fifteen minutes later, the little car pulled up in front of a huge set of gates. Large and cast-iron, the jack-o-lantern symbol of the Pumpkin King on the front. Piling out of the car, Alex could only stare.
"This is..." he stuttered. "We're at...."
"The Skellington mansion," Barrel replied. "Yes, I know. For supper." No reply as the lad stood there, dumbfounded. "Look, it's really not that big of a deal. I grew up here, you know."
"Yeah, but it's a different story for one whose never so much as seen Jack or any of you people in person. Just having you for a father is enough! Now we're meeting Jack and Sally! Wow."
He chuckled, taking Julius' arm. "I guess so. Come on, then, up we go." He opened the main gates, leading them up a long set of stairs. Upon reaching the front door Barrel reached for the knob, letting them all inside.
Inside, it actually appeared quite simple. The room they were in now was located just off the kitchen, a small boot room. After pulling of their shoes they headed inside, past the kitchen and on towards the living room.
"Anyone home?" called the Prince.
"In here," came a voice. The sounds of laughter could be heard, as if there were a bunch of people in there having a good time. Barrel gave his son a friendly nudge as they walked into the room. Alex could scarcely believe his eyes. Here was the Royal family, the people he had so admired as a child. Shock, almighty Queen of Halloweentown, his aunt. She sat besides her husband, Ira, their son Drake in her arms. On the floor, her daughter Alisa (of a previous marriage) sat playing dolls. To their right was Lock, his uncle, and his wife Elizabeth. Lock held in his arms a little baby girl, whom he knew as Laurella.
Continuing on sat Kyrene, Jack and Sally's only biological child. The spitting image of her parents she sat in the embrace of her love, Jacob. Both were quite shy at first, but apparantly were extremely talkative once you got to know them.
In a rocking chair sat Sally, former Pumpkin Queen, life-long love of her husband Jack. And her hand was enclosed in that of Jack himself, the aged King, once almighty ruler of all Halloween Town. The master of fright, a demon of horrific proportions, as they had been taught in school. Nobody since him had been able to scare a human quite the same. Not even his daughter the queen. They all sat talking and laughing amongst each other, the love seat having been saved for Barrel and Julius.
"Hey there, little bro," Shock smiled at him. "Come on in."
"Who's your friend?" asked Lock.
"The one cowering behind me?" Barrel frowned as he pulled Alex forward. "Alex Ghostly. My son."
The room fell into silence as they all stared at this newest addition to their family. All except for Jack, who struggled to his feet and headed over towards them.
"Alex, yes, my son has already told me about you. Allow me to introduce myself. Jack Skellington, your grandfather. But please, just call me grampa. Make me feel special."
A grin. "Thanks, grampa. Lovely to meet you."
"Same here. Come, take a seat, I brought in an extra chair. Put it beside your father's seat." Alex, Barrel, and Julius each took their spots.
"Well, this is quite new," Kyrene said. "Alex, who's your mother?"
"Rachael," Barrel said for him. "Rachael Ghostly." He patted his son on the shoulder.
"Fascinating, isn't it? Never knew I had a son. Rachael never told me, you see, never did. I still love him though."
"How wonderful," Sally smiled. "Congratulations the both of you, for having found each other."
"Thanks a lot," Alex replied. "Gee, I feel like I'm at home already here, you're all being so nice."
"They do that to you," Ira piped. "First they try to make you feel at home and then WHAM! They'll stab you in the back for no reason at all. I'm telling you, these Skellingtons are viscious."
"Oh, shut up," his wife chuckled. "We're not that bad, are we?"
"Not really," he admitted. "But close!"
Laughs. "Thanks, love."
"Not a problem, sweet."
"But really," Shock went on, "It's nice to have you with us."
A little nod. "And it's great to be here."

Supper that evening was held in the grand dining room, a huge and very elaborate meal. Alex felt as if he were in heaven as he dined, laughing and joking with his newfound family. He had made a lovely transition, and any stiffness between them all had already been dissolved.
It was around 8:00 when Barrel asked to be excused, heading out to stand upon the patio by himself.
Alex couldn't help but stare at him, standing out there like that. Julius noticed this as well, heading out to talk to his love. Barrel just shook his head sadly as the other man spoke to him, mouthing some words. Frowning, Julius kissed Barrel gently, leaving once more. Alex just watched the image of his forlorn father, sighing inwardly.
"Go talk to him," came a voice from behind him. He spun around, to see Shock.
"Oh hey there," he said. "Think I should?"
"I know you should," she replied. "He's kind of upset right now, you can tell all of this is getting to him. Making him depressed. And when he gets like that, all he really needs to do it is talk to someone." She smiled. "Trust me, I know. I'm the first one he came to when he was coming out of the closet, you know, we share a really close bond." The touched his shoulder gently. "But right now, I think it's your turn to comfort him."
He stood up. "You're right, Aunt Shock. I'm going out there."
She nodded. "Good man."
Without waiting he headed towards the patio doors, opening one of the quietly before stepping outside. There stood Barrel, gazing up silently at the night sky.
"Dad?" he asked. "Talk to me."
Barrel spun around, smiling gently. Alex could see the lines of age already forming around his eyes as he did this.
"Hello, son.," he replied, turning once again as the lad joined him. "Lovely evening, isn't it?"
"What's wrong?" Alex asked immediately. "You can trust me. I'm your son."
A sigh. "I don't know. It's just..I've missed so much of your life. I feel so guilty...you must hate me."
"Guilty? What for? Look, you've got no reason to feel guilty. It wasn't your choice, it was mother's. I don't blame you for anything. I don't blame either of you. I love you both a lot, I always will. I finally have both a mom and a dad."
"But not a normal childhood," came the reply.
"Who's who to say what's normal? Normal could be anything. I had a fine childhood, I never once felt any grudges against either you or mom." A smile. "Look, dad, cheer up. Don't do this to yourself, it's doing no good. Besides, what kind of a role model is it making you look like?"
A hearty laugh. "Indeed. Well, I guess you're right. I'm not to blame for not being there. But I'm going to make it up to you, Alex."
He nodded. "Fine. Just don't make me talk to you like this ever again."
"Alright." They shared in a brief hug, before Barrel pulled back just a little. "You know, I just thought of something."
"What's that?"
"I want to change your name, to Skellington I mean. So you'll really be part of the family. I kind of owe it to you at the least."
"Really? I don't know what mom'd say..."
"I'll talk to her about that," he replied. "Don't worry about her. But I'd love that, you as a Skellington. Truly my son. Alex Skellington, imagine. Your family line shall always have a place in town history, you'll have your own place in the family tree and all."
"Tempting offer," he said as he scratched his chin. "Well, I'm all for it. I just think we ought to both talk to mom about it."
He nodded. "Very well, we can both do that. Tommorrow."
"Yes, perfect." A laugh. "Oh, this is so pefect! Thanks, dad."
A smile. "No problem, son."

Rachael wasn't sure how to react when Alex and Barrel confronted her about the change. She sat back in her easy chair, making a steeple with her forefingers. "I don't know," she admitted. "I really don't know. You only met a day ago, and now all this? I just don't know..."
Alex sat beside his mother. "Mom, please, I really want to do this. But I won't do it without knowing I have your blessing to."
"You want my blessing? Tell me why you want to switch."
He took her hand. "Because I feel that I've lost a lot between me and dad," he admitted. "I want to make up for it, let myself and everyone else know who I am. Declare to them all, 'look at me, I'm Alex Skellington! Son of Barrel Skellington!'. To possibly provide a better future for my family, for Janine. That's why."
She nodded, understanding where he was coming from. "But I don't have to, you know. I raised you. I could deny you this priviledge."
"But you wouldn't," he fired.
She was surprised by his boldness, while Barrel grew impressed. The lad had the old Skellington blood in him. "And why not?" she asked.
"Cause you love me too much. And you owe it to me for not letting me have a proper father, for denying me that right."
Silence for a few moments. "Son, how upset would you be if I said no?"
"Extremely. I might never say a word about it again, but I don't think I'd ever forgive you."
A sigh. "I thought so. You certainly have the attitude in you. Very well then, I'll let you do it. You have my permission."
"Oh, thank you!" he cried, flinging his arms around her neck. "I love you!"
"I know," she smiled as he released her. Barrel gave her a hug now.
"Thanks, Rachael," he told her. "We both appreciate this..."
"I guess you deserve it. You've missed this much time together, who am I to take away the rest of your lives?"
He nodded as he glanced back at Alex. "Listen son, why don't you go see your sweetheart now or something? I need a word with your mother."
A nod. "Oh, sure. See you two later."
"So long, boy," Barrel replied, waving as he left. He then turned back to Rachael, sitting upon the sofa as he glanced at her. "Thanks Rachael," he told her at last. "For being so open to all of this I mean."
A smile. "No problem."
"You're not upset with my stepping into his life so suddenly?"
"No, certainly not. In fact I encourage it. you ought to get to know him as good as you can; he's a great boy."
He smiled as he stood up, giving her another hug. "You're the best," he grinned.
She shrugged as he sat back down. "I know it."
"A little conceited, but hey, that's a good thing."
A nod. "Exactly, self-confidence."
"Sure thing," he chuckled. "Sure thing."

Barrel rung up the mayor later on that day, to have the neccessary name-changing documents drawn up. After that he hopped down to Alex's, where his son let him in.
"Hey pop," he smiled. "Just doing some ironing, come on in."
"Thanks," he replied. "Mustn't stay long, I just wanted to let you know that the documents are being drawn up, we'll be able to sign them tommorrow."
"What? No court or nothing?"
A little shrug. "When your sister is the queen, things have a way of working a whole lot more efficiently. Kind of shameful, yeah, but useful sometimes."
He laughed. "I see. Well, I was just doing some ironing, why don't you come watch."
"No, I should be going..."
"Come on, don't be a wuss. We can talk."
"Well, I guess so. For a while." He followed Alex to the bedroom, where he was ironing. Barrel took at seat at a small wooden desk, watching as his son worked.
"Just fixing up my police uniform," he said. "Gotta go back to work tommorrow. I've had the past few days off, paid leave. Captain wants me back tommorrow though."
"Really? Oh well. I'd like to see you in your uniform sometime."
"Well, drop by the station tommorrow, ask to see me."
"Hmm, I can just as easily bring the documents with me as well then. Have you sign it at the same time, kill two birds with one stone. There won't be much to it after that, get Shock to sign it is all."
"And that shouldn't be too hard."
"Hopefully," he chuckled. "Well, I must be off now, my son, I've got a zillion things to do this afternoon. Besides that, Julius and myself had plans to go out this evening."
A nod. "Alright then. Don't forget, tommorrow. Alright?"
He smiled. "Of course. Wouldn't miss it for the world."

It was around 2:00 when Barrel got a chance to head down to the station. First of all he had to get the papers, sort out some minor legal details, other trivial things. Upon mentioning to Shock that he was going to be leaving Town Hall, she insisted upon going with him.
"So we can do it all in one shot," she smiled. "These folks are fine without me for a while, the mayor's got hold of it. Come on, let's go."
"You don't mind?"
"Certainly not, I insist upon it! Now come on."
He just laughed. "Yes, your majesty."

Alex certainly got a surprise when he saw both his father and Shock coming towards his desk. Indeed, the sight managed to catch a few eyes...actually more like every eye in the room. Many had heard by now from rumors of his royal relations. Now they had proof.
"Hey there, son," Barrel smiled. "Told ya I'd be here."
"Brought company," Alex grinned. "Hey there, Shock."
She tweeked his nose. "Aunt Shock to you."
He laughed. "Aunt, sorry. Now, where's the papers, old man?"
Barrel raised a brow. "Watch your tongue, or forget ever being related."
A pout. "What is this, beat on Alex day?"
"Yep, just created it," Shock smiled. "Like it?"
"Love it."
Barrel just chuckled at this, laying a brown manilla folder on the desk and pulling out a number of papers. "I've already signed, boy. Now it's your turn."
A nod as he acepted the papers, grabbing a pen and signed the dotted lines. It barely took a moment. "And now," Shock declared, "it's my turn." Taking the pen she sat down at the desk, cracking her knuckles. Then she lowered the pen to paper, placing on it the almighty signature of the queen; it was now officially legal.
Alex let out a little laugh as he took the papers from his aunt. "Wow," he breathed. "I can't believe it. I'm now Alex Skellington. My aunt the queen just made it so. I'm sorry, I'm never going to get used to this."
"You'd better," she replied. "You're royalty now, you know. A prince."
"Holy shit..." he muttered. "This is too weird."
"Detective Ghostly!" came a voice suddenly. Everyone looked up, to see a large and overweight cop standing there munching a doughnut.
"Not anymore, McCreep." he chuckled. "It's Skellington now. Just made it legal."
A wide-eyed stare. "What the hell, since when are you friggin' royalty..." He stopped upon seeing Barrel and Shock. "Oh, Queen Shock, Prince Barrel..." he cried. "I didn't see you there. I'm afraid I don't understand what's going on."
A nod from the queen. "Don't worry about it, allow me to briefly summarize it for you. My nephew here, the son of my brother, Barrel, has just been legally changed his last name to that of his father."
"Barrel...his father? Pretty neat, Gho....Skellington," he corrected himself. "The captain know yet?"
He shook his head. "Nope, few do. They'll learn about it later. Janine does, of course..."
"She fine with it?"
"Oh yeah."
A nod. "Well, must be going now. I was going to ask you something, but I totally forgot. Oh well, see you later."
"So long, Detective Ghostly." The oversized cop hurried off.
"Friend of yours?" asked his father.
"Yep," he replied. "By the way, Janine really wants to meet you. Said we should get together some night for supper."
"A good idea," Barrel nodded. "Well, tommorrow's good with me."
"What about Julius? Seven fine with him?"
He raised an eyebrow. "She knows that I'm..."
"Yeah, she does. I told her, she doesn't mind."
A smile. "Good. Cause you know, if he weren't welcome to come, then I wouldn't come either."
"Really? That's actually kinda sweet."
"Thanks, kid. Now, you'd better get back to work, Detective Skellington. See you tommorrow at 7."

Alex opened his door to his father and Julius at exactly 7:00 the following evening. Both were in their fanciest getup, black tuxedos with tophats and canes. Even had capes to boot. Alex scratched his head, having put on simple black pants and a sweater. "Wow, you're really done up," he said as he let them in.
A laugh from his father. "Yeah, we don't get to wear these outfits very often. Last time I wore this was for your Aunt Shock's wedding around a year ago. That's way too long for me."
"Well, you look good. Both of you."
Julius gave a little shrug. "We know already, but thanks."
Alex just chuckled, showing them into the living room and allowing them to sit beside each other on the loveseat. "Anyways you guys, I'm going to go help Janine out in the kitchen, see how she's doing, alright? I can trust you here for a second?"
A demonic grin from Barrel. "Of course, son, always."
"Great, be right back." He zipped off. The prince meerly say sat back in his seat, taking off his hat and tossing it into the sofa opposite him.
"What's wrong?" Julius asked, reading his emotions.
He shrugged. "I dunno. I hope he's not intimated by the fact that I'm gay. Geez, I don't want him to be."
"Listen, don't worry about it," Julius smiled, touching his shoulder gently. "He's your kid; if he's anything at all like you, he won't give a damn."
"Think so?"
"I know so. Just don't trouble yourself over it, okay? I hate to see you so uptight."
A nervous grin. "Thanks, Julius. It means a lot to me that you're sticking by me through all this...it's really nerve-racking, you know."
He nodded. "I know."
"But at the same time he must know that I am not simply teasing him; I am gay, and I want him to realize it. It's not a game. It's a way of life."
With a little smile Julius kissed Barrel tenderly, wrapping his arms around him. He was still smiling when he released him, hands on his love's shoulders.
"My dearest Barrel," he sighed. "I love you."
"I love you too, Julius." They shared in another kiss, Barrel with one hand in Julius' jet black hair and the other around his waist. Neither saw Alex step into the room, grow bright-red in the face, and step back out again.

Alex returned a few minutes later, when all was back to normal (except for the fact that Barrel and Julius were holding hands, but he didn't care about any of that). He nodded to his father and Julius.
"Care to join us for supper now?" he asked.
A nod from Barrel. "We'd be delighted." Rising he released his hold on his love, thinking about whatever this Janine girl might think of it.
"She won't mind," Alex immediately said, as if reading his thoughts.
"Do you?" Barrel asked.
He shook his head. "Certainly not. No, I don't."
"You'd better not be lying to me..."
"I'm not," he laughed. "Now hurry up, the food's getting cold." He led them into a plain little dining room, seating them both on one side of a elegant hardwood table. The food had already been laid out; Stuffed bats with tarantula venom, with just a hint of snake sauce on the side. Barrel sniffed at the heavenly scent coming from the plate.
"Smells great," he sighed.
"Sorry to keep you waiting..." came another voice, that of a woman. Out of common curtesy
Barrel and Julius rose from their seats, to shake the hand of their hostess. She was short and petite, a small-framed brunette with piercing blue eyes. She smiled at the prince and his companion, allowing each to kiss her upon the hand gently.
"A pleasure," smiled Julius.
"So glad to be here," remarked Barrel.
She was delighted as they took their seats once again, taking a place beside Alex on the opposite side of the table. "A wonderful first impression," she commented.
"Dear, allow me to introduce you," declared Alex Skellington. "This man opposite you, this is Julius Thornton. And this other charming fellow over here, this is my father. Dad, Julius, this is Janine." They all shook hands, exchanging greetings.
"A pleasure meeting you both," she smiled.
"I've heard much about you," Barrel told her. "Alex raves about you." Her cheeks went red, while the men laughed.
"Enough of that," she said. "Lets eat!"
"Good idea," boomed Julius, picking up his fork and digging in. He let out a satisfactory "mmmm!" upon tasting it. "Great!" he mumbled.
"Don't talk with your mouth full," Barrel reminded him as he took a bite of his own. "Though it may be good, you must remember to use your manners."
"Yes, mother."
"Oh, shut up."
Alex just chuckled. "Well, glad to know you're enjoying it."
"The most we can manage to cook is canned rat legs!" Barrel cracked. "Sorry, son, but your father is incompetent!"
"Don't worry, he is as well," Janine smiled.
A little frown. "What did I ever do to deserve this? Everyone's beating on me!"
"No-one's beating on you," Julius chuckled. "We're laughing at you."
"Oh, well that's much better, thanks."
"No problem."
"Really though," Barrel said straight-faced. "This is superb. Almost as good as Jack's cooking himself!"
"Jack can cook?" Alex asked, curious.
His dad nodded. "Ay, he sure can. Why, when I was just a young kid, he would whip up these wonderful gourmet meals for us all. He loved doing it! He often said that if he weren't the King, he'd have been a cook. And he's still a master at it, although these days he doesn't like to be going around the kitchen anymore. He's getting old, you know, he's no longer the young skeleton he used to be."
"I can just see him," Janine said. "A spry young man, dancing about through the human world as he terrified any poor mortal who dared cross his path."
"That's pretty much the way it was," Barrel sighed. "Me and my siblings always admired him. We were adopted by him, you see..." Alex and Janine both nodded, indicating they knew the tale already. Everyone did. "Well, we couldn't help from admiring him, even after he took us in. Jack Skellington, the almighty Pumpkin King of Halloween Town. Son of Robert Skellington, a legend forevermore. The Skellington name in itself is one of glory, I think. I wasn't always who I am now, neither myself, Lock, nor Shock were. Renegades, born rebels. It's Jack and his wife Sally who saved us. And even though biologically they aren't my parents, I still call them mom and dad. Cause they raised me, made me who I am. And that's what matters to me."
Alex nodded, eating. "You love them as if they were your own parents," he said.
"Exactly. Quick learner, boy."
Janine smiled at her love. "He always was."
Barrel glanced at his son. "Now, tell me a bit more about how you two got together. Tell your old man."
"Nosy, aren't you?" Alex laughed. "Well, we met in a club. She was with a friend of hers, of whom I knew. So I went over to see this other girl, and that's when I found Janine. That was about 2 years ago."
"Lovely," came the reply. "Isn't it, Julius?"
Julius, who had been stuffing his face, glanced up. "Oh, uh, what? I kind of lost track there..."
"You're still a teenager at heart," Barrel laughed, lightly touching his knee under the table.
"And what's that supposed to mean?"
A chuckle from the newest member of the Skellington clan. "You two crack me up," he laughed. "You really do."
Julius smiled, shrugging. "Yeah, regular two-man comedy act. Think we'd make Vegas?"
"Doubt it," came the reply. "I very much doubt it."

They had a wonderful evening together. Janine enjoyed meeting her love's father, and Barrel in turn enjoyed meeting his son's girlfriend and possibly future wife. But the person who had the best time of all was undoubtably Alex himself, who simply loved to have his dad there with him for supper. It was something he couldn't help but marvel over.
Barrel and Julius left at around 11, heading home after giving their hosts their warmest thanks of apprecation. A sigh came from Barrel as he gazed at the stars. "Isn't it great?" he asked. "That I have a son? That he bears my name, that we've finally been brought together after all these years?"
"Indeed," he replied. "And you know what else is wonderful? Seeing you so happy. It's been a long time."
"Has it? I guess so. But I'm so pleased..."
A little smile. "So am I, actually. I am as well."

It was 2 AM, and Barrel was still up, seated at the living room window and gazing outdoors. He sighed as he watched the cars passing by, late night party comers and go-ers. Teenagers with simple lives, nothing better to do then get themselves drunk. Why was it that things got so much harder when you got older? Or was he just upset because of everything happening lately? This was all exceedingly rough on him still. What would he do now that he knew of Alex? How would he make up for the years he had missed? He shook his head, glancing at his relection in the mirror. He could just make out the fine lines in the corners of his eyes, that crinkled up whenever he smiled. Despite having a youthful face, he was still getting older.
A bitter frown as he turned his head, glancing at the phone. After thinking for a few moments he picked up the receiver, dialing a number. It rang once, twice, three times before it picked up.
"What?" asked Shock sleepily.
"Hey," he started immediately. "It's Barrel. Do you remember that time a while back when you called me at around 3 AM just to talk about some things that had been bugging you?"
A sigh. "Yeah, what about it?"
"Well, you said that I could do the same thing to you at any time, remember?"
She chuckled, despite how sleepy she was. "Guess it's payback time, eh?"
"Yep."
She yawned. "Alright. What's bugging ya. Is it Alex?"
"Well, and that. Of course that."
"I think you should relax. Live it up, eh?"
"Yeah, I know all that much. I don't really think there's much else you can say about him, it's just something I've gotta cope with. But I'm bummed about something different this time."
"What?"
"Aging. Getting old. I mean, I have an adult son now, it's just dawned on me that I'm not as young as I once was."
"Barrel, I'm not exactly the teenager I used to be, but I'm no cripple either."
"Yeah, but Shock you don't get it. I've realized by now that I'm not gonna be around forever! And I really don't wanna die, I've too much left to do!"
"Who said you were gonna die?" she asked. "Look, you've got a long time left until that happens, luv. Until then, you midas well live it up. Seize the day, do all the wild and crazy things you forgot to do as a teenager."
"Which isn't much," he laughed.
"Well, ya see? You've already done quite a lot. Now you can go have some more fun! You, Julius, and Alex together."
He gave a little nod into the reciever. "Yeah...yeah, Shock, you're totally right. 100 percent. Hey, thanks, I feel like a new man."
"That's great, bud. Now can I go back to sleep?"
"Sure. Night, sis."
"Night, little bro. See you tommorrow." The line went dead, and he placed the phone back into its holder. Shock was absolutely correct. He still had so much to live for, so much to do. No more sulking around; he was going to make the most out of his life.

He went straight to bed after that, waking up at around 8 the next morning. After yawning heavily he jumped quickly out of bed, tossing on his clothes and grabbing a bowl of cereal. After quickly consuming this he headed back into the bedroom, shaking the sleeping Julius.
"Hey!" he said. "Wake up!"
A little groan. "Go away, it's so early..."
He just laughed mercilessly as he hauled the sheets off the bed. "Come on, up and at em. We've got a big day, now hurry!"
"Great," came a sigh. "Just great."
"Come on, none of that. Now, you go freshen up while I get you some food."
A yawn. "Yeah, sure. Whatever."
"Great, see ya in a minute."
"Whatever."

Julius stumbled out of the bathrom a half hour later, dressed and washed. He smiled at Barrel before sitting down at his plate of rat tails and eggs.
"So what's the deal?" he asked. "What's so special about today?"
"We're going to go on a scaring expedition," came the reply. "Travel to the human world for a couple of days and just scare people."
Excited applause. "Barrel, that's a wonderful idea! What a genius you are. Have you told your family that we're going yet?"
"No, I'll call them. You know, I wonder if my son would be interested in going. Some time to connect with each other, you know. Think he'd spring for the idea?"
"I dunno, ask him. Well, we should pack some stuff to bring I suppose...what about when we're not scaring, when it's time to sleep?"
"Ah, we'll just pose as mortals for then in order to get into some motel somewhere, don't worry about it. We should only be around 2 or 3 days, so pack lightly. Whatever you can fit into a bookbag."
"Right." He swallowed some of his water. "Gee, this sounds great. You'd best get on the phone, though. So people won't get all concerned when we leave."
"Of coruse, I'll get on that now."

Jack and Sally woke up to the sound of the phone ringing beside them. Sleepily the former King picked up the reciever.
"Hello?" he muttered.
"Dad!" came an excited voice. "It's Barrel, sorry for waking you."
"Don't worry about it. What's up?"
"Oh, not much. Just letting you know that me and Julius are gonna be off on vacation for a few days. We're going on a scaring trip to the human world, possibly Alex as well if he accepts."
"Oh, really? That's a great idea, you deserve a nice rest. How long will you be gone?"
"Oh, 2 or 3 days max. We won't be that long."
"Great. Well, have a good time then."
"Of course. Thanks, pop."
He just smiled. "No prob. See you when you get home."

The next people he called were Shock and Ira. They had just been lying awake in bed though, so he didn't wake them. Ira picked up the phone.
"Hello?" he asked.
"Ira, it's Barrel, how ya doing?"
"Oh hey there, just great. What's up?"
"I wanted to talk to my sister for a second, is she there?"
"Yeah, sure. Hold on a second." He passed the phone off to his wife, who was cuddled into his chest. "Barrel," he whispered to her. A nod as she lifted the receiver to her ear. "Hey little bro, what's up?"
"Lots. I was thinking about what you said last night, and I'm doing something about it. Me and Julius are going on vacation."
"Oh, really? That's wonderful, where to?"
"A scaring trip. It's going to be a blast, Alex might be coming as well."
"Well, that's great. Have a good time."
"I will, thanks. Gotta go now, see you when I get home."
"Right. See ya, bro."
"Ciao, sis."
The line went dead as Shock had her husband hand up the phone. "What was that all about?" he asked as she snuggled back into him.
"Barrel and Julius are going on vacation," she said. "Possibly Alex as well."
"Yeah? That's great, they all deserve it. This whole 'son' thing has really been getting to Barrel, I know."
"Yeah, and to Julius as well. He can't stand it when my brother gets depressed, it makes him feel the same way."
"And I bet Alex hasn't been exactly on top of the world either."
"I know he hasn't. Well, that's lovely then. I hope they have a great time."
"Me too." Ira kissed his queen's hair, returning to stare at the ceiling. "You know, I don't ever want to get up from here. Of course pretty soon the kids are gonna start bawling, so we'll have to."
"Let's enjoy this while we can then."
Suddenly, from the other room....
"MOMMY!!!! I WANNA GET UP NOW!!!!"
They sighed simultaneously. "Well, so much for that," Shock said.

The final person to be awoken was Alex. The phone rang noisily, waking both him and Janine (who had spent the night). "Whoever you are, I am extremely pissed off at you," he grumbled.
"I guess you're not interested in my offer," came a familiar laugh.
"Oh, dad," he said. "Sorry, thought you might have been the Captain trying to get me to come in to work today. Today's not my day though, so you know...."
"Of course."
"Well, what did you want to ask me?"
"Me and Julius both, actually. We were heading off on a 2 or 3 day trip me and him, to the human world. Do some scaring, go sight-seeing, you know. Would you like to come?"
"Really? Gee, I dunno, I've got work and Janine and...."
"You can take an hour to think about it if you want," came the reply. "You know, make a choice or whatever. Cause if you don't want to, then that's alright."
"Yeah, I think I'll do that. Thanks."
"Sure. Call me in an hour, around 10:30."
"Right. Bye." He hung up the phone, letting out a sigh.
"Your dad?" asked Janine sleepily.
"Yeah. He was wondering if I might like to come with him and Julius on a little 'vacation', that's what he called it. I don't know though..."
She just rolled over to face him, kissing him gently before tracing an invisible line down his bare chest with a finger. "Well, what's stopping you? I think it's a great idea."
"Really?"
"Yeah, I do. It'd be a chance for father and son to get to know each other. Perhaps also to get to know Julius a bit. I really think you ought to, dear."
"Yeah, but what about the Captain..."
She smiled at him. "Don't worry about him. Now that he knows of your connections to the Skellingtons and that you've adopted the name, I don't think he'll be on your case as hard. Afraid of what Shock or Barrel would say; wouldn't want to offend the royal family, after all. And seeing as how you're one of them now..."
"Yeah, I guess so," he agreed. "But what about you? Would you mind? Cause I really want to, but if it means that much to you I'll stay here in Halloween Town."
"That's sweet, Alex," she told him. "But no, I want you to go. I'm telling you to go."
A laugh. "Oh really now? I'm beaten then. I should give the old Captain a call then, let him know. Dad wanted my word by 10:30..."
"Good idea. As for me, I'm going to dress." A final kiss. "See you in a bit."
"Yep."

Alex made the neccessary arrangements for the days he'd be gone from work and then called his father to let him know that he'd be there. "Great," Barrel had said. "We'll come by your place at around 11." And so it had been agreed. They'd escort Janine back home and then head off on their expedition.
Alex and Jainine were in the middle of breakfast when he jumped up from his seat. "Shit, forgot to call mother," he said. "And it's nearly 11 by now, better hurry." Downing the last of his cereal he grabbed up the phone, dialing his mother's number. She picked up after 2 rings.
"Hello?" came her usual chipper voice.
"Hey mom, it's me," he tpold her, proceeding to describe the situation and what was happening.
"Well, that's lovely," she immediately said. "Your father always was one for a bit of fun. Have fun, Alex, scare 'em good!"
"Thanks mom, see ya when I get home."
"So long, son."
He replaced the recieiver, smiling. "There, all ready. Bookbag packed and the works."
"Bring any food with you?" Janine asked. "In case you get hungry?"
"Yep, thought of all that. I'm all ready to go."
"Wonderful then." It was at that instant when the doorbell rang. "That's them!" he cried. "I'll get it!"
He opened the door to find exactly who had wanted to see.
"Hey there, son," Barrel smiled, his arm entertwined with Julius'. "Ready?"
"Yep. Janine, ready?"
"Sure," she replied as she came out from the kitchen with his backpack. "Forgot this, love."
"Ah, thank you." He pulled it on before finding his shoes and quickly slipping his feet inside of them. He and his girlfriend were prepared in less then a minute and the four of them step outside.
"I only live along the way here," Janine told Barrel and Julius. "Couple of houses down. There, the black and red one."
"I see," came the reply from the prince. "Very charming."
"Thanks. I grew up here, actually. My folks eventually left when I was planning on moving myself as a teen, so I just kept the place. It's cozy." The stood now outside her front gate.
"Here we are," Alex said. "I'll walk you to the front door, dear."
"Thanks." They slipped by the gate, leaving Barrel and Julius to watch. The former simply smiled.
"Remember those days?" the former asked. "The early part of our relationship, walking each other to the door and such?"
"Sure do," came the answer. "Seems a long time ago." Silence for a second as the two watched Alex and his partner. She mouthed a few words to him, and he mouthed a couple back. He then kissed her and gave her a hug, before she slipped into the house. He came back then, smiling at his companions.
"Ready, men?" he asked.
"Indeed," his father replied. "On we go." They headed on their merry way, the three of them walking in a line. "Lovely day," said Barrel. "I hope Janine doesn't mind you joining us..."
"Not at all," came the answer. "In fact she strongly encouraged it. Said it was good 'bonding time'."
"I'm glad then, I was afraid she might be upset with me. but yes, it's a great chance for us all to just relax after this hectic week. I need it a lot."
"How long have you two been seeing each other again?" Julius questioned.
"Around two years," came the answer.
"Were you thinking about moving in with each other?"
He shrugged slightly. "I dunno, we were at one point but the topic got lost somewhere. You two did, what's it like?"
Barrel smiled. "Wonderful. No more having to call each other up, you've always got someone to talk to, plus it's much better then being alone."
"Plus the other gets to help with the rent." Laughs. "But really, it's great."
"Think we should then? Me and Janine?"
"Sure," Barrel replied encouragingly. "I really do." They were walking through downtown Halloween now, towards the main gates. "You can ask her. If she wants to, she'll say yes. And if she doesn't, then she'll let you know. i promise you, she will. Women are very good at voicing their opinion." More laughter.
"Yeah, I'll do that." They were just passing by a news stand when Alex immediately stopped.
"Holy crap..." he whispered upon seeing the title of that day's Halloween Weekly. BARREL SKELLINGTON'S ILLEGITIMATE CHILD, it read. "What the hell, what's going on..."
"The tabloids," his father smiled. "Don't worry about them. Now that you've taken on the family name, you'll be extremely well known around Halloween. Especially at first, being the unknown son of a prince. People will be coming up to ya asking for an autograph or this and that or something else..."
"Yeah, but I've never been in the paper before. And especially not for something as private as this."
Barrel just frowned, pulling out a dollar and buying a copy of that day's paper. He then led his two companions to sit on a nearby bench. "Look," he said, "it really doesn't matter. They'll do this to you. They'll dig around and find all kinds of dirt on you. Like when I came out of the closet, they were on top of that in an instant. I still receive hate mail because of that, can you believe that? It's nothing though."
"Aren't you curious though? As to what they wrote, I mean?"
"Yeah, of course I am. Why else would I have bought a copy of the paper? Now, let's take a look at it." He began to read aloud:

"The Halloween Weekly has learned recently of a strange thing happening with Barrel Skellington, Prince of Halloween. Apparantly Barrel, who came out of the closet sometime last year, father an illegitimate son. Some details are known about the situation. Around 100 years ago apparantly Mr. Skellington had an affair with a local woman, Rachael Ghostly. Seemingly she never spoke to the father of the child's birth, not wanting to 'create a fuss', as she was overheard saying yesterday to an unidentified person. ("Eavedsroppers", muttered Alex). Sources have confirmed for us the identity of the Prince's child; Alex Ghostly, a local police officer. It has also been told that Alex has already changed his name to Skellington, at his father's request. The legal changes have seemingly already been made, but the Halloween Weekly will keep you posted."
Barrel just chuckled. "Tabloids, I hate them so much." He then stood up, tossing the paper into a garbage can. "But who cares? We were off on a scaring expedition, weren't we?"
"So we were!" cried Julius cheerfully. "Tally-ho!"
"Indeed," Alex smiled. "Let's get going! And no stupid newspaper is gonna stop me."

Lock, Shock, and Kyrene meanwhile stood in Town Hall, all peering at the article. Lock tsk-tsked.
"I don't understand why they can't just leave us alone," he muttered. "Our entire family. And now that they've found out that Barrel's gay, they're simply searching for stuff to hit him with."
"Indeed," Kyrene said. "But at last he's gone out of town now, both him and Alex. They'll miss the worst of the shit."
"Hopefully," frowned the Queen. "I guess that's what we all get for being 'royalty' though. Lots of publicity. I mean, they did a poll once on who the most favourite Skellington was."
"Really?" laughed Kyrene. "Who won?"
"Jack, of course."
Lock simply laughed. "Ridiculous. They're always doing these stories on the 'Royal family' and stuff, it's sad. But I feel quite safe from their cameras and stuff here in Town Hall."
"Yeah, only cause Jack had to put all kinds of laws on this place to keep them out," she replied. "Now only certain people are allowed to work in here, and they have to be appointed by me. They must work a minimum of days and hours, and there are absolutely no cameras allowed."
"Sad," Kyrene sniffed. "I remember when we were just a simple little town where people could come and go as they pleased. It's depressing."
"It is, I know," Shock agreed. "Jack used to have great connections with all his people, he knew everyone in town and everyone was friends with one another. But now that Halloween has grown so large, that's impossible now. And there's more bad seeds now then there ever were, people just aiming to do bad. Myself, Lock, and Barrel used to be the only ones at one point! It's pathetic, really.""But what can yo do?"
Her brother just shrugged. "Nothing, really. We've just gotta live with it." A little laugh. "The people at the press aren't exactly the brightest people in the world, though, eh?" Lock chuckled. "I mean, they didn't catch up to the whole Barrel thing till now, and it was found out Monday."
"That's why everyone hates them," Kyrene laughed. "What is it?" she asked.
"The press, they're going wild," he replied. "They're outside, demanding more on the Barrel case. What do we do?"
A little frown. "Will they never quit? We could have them all charged for this."
"I already threatened them with that, they're still out there though. You have to talk with them, there's nothing else I can do."
She sighed. "I guess so then. Siblings, wanna help?"
"Yeah, we can try," Lock nodded. "Let's go."
Not missing a beat the three headed towards the main doors of Town Hall, followed by the mayor. Throwing open them open they now stood before a sea of photgrahpers and journalists. Cameras immediately began to flash.
"Put away your cameras," Shock ordered. "Bylaw 365, section 7 states that there is to be no flash photography of any kind around Town Hall. And I promise, you shall each be charged if you don't quit." That didn't stop them. "Fine then, you've been warned. "What do you want from us?"
"Your Majesty, what's going on with your brother, Barrel?" asked one man. "And his son, that is?"
"Nothing, what's it matter? I'm not gonna lie, Alex is Barrel's son. He was born around 97 years ago after Barrel and Rachael Ghostly, his former girlfriend, broke up. Rachael didn't realize that she was pregnant until after and decied to leave it quiet so as to not create a large racket. And that's it, what else do you want?"
"Mrs. Skellington, where is your brother now?" called a woman.
"On vacation," she answered. "He, Julius, and Alex are gone, they decided early this morning they'd be going. Total last minute thing, just to get rid of some of the stress that's been facing them these past few days. Now before I send you all away, what more did you want to know?"
"Why all the laws on Town Hall?" questioned one younger man. "Why the secrecy?"
"There's no secrecy," Shock hissed. "It's protection, for the Skellingtons and everyone who is actually interested in working on the holiday. A bunch of photographers is the last thing we need when we're trying to put together Halloween. No secrets, none of that, just something Jack created a while ago before I was queen to protect his family and everyone else here. Because it's quite obvious that this is Halloween Town and we are supposed to be creating a holiday, yet no-one cares! It's up to a very small group of people to put it together, and too many folks out there don't even contribute in any way! They mearly benefit! And it's not fair, to me, my family, the mayor, and the hard-working people here at Town Hall. The people here are tired and they deserve a break. We don't need you folks on our backs."
"Shock, how can you say these things while you're hiding in there away from us?" came a cry. "Hiding? I'm hiding now? I believe I'm doing my job. I'm supposed to be creating a holiday here, and that's what's I'm doing. I can't be the caretaker for the rest of you all the time, I've got a l lot of other things on my plate. Goodness, you're like a bunch of babies competing for my attention! Give it up already, okay? Please. Now that's all the questions I'm going to answer. Please leave the grounds or I shall have you all arrested." That set them going; they knew not to mess around with her when she was this upset. Slowly they began to disapeer, leaving the queen, her siblings, and the mayor by themselves.
"Well, why are we standing around here like ths?" demanded Shock. "We've been dawdling long enough. Everybody back to work; I'm not going to let any of this get us behind."

The trio of men were long gone by now, already at the graveyard. From here they would step into one of the many mausoleums, which would led them to the human world.
"Which one now?" asked Julius. "We could go to Cairo perhaps, see England, Austrailia...."
"How about New York?" said Alex. "See Broadway, go to Central Park, the whole deal. I've actually yet to be there."
"Really?" Barrel exclaimed, wide-eyed with disbelief. "It's a great place, it really is. Well, let's go there then. Julius, what about you?"
"Sounds great. We should enter that mausoleum just up there then. It'll let us off at a graveyard somewhere in one of New Yorks more upclass residential areas."
The prince wrung his hands together, an evil gleam in his eye. "A perfect place to start our scaring. Let's hurry then, time's wasting."
A nod as Julius showed them to the gateway they'd be taking. Carefully he opened the door, stepping inside as he pulled a torch down from the wall. Taking a match he quickly lit it, the light throwing his shadow upon the wall. "Coming?" he asked the others with a smile. Quickly they followed him in, the door closing to automatically behind them.
"Just down this tunnel, Alex." Barrel said as they began walking. "Not too far. Both Julius and myself have been this way many times. It's important though to decide exactly where you're going first, or else you'll never get there."
"Huh? I don't get it."
"You've never learned about to mausoleums and the story behind them?"
"No, never. Not even in school."
"Strange, that is. Well, this is the way Jack told me, the way I'm going to tell you. Nobody exactly knows how Halloween Town was made. According to my father we were never meant to be, the whole thing in itself was some sort of freak accident. That's probably why we don't hold beliefs in gods of any types. But apparantly there are at least a dozen of these tunnels scattered over Halloween Town; not just in the graveyard. All over the place. Now, there are a lot more places in the world obviously then there are tunnels. Which is why a certain spell has been cast over them, by an unknown being. This spell has proven to be unbreakable, and it is definately of the most powerful magic there is. This spell will cause the tunnel to lead you to whichever destination you choose to go to; all you have to do is walk a little ways. But should you not know where you are headed, you will eventually end up in a black void. Nothing exists here, there's nothing for no-one. It takes great power to get free of the void; most who get trapped there never make it out. Since the beginning of time, 150 known beings have been caught. Of course, the numbers are certainly much more then that, these are just the figures we know for sure. But of those 150, only two survived to tell the tale of the black void."
He nodded. "Yes, I see now. So you really want to know what you're up to then?"
"Definately, yes," Julius said.
"Well, I've never travelled much by this route. Today we have so many other ways of getting to the human world...magic, portals, oh so many. Why, anyone can buy the simple powder that will bring you wherever you want upon consuming it. That's the one I alway used."
"Cause you're lazy!" his father joked. "No, don't worry bout it. I always liked this way better, I suppose. Same with your other relatives. We're just stuck in the old ways, I think."
"Always have been," cracked Julus dryly, stopping suddenly. "Hey, here we are."
Startled, Alex looked in front of him to see a large door. It was obviously ancient, strange markings being engraved into it. He smiled, delighted to be through the tunnel. "Great! Let's open 'er up then!" Then without waiting he grabbed the handle of the door, moving to push it open. It stayed shut. "What the fuck..." he muttered, tugging a bit harder. "It won't give. Hey, what's up with this?"
"It's not working?" Julius asked with some concern. "Let me try." Alex moved aside, letting the other man give it a shot. He heaved with all his might, throwing his body weight against it, yet it never budged. "Shit. We came all this way and we're trapped. What a waste of time, I could still be sleeping...."
A gentle smile from Barrel. "Here, let me help." Then stepping forward he grasped hold of the handle, pulling it towards him. The door opened silently as Alex and Julius flushed red with embarrasment.
"Ah, well then," grinned the later. "Good job there..."
"Indeed," said the other. "Umm......good thinking."
"Someone here has to use their brain, I guess. May as well be me." No reply as they stepped out of the mausoleum and into the open air. They were now in a human cemetary, your typical mortal burial ground. Over the centuries, these places hadn't changed much. Still just bodies under 6 feet of dirt; it had been like that since early man, and it still was. "So, my genius love, where are we? Can you figure that much out?"
Julius frowned. "Hey, don't make fun. This is, as I said it would be, one of the more lavish areas of New York. Large houses that seem more like mansions then homes. Driveways that last forever. It's called Greenview Estates."
"Eeew, sounds rich and everything," Alex shuddered. "Well, I think these peple are in need of a good fright. Let's go!" They made their way from the graveyard, walking along the street. Hovercars passed by them through the air high above them. The cars of the 20th century had long been abandoned; the many passageways that had been created for them were now for the usage of pedestrians. But then, who walked anywhere anymore? Only Halloween creatures. Most mortals would dawn a jetpack and fly whereever they needed to go, or else get on the Hoverbus. Every now and again you'd see a human jogging along through here, but it wasn't very common anymore. Walking was a thing of the past. Everything was.
The small group continued along on their way now, past houses and cars. Houses these days appeared to be more like domes. However the mortals had come up with that crazy idea none of the Halloweeners could tell. But it didn't matter. As long as it wasn't affecting them, they really didn't care.
But nothing had changed the natural side of things. Trees were still trees and flowers were still flowers. In the mid 22nd century the mortals had really pulled their act together regarding the enviroment. The planet had been seriously deteriorating, even the Holiday worlds had been feeling the effects of polution. But fortunately the humans had done a few smart things for once. Changed the way factories functioned so ans to cut down on the release of gases, changed car designs, found ways to get rid of the polutition that already existed. It was only for those things done way back then that anyone lived on this planet any more. Now trees and plants of many varieties existed, and various species that had been thought to be extinct had mysteriously re-appeared.
"Yo, where are we going?" asked Barrel suddenly. "We're walking, but we're not getting anywhere. We came here to scare people, remember?"
"I know, my friend," Julius smiled. "We're heading to Central Park. It's not far from here. Down the street and over a small river. It'll lead us into one of the many trails in the park."
"Okay then, sounds great. I've just never gone this way, usually I go down the other was towards the hoverbus stop to go see broadway."
"You've gotta have patience with me. Alex does, right kid?"
A shrug. "I dunno, I'm just following along. Never said I trusted you."
"Great, thanks for the vote of confidence! I'll get us there, don't worry. And when we finally do arrive, we're gonna have the time of our lives!"

Julius kept his word--they did get to Central Park, and they did have a blast for themselves. They spent the entire day scaring people along the many paths--elderly couples, small children, and teenage couples alike. It was a most rewarding day.
"Great fun," grinned Alex. "I'm glad I took the day off to come."
"Me too son. We all needed the break, we really did. I feel so much more relaxed now, not half so tense."
"God, I know," their 'guide' piped. "This has been great. And we're not even done yet, we have so much left to see within the next few days!"
"Indeed," nodded the Prince. "But we've gotta find some place to sleep tonight. It's getting dark."
"So it is. Come on then, I know a way out from here. Then we can check in to a motel and sleep."

Getting out of Central Park turned out not to be as easy as they had hoped. Barrel and Julius kept differing in opinions, the former often disagreeing with what the later would say.
"That's not the way we did it last time we were in here," he said at one point. "It's that way."
"No, it's not. Now shut up, you'r confusing me. Oh, I'm so confused now! Is it your way or....damn you..."
"Well, you got us in so you get us out."
"I would if you hadn't gotten us lost."
"Me? Got us lost?"
"Who's the one who took us down the trail back there that I said not to travel down? Huh? Wasn't me!"
"Julius, I'm only trying to help, you bastard."
"Help? He wants to fuckin' HELP now!"
"SHUT THE HELL UP!" cried Alex, tossing his hands into the air. "Just quit this, alright? I didn't come here to be stuck in the middle of your pety arguments."
"Son, please, just stay out of this," his father begged.
"No, dad. I'm in this to. Just lay off Julius, alright? He obviously knows his way around. You don't. Back down."
He frowned slightly. "I'm not asking your opinion, lad."
A shrug. "You're getting it anyways though." He paused, looking about himself. He then backed up slightly, glancing to his right. He smiled bitterly. "Well, look who just saved the day. It was right there you idiots, before your bloody eyes. A nice little path that exits right to the street. And look, a perfectly fine motel. We all brought cash, right?"
"Right," the two said at once, feeling mightily ashamed.
"I'm sorry, Alex," Barrel sighed. "I shouldn't have jumped on you like that."
He raised an eyebrow. "I'm not the one you should be apologizing to, sir." Then without waiting he left them, heading out by himself to the street. Barrel turned towards Julius, who was slightly behind him. "Look, I didn't mean anything I said to you, I really didn't," he began. "I was tired and hungry and....well, I don't like being angry with you, I really don't. Forgive me?"
A smile. "Course I do, I love you." He stepped forward, laying a kiss upon his lover's lips as he wrapped his arms around him. It was a long moment before they released each other, smiling as they did so. Holding hands, they headed out to where Alex waited. "You know," Julius started, "we should get married. You and me."
"Oh, my...." Barrel sighed. "Now is not the time nor the place to be discussing this, luv. Not with Alex present and all...."
"You mean you don't want to? How about I make it an official proposal then, get on my knee and the works?"
"Later, Julius. We'll talk about it at the motel, I promise. I'd like to as much as you, but there are many factors to consider. Legal stuff, the boy, everything. Just give me this much. Now hush, we're there." Both put on smiles as Alex turned to see them.
"Ah, everything all reconciled?" he said.
"Yep," his father nodded. "Now let's go check into that motel."

The rooms were very nice indeed. King sized beds with great service. Alex took a room on his own, letting the other two men share one.
Barrel was just pouring out some of the wine he had ordered for the both of them when Julius brought up his proposal again. "So what'd ya think?" he asked as his lover passed him a filled glass.
"About what we discussed earlier?"
They each took a seat on the bed. "I don't know," he sighed. "I mean, it sounds fantastic to me, but...there's so much to consider. What people will think, how they'll react, whether the law will let us or not..."
"Who cares what they think though!" came the frustrated cry. "We love each other Barrel, doesn't that matter?"
"Well, yes, certainly..."
"Then we shouldn't be bothering with what they think!"
"It's not just that though. The law as well. It's still forbidden for a couple such as us to be wedded in holy matrimony. I don't know why, I honestly don't, even the humans changed that law hundreds of years ago..."
"Forgive me love, but your sister isn't being very fair. You know how the gay and lesbian community has been fighting for the right to marry for years."
"Yes..."
"Then we ought to fight as well, you and me. Surely you could help make a difference, being her brother and all. I love you so much Barrel, I want to do nothing else except for live the rest of my life with you." Setting his empty glass aside carefully he touched Barrel's face, moving closer towards him. "Tell me you feel the same."
A little smile as he put away his own glass and returned to hold Julius' head between his hands. "Love, I'll fight with you, to the very end. I care deeply for my sister, but she needs to know that what she's doing by forbidding our type to wed is wrong." A kiss. "We'll show her together, no matter what."
"Oh, that's my Barrel, my delicious Barrel, my exquisite lover." A long, passionate kiss as their arms wrapped around each other. Their lips united and the pair fell to the mattress, thinking only of each other. "Yes my love, hold me, embrace me, make love to me..." Julius whispered. "Do to me what only you can. Make me yours."
"Mmm, don't worry," the prince sighed as the taste of his companion filled him. "I will. I'll give you a time you'll never forget, my dearest..." His mouth slipped down Julius' neck gently as he undid the buttons of his shirt, pulling it away. His lips kissed this bare flesh, warm and soft. "Darling darling love..." he mumbled. "Oh yes, married, that is what we shall be, you my husband and the both of us together forevermore..."
"Quiet now," came the voice as they kissed, hands seeking to undress one another. "Just do to me what we both want. Do it, take me now."
"Yes, oh yes I shall..." he muttered to the voice. "I could not possibly dream of anything else..."

They woke up the next morning in each other's arms, Julius with his head buried in Barrel's neck. A soft smile from the later, hand in the other man's hair. Both were shaking themselves from their slumber.
"Good morning," he said. "Sleep well?"
"Yes, thank you. After last night? I was too exhausted not to."
A kiss. "I wonder what time it is?"
"According to the clock by the bed, 10:06."
"Really? Christ, Alex is probably wondering what the hell is going on in here...we gotta get up now, love."
"Fuck...he's probably just smart enough not to barge in."
"Who wants to find their father in bed with another man?" Barrel joked. "Come on now, love, let me up."
"Wah," he pouted, doing as he was told. He watched as his lover headed to his backpack on the floor, puling out his clothes and tossing them on. He was dressed in less then 5 minutes, then grabbed Julius' clothing and flunged them at him. "Come on now, get up and dress. I'll get my son."
A low grunt. "Oh fine. I'll be waiting for you."
"Right. Don't go anywhere, I won't be long."

Alex was just sitting reading a book when the expected knock came at the door. "Come on in, dad," he called, setting down the novel. In walked the prince, closing the door to behind him.
"Up and dressed alread," he declared. "Impressive. You, um, could have come got us...."
"No, that's okay." A polite smile. "I wouldn't do that to mom if she'd been in bed with one of her boyfriends, okay? You and Julius is no different. Even if you'd been clothed."
He took a seat. "How'd you know that we..."
"Well, seeing as how most days you usually rise pretty early, I knew that something had to have been happening in order for you to stay in bed till 10:00. So I had intended to let you be until one of you came to fetch me." He rose, placing the book in his backpack with a smile. "They don't call me detective for nothing, old man."
"You're not...embarrassed or anything, are you?" Barrel asked timidly. "Because it's important to me that you understand who I am. That you know what it means for me to be like this, to be gay."
"No, I'm not embarrassed father. If anything, I'm proud. It's clear that you two love each other a lot." He returned, sitting back down. "That's the most important part, in any relationship. Love."
"I'm glad you feel that way, my dear. Because me and Julius wanted to get married."
Alex raised his eyebrows. "Really? Well, congratulations."
"Thank you. It's just that, we're not sure if it's legally allowed for us to. Shock still hasn't declared gay and lesbian marriages legal."
Alex tapped his index fingers together as he thought. "Hmm, yes....I see your point. She hasn't, has she? What are you going to do about that?"
"Fight, of course," came the reply. "Even if she is my sister, and your aunt, I can't let her do this, neither me nor Julius can. we love each other boy, so much that we wish to join together in marriage. I can't let her tell us that we're not allowed to do that."
"Exactly. I see your point, I really do. And you ought to know that I support you fully. If you need help in your campaign against the laws bounding you, I'm right here. I know all the legal stuff, I know the Halloween laws like the back of my hand. I'll be your guide, you can say."
A smile. "Thanks, Alex."
"Certainly. If you want we can go back now, fit in a few scares and get started on our goals. Broadway will always be there later on."
"You want to?"
"Yeah, sure. I'm all ready for this."
A nod. "Alright then. We'll go fetch Julius and be on our way.

Julius was thrilled with this news and they set off not long afterwards, paying for the rooms before heading off.
After the promised couple of scares the three headed back to Halloween, taking the same mausoeum tunnel as before. "That was a wonderful time," Alex declared as they walked on the path from the graveyard into town. "Even when you were fighting. New York is brilliant, I'll go back again on my own sometime."
"Perhaps we could go on other trips around the world," Barrel suggested.
"It all sound fab to me," replied Alex.
Julius just tapped his hopeful fiance on the shoulder, pointing ahead of him. "Look, there's town," he declared. "Did you want to go straight on to Shock or drop off our things first?"
"Drop off our backpacks," declared Alex. "That's a much beter plan. We can go now and be back in front of town hall in 15 minutes."
His father laughed. "Mr. Impulsive. That's it then I guess." By now they had reached the main gates, opening them up as they stepped inside. "See you in a bit, boy."
A nod. "Right. See ya."

They met exactly as promised, Barrel and Julius arriving the same time as Alex. "Ready?" asked the later.
"Indeed," his fater replied as he took his love's hand. "Never been readier."
"Great. Here we go then." The trio stepped into town hall, to find everyone busily at work as usual.
"Barrel!" cried Shock suddenly as she appeared out of nowhere. "Julius, Alex! What are you doing back here so suddenly? You should see how much shit the tabloids are spreading, they're really getting into this whole 'Barrel's-Got-A-Son' thing..."
"Wonderful, sis," her brother replied. "Listen, we need to talk to you."
She was confused. "About what?"
"Me and Julius. There's no simple way of telling you this; we want to get married."
Immediately she frowned, crossing her arms. "You know what the law states..."
"We certainly do," countered Alex, "And neither of us think it's fair. I may not be gay myself but I believe that if two men or two women are in love and wish to be united through marriage, they ought to have that right."
"It's not fair that you should do this to us, sis," Barrel told her. "We want something done about it."
She turned and began to head away, walking briskly as they followed. "I can't just up and change the rules, it's not like that. For decades people have been complaining for this rule to be changed...what makes you think it'll happen now?"
Barrel grabbed her by the shoulder, whirling her around. "Listen to me, Shock. You're not looking at this fairly. I thought you supported me, you always promised that if I needed something I could come to you. And now you're refusing me."
"I'm not refusing you, I'm doing my job."
"But what's so bloody wrong about letting gays and lesbians marry?" demanded Julius. "What the fuck is the problem with it? We're people like anyone else, right? We love, we cherish, the same as any normal couple. It's just the fact that one of us isn't of the opposite sex that prevents us from so many things in life."
"Exactly," Barrel nodded. "Shock, do it for me. Just grant us this one wish. Reverse the rules that so many want changed. Let me and Julius be happy for the rest of our lives."
"Do what's morally right, Aunt," Alex told her. "Please."
She took a step back. "No, I can't."
"Somehow I knew you'd do this," her brother sighed. "We all did. Fine then, sibling. Be that way. But we won't take this lying down. We'll fight you till the end, you and your little lackies."
"You can't," she hissed. "It'll tear the family apart, tear us apart..."
"Then change your mind."
"I can't just...."
He held up a hand. "Then say no more. We're through here. The next word you'll hear out of me will be through my lawyers." Then the three turned on their heals, leaving the building. They allowed the doors to slam shut behind them, causing everyone working to look up.
Shock merely sighed to herself. "What have I done?" she whispered.

They set to work immediately, Barrel, Julius, and Alex. The later went searching for good lawyers, a team to repesent the three of them. The former two went to visit the A.R.G.L.H., the Association for the Rights of Gays and Lesbians in Halloween Town. Barrel did the speaking, heading up to a young woman at a desk upon steping inside the main headquarter building.
"Who is the person in charge here?" he asked her immediately.
"Mr. Drew Dawson, your highness. Did you wish to see him?"
"Yes, I did. We have important news for him."
A nod from the lady as she pressed a button on an intercom, stating to Mr. Dawson's secretary the situation; Barrel Skellington and Julius Thornton were here to see Drew. A matter of urgency.
"Send them up," came the reply. The woman in turn looked towards th visitors. "Take the elevator up to the third floor," she instructed. Turn left, 2nd door on your right. Can't miss it."
"Thanks," Julius smiled as they headed off, stepping into the nearest elevator. He gave Barrel a kiss. "We're really doing it," he smiled. "Defending our purpose, standing up to the powers. I'm proud of you."
"And I'm proud of you to," came the reply as they stepped out. "God, we're almost there...That door, his name is on it..." He turned to Julius, brushing off the man's jacket. "Remembr, we're on official business. Coduct yourself with dignity."
A nod. "Right. Okay, let's go before I loose my nerves."
He laughed, opening the door and stepping inside. They were apparantly now in an empty waiting room, which was decorated with paintings by artists of many years before; Da Vinci, Van Gogh, all the masters. A plush leather sofa sat against one black painted wall, and three wooden chairs against another white one.
"Ah, hello there," smiled a woman to their right. They tirned to look at her; thirty-something with long brown hair and green eyes. "He's waiting for you, just head on in."
"Thank you," Barrel smiled, heading for a brown door. He opened it up, allowing him and Julius to step inside.
There at a desk sat Drew Dawson, reading some papers. Startled to have company he stood up, smiling pleasantly. He had lovely pale white skin, plus the highest most exquistite cheekbones either of the other men had ever seen. He brushed his thick black hair from his face before shaking their hands. "Hello, Mr. Skellington, Mr. Thornton. Come in, sit down across from me here. How lovely to see you, the two most prominent and popular men in the gay society. What brings you here?"
They all took a seat. "Mr. Dawson," Barrel began.
"Drew," he corrected.
A nod. "Drew. Me and Julius here wish to seek the assistance of the A.R.G.L.H. Surely you know how my sister, Queen Shock, still has not lifted her law on the forbidding of marriage between two men or two women."
"Very well, yes."
"Well, myself and Julius here wanted to be wedded, but my sibling still won't lift her law. So we've come here to you, to see if your society will help us with our campaign. You know; protests, perhaps a lawsuit, anything to get our way."
"Sir, we're desperate," the other man piped. "There's nothing more we want at this point then to have each other in marriage. But we need you people in order to make that dream, and the dream of thousands like us, come true."
A grin. "Certainly we'll help. We help all gays, lesbians, and bisexuals. No matter what the issue. I see this as a chance to really display our intent to the Holiday worlds. The brother of the Queen and his lover, joined with the A.R.G.L.H. to display their disatisfaction of the law. Indeed, for many years our society has attempted to bargain with her majesty to come to some agreement. She never has though, won't so much as return our calls. But with you two, we can possibly boost the morale of the rest of our community. Show them that there is hope. If there's anyone the queen will listen to, surely it's her brother."
"We can make her life a living hell," Barrel stated. "I know how to get the media to drive her to her last nerves; I've known how to drive her nuts since I was 2. We'll spread the shit around big time."
"Not that there's not already enoguh crap about you already," Julius frowned.
"So? We'll use that to our potential. Grant them interviews then promote our purpose."
"Brilliant," Drew nodded. "My friends, I could not possibly refuse this offer. We'll start immediately, starting with an emergency dispatch to the members of our league. We send out a paper every morning to the gays and lesbians of Halloweentown..."
"Yes, we get it ourselves," Julius cut in.
"We'll announce this joint effort of ours then," he concluded. Set up a date for a protest outside Town Hall. You two can be the spokespeople for the A.R.G.L.H., declare our purpose."
"And if that doesn't work, we can move on to other methods," Barrel nodded. "A great plan, Drew. Publish for the rally to be the morning after tommorrow, meeting here at 8:30. From there we'll march down main street and to Town Hall, where we'll demand to see the Queen."
Julius clapped his hands together excitedly. "Oh, how marvelous this all is! I just hope we're able to somehow make a difference..."
"Oh, we will," Barrel sneered as he scratched his goatee. "Somehow, we will...."

Shock went home that evening tired and exhausted, mentally and physically drained. Upon stepping inside her home she headed directly to the sofa, falling down upon it with a heavy plop.
"Hey there," came a voice as Ira steped in. He carried their son Drake in his arms, Alisa at his side. Carefully he set the 6 month old baby down into a playpen, letting the girl head off to the playroom just across the hall. "Bad day?" he asked with a frown, sitting beside his queen.
"Excrutiating," she chuckled as she sank into his warm embrace. "You're not going to believe it. First off, Barrel, Julius, and Alex came back early."
"Really? How nice."
"Yeah, really," she said sarcastically. "They then came down to town hall, where my brother and Julius asked about geting married."
"It's against the law though," he asked with slight confusion.
"Exactly! I told them that, but they got upset because I wouldn't change the law. If I could I'd gladly do so. I'm simply doing what my advisors are telling me to. Besides, I can't just get up and change it. These things take months, years even to process. They're expecting me to be magic or something. I can't do that, I'm sorry."
"Understandable dear. So what was their reaction to that?"
She sighed. "They got really upset, all of them. I know they've got some type of 'revenge' in mind, but I'm afraid to ask what. Barrel being my brother and all, it'd be very easy for them to get whatever they want. I know they've got somethign cooking, they threatened me before leaving Town Hall. Said that their lawyers would be calling."
"Oh, dear," he frowned. "Why don't you call them back up, to talk it over with them. Surely you can work something out..."
She shook her head. "No, I won't. I refuse to. We'll just have to make this last; I'll fight them till the end."
He shrugged. "As you wish, my love." A gentle kiss. "I'll be here for you the entire way."

Barrel had his plans already drawn up for that evening. He headed down to the newpaper main office, where he knew he'd be recieved with open arms. Tell the people their that he'd gladly issue them an interview so long as they'd help promote his cause. Julius meanwhile headed on down to see Drew, who wanted some help with planning the protest. As for Alex, he was supposedly straightening out some minor legal problems.
As he'd hoped and known, the journalists at the Halloween Weekly welcomed him quite willingly. Almost immediately they set him down with Carol Batimore, one of their top writers. She asked him a bit about the whole Alex issue and then about the thing with Shock and the A.R.G.L.H. And, as he'd requested, she promised to really focus on the later problem seeing as how they wouldn't have had the interview had he not come to them. The article would be printed the next day, apparantly. Barrel was pleased with this; now all he had to do was sit back and wait for the shit to hit the newstands.

Jack sat down the next morning as he always did with his coffee and the newspaper; a daily ritual. He opened up to the front page, reading the article;
PRINCE OF HALLOWEEN DECLARES WAR ON ANTI-GAY/LESBIAN LAWS
Barrel Skellington voluntarily sat down with us to have a bit of a talk about his newest campaign; the war against his sister Queen Shock's forbidal for people other then 'straight' people to marry. "It's not right," he said. "In fact, it's just wrong. Who is she to declare what we can and cannot do. Myself and my hopeful fiance-to-be Julius Thornton are heavily battling her refusal to co-operate. We're not going to put up with her stubborn behavior."
Upon being asked why he wanted these rights so much, Barrel wated no time answering. "Because it's everyone's right to able to wed if they so desire. There is no reason why we shouldn't. We're still human after all, why not."
He says that this issue has nothing to do with his reunion with his son Alex in any way, shape or form. "Alex has had no impact on this decision to stand up to my sibling," he told us. "Though he's a strong force in the battle against her, he didn't try to influence the decision or anything if that's what you mean. It's great to have him fighting with me though, it's great to have them at all. See until now I had no clue I had a son. Now that we've been brought together at last, we've really bonded. He's a great kid, I love him a lot."
The Prince, though angered by the whole situation with Shock, has only good things to say about her. "She's a great person, she really is," he told us. "A bit mule-headed at times, but wodnerful just the same. Now's one of those stubborn times." A shrug. "I just hope she comes out of it before she really regrets it."
Jack just sighed as he put down the article. This wasn't looking good at all.

By the end of the day everything was apparantly set up. The rally was all ready; calls were pouring in from supporters all over. Legally, Alex had ensured that neither the company nor the three of them could be sued or harrassed in any way; neither by Shock nor anyone else. Also he had a lawsuit already to go. He had case already it appeared against the Queen. He wanted to charge her with Negligency towards a population, the gay and lesbian community. It was all ready to go.
It couldn't eventually be helped that Jack would hear of his son's arrival back in town. That evening when Alex had gone to see Janine the old King rung up his youngest son.
"Ah, my boy!" he said with a smile in his voice upon hearing the familiar tone. "Heard from the article in the paper that you were in town," he commented. "I was surprised you didn't call..."
"I was busy," he cut in. "Tomorrow's a big day, old man. Myself, Alex, and Julius have been devoting a lot of time to it." A low chuckle. "I'm not going to both telling you about our cause though. Shock's probably gotten to you already, she's gotten you brainwashed by now."
"Now now, I take the side of none of my children. I support you all. I guess you're pretty upset, aren't you?"
"Upset doesn't cover it. I'm furious, all of us are. It's not fair, Jack. I love Julius a lot, he loves me. Dad, he proposed, we want to get married. But Shock's stupid law won't allow us to! What's more, she simply refesed to make some sort of a deal, any little bargain. I'm not going to put up with it..."
"Yes, yes, I see your point," came the voice from the other end of the line. "I see it very clear. And I see Shock's too, somewhat. She can't just change it like that on the spot. It takes a great deal of time for these requests to be processed, you know how the Town government works these days. Plus there's the feelings of the rest of the town, and what her advisors have been saying. I know, they did the same to me. Told me not to allow the gay and lesbian right thing. Whyever not I couldn't figure out, I should have used more force and told them to shove off. Had I known at the time that you'd been one of them....but oh well I suppose."
"Well all that's just too bad for her," Barrel snapped at his father. "She's just using that for excuses. I just can't believe she's doing this, she always led me to believe that she was supportive of my way of life, she never made me feel as if there were reason to doubt myself. Now she's up to these tricks. It really saddens me, Jack, that she lied. I don't care what you say, she lied to me. Promised that she'd be there fr me and right now when I need her the most, she's gone."
A sigh. "My dear son....I don't know what else I can say to you. I'm not going to try and force any of my views upon you, none of that stuff. Whatever you feel the need to do, I support. Just please, use your common sense. The last thing we need right now are four siblings that refuse to speak to each other, all competing for mommy and daddy's attention. Okay?"
He nodded into the reciever. "Alright. Thanks old man."
"Of course, son. Come visit sometime within the next couple of days."
"Certainly."
"And call you brother and younger sister. They're worried about you."
"Really? Oh, I'll get to that then. They're not the ones I'm angry at, so why punish them, eh? Sure Jack, of course. See ya round."
"Bye, Barrel. Be careful."

Lock was just sitting in the living room enjoying a nice glass of wine when he phone rang. He picked it up. "Hello?"
"Hey, Lock?" came an all to familiar voice.
He perked up. "Barrel! Thanks for calling, I was wondering if you were upset with me as well!"
"No, not with you bro. Shock maybe, but not you. You haven't done anything."
"Yeah, she told me the situation. But I don't get her points, they don't really make sense to me. I mean certainly I'm not going to take sides, but she is wrong."
"Indeed she is. Dead wrong. She should just change the goddamn law and save all the trouble. Cause she's getting herself in farther then she can handle. She might be the queen, but we've got tricks up our sleeves that she won't be able to cope with."
"We? Who's that?"
"The entire gay and lesbian community, bro. We're fed up, and we're going to let her know that. Tommorrow morning." He paused. "I'm gonna call Kyrene and get her in on this, three way. You mind?"
"Nah, no prob."
"Kay, I'll be right back." The line went silent for a second before Barrel returned having dialed the number on the opposite line. Now both could hear her.
"Hello?" she asked as she picked up the reciever.
"Kyrene? It's me."
"Barrel!" she cried. "Oh, hi there, what've ya been up to so secretive?"
"Exactly what me and Lock here were just talking about."
"Hello," he piped.
"Wow, three way. Never done this before. Well, I'd really like to know why you've been keeping away from us since you got back."
"I wasn't keeping away from you," the youngest of the brothers replied. "I was busy, very very busy. Shock told you the situation, right?"
"Yeah..."
"Well, me and Julius went down to the head office of the Association for the Right of Gays and Lesbians of Halloween Town, and tommorrow we're holding a protest outside of Town Hall. It's not fair, and something has to be done about it."
You could hear the frown in her voice. "Now, don't go too far away with this, you hear me?"
"Who said I was going too far? Are you on her side now?" Both were growing angry.
"Perhaps you ought to take a step back and look at the whole issue, I mean. Maybe you could learn to understand her viewpoints..."
"Whoa, whoa, whoa!" cried Lock. "Just simmer down there you two, will ya? I don't need the both of you screaming in my ear." Silence. "Now, let's talk this over like civil adults. Obviously there's a difference in opinion going on here. That's alright. But that doesn't mean that we have to force our way of thinking upon other people, does it? It's not going to work, you already know that. The both of you are very hard-headed people, our entire family is. All the Skellingtons are. So we'll never see eye-to-eye. Instead, we can talk about our own view of the issue and explain why we think this is so. Now, let's try this out, huh?"
"What's to try?" asked Barrel. "There's nothing to discuss here. I'm through with trying to explain myself to everyone, with everyone getting so upset with my viewpoints. I quit. nothing you say, Kyrene, will chane the way I see things at this time. You're wrong, you all are, and i'm going to make you see it. Now good-bye; I'll see you again hopefully soon." And then with a click he was gone.
The princess just sighed. "Well, That went over just great."
"Sure did," sighed Lock. "Bloody perfect..."

Julius, Barrel, and Alex showed up to the A.R.G.L.H. at around 8:00 the next mornign, along with Drew. By 8:30 the main parking lot was filled with thousands of gays, lesbians, bi, and striaght people alike ready to demand for their rights. Barrel smiled as Drew handed him a bullhorn. "They're all yours," he said with a grin. "Take it away."
A little nod, signaling to Julius and Alex that it was time. "Ladies and Gentleman!" he began. Silence flooded the area. "We have all joined together on this most historic day to protest that the Halloween goverment dosomething about the law restricting gays and lesbians to marry. It's not right and about time that something was done about it!" Cheers. "We must band together now at this time to show that we mean business; no longer are we going to take this bullshit sitting down. We're going to stand up and stand proud as we march down there to Town Hall to insist that we see the Queen. Nothing will stand in our way!" The crowd roared with delight, the cries of thousands of determined people filling the air. "Now, let's go!" Barrel took the lead, Julius, Drew and Alex right behind him, all four leading the mob. A chant began to rise as they headed down the street; We want our rights! We want our rights! It made every person there proud to know that for once they were taking a stand, standing up for themselves. Signs were held high and voices echoed loudly, turning heads and drawing crowds as they made their way along. Barrel walked with fierce determination, his mission set clear in his mind; he wouldn't fail at what he intended to do today; absolutely not.
The crowd had reached Town Hall by 9:00, their leaders standing on the main steps. Barrel still had the bullhorn, which he now used.
"Come on out, Shock!" he demanded as turned to face the ancient building. "Show your face to the world, stop cowering in there! We demand to see you at once!" Nothing. "You're so proud and mighty? Prove it! Come on out here and tell us face-to-face your personal beliefs. We dare you!" Still no answer form inside; the entrance remained bolted tight. He frowned. "Typical," he muttered to Julius and Alex. "I knew she'd pull something like this..."
He didn't get the oppurtunity to say any more. The door to Town Hall flew open, and there she was; Shock herself. A little smile from Barrel. "Ah, so you heard us," he smiled. "I think we have some issues to discuss here..."
She frowned at him. "How dare you bring all these people here. It shall do you no good, brother. I won't change my mind."
A little shrug. "We'll soon see then, won't we?" turning back to the crowd he raised the bullhorn. "Here she is folks, my sister the queen. Still, though, she refuses to give us what we want!" Loud cries and angry shouts. "Certainly we don't like that. For centuries now people like us have wanted the right to wed and everything else that ordinary people have; this is not an item that just sprang up. Hell no! It's existed for generations. It is only now that we have decided to stand up for our rights, to make them known to everyone else. We won't leave today until we are given what we want." He looked towards Shock. "If you would only listen to our pleas and grant us our wishes, we'd leave you alone."
"I've already explained it, it's not that easy," she cried, her voice echoing loudly. "You all make demands but don't think about them. I can't simply do what you want me to; it's not that easy!"
He put down the bullhorn, gazing directly at her. "Please," he begged his sibling. "Shock I hate arguing with you, it's the worst feeling in the world. You've always been thee for me in the past, you've done things for me nobody else ever would. At times I can remember when you'd take heavy beatings from our biological father, just to protect me. I want this fighting to end, sis. I want this whole thing to end, this crisis that's been going on for hundreds of years. Screw what your 'advisors' say; listen to your heart." He took Julius' arm. "For all of us."
She closed her eyes slowly, taking all this in. Should she or not? She had the power to, all the laws could be changed within minutes if she so desired....the question was, should she? What would everyone else say, the citizens, her advisors...it was a tough choice. Everyone stood watching her now; Barrel, Julius, Alex, Drew, and countles other strangers. She just stood there, unmoving, pondering the situation at hand.
It was a few minutes before she reopened her eyes. Glancing out at the mob she took the bullhorn at last, speaking out to them.
"You're all absolutely right," she declared. "I am nobody to be standing in your path in your lives. What I've been doing is wrong and heartless indeed." She glanced at her sibling. "I am changing the law; any gays or lesbians that choose to wed may do so. And that is my final word on the subject." The crowd burst into fanatical cheers, hats being tossed victoriously into the air. Barrel gave her a huge hug, having never loved her more then he did in that moment. He smiled as he pulled back so he could see her tear-stained face.
"Thanks, Shock," he smiled. "I knew you'd pull through." Then turning around he ran into Julius' arms, kissing him passionately before everyone. Though he was quite surprised Julius accepted this gesture quite easily, soon dipping his love backwards in his arms. Their lips parted and Barrel stood up straight, wrapping his arms around his lover's neck. "Congratulations," he said.
"No, congratulations to you. You did all the talking." Then pulling back slightly Julius produced from his pocket a little box. He got down on one knee, opening the box to reveal a 24 karat gold engagement ring. The crowd cheered excitedly as he removed it, taking Barrel's hand. "My dearest love, please give me this one great honour. Marry me."
A little smile and a tear as the ring was slipped over his finger. "Oh, Julius...yes, I will!'"
The other man stood happily, embracing him yet again as they sank into another kiss. The people cheered and clapped, slowly dispersing now that they had gotten what they wanted. Their duty here was done.
Alex just stood by his Aunt, watching his father and his soon to be step-father. A smile crossed his face. "You did the right thing," he told her as Drew nodded in agreement. "Way to go."

********************************************************************

The wedding was held 3 months later, a grand and lustrious event. It was agreed that Julius would assume the Skellington name, an idea most everyone liked. Their closest family and friends came; fellow gays and lesbians, old friends of both families. Julius' parents, Jack and Sally, Shock, Kyrene, Lock, Alex, Rachael, the mayor...just about everyone. In the weeks that had passed since Shock's declaration to change the law forbidding non-straight people to marry, many gay and lesbian couples had tied the knot. The ARGLH was extremely grateful to the two men who had helped them out so much, giving them awards of honour.
At this moment everyone sat waiting for the soon-to-be married couple. Seeing as there was no bride, things would be working slightly different this wedding. No best man, but a procession would still be coming out before the men of the moment. Countless beings sat out among the pews, the Skellington and the Thornton parents in the front seats. There would be no 'brides maids' or 'grooms men', simply couples filing out before them. Of course the females would be wearing special dresses, ones that Shock and Kyrene had specially designed.
The crowd was just starting to bcome unsettled when at last the music started to play. Every person turned around to see the first people couple out; Shock and Ira, arm-in-arm. Kyrene and Jacob followed, then Lock and Elizabeth as well as Alex and Janine. Various other people came out as well, a couple of male/male female/female pairs.
Around 12 or 14 people later down the aisle came little Alisa in a little black lace dress carrying a basket of rose petals. She tossed them about happily, pleased to have been chosen as the flower girl. She stood tall now, grinning as everyone cooed over her. She sat with her parents in the front of the church, allowing her step-father to lift her on his shoulders to better see above the many heads. The music changed quite quickly and they all rose, striving to see the two men of the hour. They soon appeared, in matching black tuxedos. The suits featured tails and a white rose in the pocket, a rose every man designated to be in the procession wore. They walked arm-in-arm as everyone else had, smiles upon their faces. It was clear to all how in love these two men were, to be here today and carrying out this task.
At last they stood before the alter and the priest; time for the ceremony. Here in Halloween the wedding had always been slightly different. Exceedingly similar to the human wedding they had edited out all "God" refrences long ago. They didn't believe in the idea of a 'heavenly ruler" of any kind, to them the idea was ubsurd. So the ceremony itself was rather short; afterwards it'd be on to the reception.
"Ladies and Gents of Halloween Town, welcome to the wedding of Barrel Skellington and Julius Thornton. Today we join these two men together in matrimony and wedded bliss....."

A little while later it was time for the vows. They had chosen to write their own, allowing Barrel to go first. He cleared his throat when it was time, taking Julius' hands and staring straight into his eyes. Silence for a minute, then he began.
"Julius...my beloved darling Julius. Where would I be had you not come into my life? Before you I was a lost soul, wandering this planet with an empty heart. But now that I have you, things are different...much different. You are a great man, a true marvel, and I'm glad to have you with me by my side on this day. I swear to you, I will be a faithful and honest husband. I'll be there when you need me and even when you don't. I'll be understanding and reliable. Hell, I'll be whatever you damn well want me to be." From the priest he accepted the other man's wedding ring, taking it and sliding it on over his finger. "This is my solemn vow."
A little smile as Julius looked at Barrel. "I never thought I'd live to see this day," he said. "The day I'd wed the love of my life. You're a wonderful individual, Barrel. Kind, funny, caring...oh, there's so many reasons why I first fell for you. I couldn't imagine having anyone else. Darling, I guarantee to you that I'll be all those things you listed and more. I'll love you forever, until the end of time." He now took the remaining ring, slipping it over the third finger of his love's right hand. "This is my solemn vow."
A little grin from the priest. "By the power invested in me by the town of Halloween and her majesty Queen Shock the First, I now pronounce you husband and husband. You may now kiss the... err....each other."
Immediately Julius grabbed Barrel, pulling him in for a long and deep kiss. The crowd stood and applauded as they released each other, smiling and cheering as the music began to play. The newlyweds headed back down the aisle and outside. They stood just before a concrete railing overlooking the street, the three main sets of doors opening as everyone filed out. Many folks came over to give their congratulations, heading on their way to the reception party. The couple just stood there smiling and nodding at all the compliments, until Jack and Sally finally approached. Jack embraced his son while Sally embraced their new son-in-law.
"Oh, we're so pleased," she declared as the man accepted her hug. "I couldn't have wished better for my guy then you, Julius."
"Neither could I," the former King said as they pulled back. They switched, hugging the other persons.
"Way to go, little bro!" declared Lock as he, his wife, and their almost one year old daughter Laurella came over. More hugs. "You did it, stood up to the man and got your own way. I'm sure you're quite pleased."
"Oh, I am," came the laugh as he wrapped an arm around the waist of his love. "We both are." Still more people as Alex and Janine now came over.
"Congrats, dad. I'm proud."
"We both are," piped Janine.
Next came Kyrene and Jacob. "Quite the little gathering going on over here," smiled the former. "Guess it's my turn then, isn't it? I'm so pleased for you two, it's nice that you finally got what you wanted."
"Indeed," came another voice. They all turned to see Shock and Ira, the later of which carried baby Drake. At their side stood Alisa, basket still hanging on her arm.
The Queen simply stood forward, until she was in front of her brother. Both were now remembering that protest and the fight leading up to it, wondering and pondering various things in their minds. Then at last she reched forward and pulled him into a hug, kissing his cheek as a tear slid down her own. "Oh, little brother," she sighed. "I'm so proud of you. I never thought I'd see you getting married. I'm sorry I put you through all that trouble, I'm sorry for both you and your darling husband."
He touched her hair, accepting the hug. "That's alright. Everything's okay now."
Slowly they pulled apart, just as Julius' parents approaced. John and Leslie Thornton, both respected figures in the community. They hugged their son and their son-in-law. "Way to go, boy," John laughed. "Always knew you'd find the right one. I never imagined a wedding quite like this one but what the hell, it was lovely!" Chuckles.
"You were great," Leslie nodded as she brushed off her son's tuxedo.
"Wasn't he?" Jack commented. "They both were. Sally and myself thought so for sure."
They chatted for a while longer, until all the other guests had left for the reception. Soon they in turn left as well, leaving Julius and Barrel there alone. They waved as they everyone else headed to their designated cars, having already arranged to be coming later on in a limo.
"At last, we're alone," sighed the former as he grabbed hold of his husband, kissing him passionately against the railing. "I love you, my dear..."
"Careful there, before you knock us both down!" cried the prince. "Here, against the wall."
A little laugh. "As you wish." Quickly he grabbed the collars of his suit, flinging him against the church as their lips met. "Is that breath freshener?" laughed Julius Skellington. "Tasty." More kisses, Barrel's hands in his husbands hair. "Makes you want more."
"You can have however much you want, dear..."
"Not right here, no!" came the chuckled reply. "That's for later."
"Indeed." A little sigh as Barrel let his hands slide from his love's hair to his shoulders, Julius with his arms around the other man's waist. The former rested his head against his partners strong shoulder, enjoying this moment. "I never want this to end," he said. "I love you so much, Jule....I couldn't have possibly asked for any better."
"Neither could I, darling." He kissed the back of his lovers neck, enjoying the little shiver it produced. "I'm sorry though, we've gotta get out of this....the limo's here."
"'Fuck," came the growl as they pulled apart. "Oh well...race ya!" Quickly he darted off, heading for the black stretch that had just pulled up and diving inside the already opened door. Julius just grinned as he ran along behind, diving in after him. So far, this marriage stuff was pretty good.

They had fallen asleep stretched out in each others arms before they got to the reception. They were woken by the voice of the driver at the door, telling them that they were there. "Excuse me, sirs, we've arrived..."
A little nod as Barrel shook awake his husband. "Yes, thanks, we'll be right out...Julius, wake up!"
"Huh....yes mom..."
He grinned to himself as he leant over, planting a gentle kiss upon the other's lips. Slowly Julius opened his eyes, to find his lips tangeled in those of his darling love. Smiling he reached up to comb his fingers through the lovely green hair, sad when they parted. "That was like a fairy tale, waking up to find my prince charming," he laughed as they shared in another kiss. "I know I've certainly found mine." A yawn. "We there already?" he asked.
"Yep," came the answer. "Come on now, get out."
"Fine, fine..." he muttered, hopping out of the limo. The door was closed behind them as Barrel hopped out, thanking the driver. A little nod as he got back into the car and drove away.
"Poor guy," the prince said. "He put up with a lot from us, we were really getting carried away in the back there at first..."
A shrug. "Whatever, he's not gonna care. Surely not after what he's getting paid."
"I would imagine so." They linked arms now as they headed inside the building, Halloween
Town's major recreational facility.
"Ready?" smiled Barrel.
A grin. "Of course." They headed down a corridor and then in through a set of opened doors. This was definately their reception here, with all their family and friends.
"It's them!" came a sudden voice. "They're here!" Cheering and applause as they stepped inside.
"Ladies and gentlemen," boomed Jack's voice over the loudspeaker. "I am pleased to present to you Barrel and Julius Skellington."
The two men smiled as they headed up to the main table, at which was already seated their families. They sat down in the center chairs as they looked out at the sea of people. Cameras flashed and they could see a number of reporters, wanting to catch a glimpse of this historic wedding. Julius gave his love a kiss now as they took hands, smiling softly. "I love you," he whispered.
"Love you too," came the reply. "Forever." The prince rose from his chair, taking his already filled glass of wine. "Let the celebrations begin!" he announced.

The meal seemed to last forever. There was a lot of wonderful food, made available through a buffet style system. There were lavish deserts and extravagant main courses, anything a person could ever desire. Every now and again Barrel and Julius would share in a little kiss and whispered words of affection, letting the world know how truly in love they were.
Cake came before the dancing. Everyone gathered round as the two men of the hour began to cut it in the customary style. Taking a little piece each they began to feed each other; until Barrel smeared it all over his husbands face, that is. The crowd laughed hysterically at this. Not satisfied to go away without revenge Julius did they same, until their faces were covered in whipped cream.
"Alright there," cried Shock with a giggle as she handed each of them a towel. "Break it up you two."
Barrel grinned. "Tasty," he said.
"Expensive as well," frowned the queen. She then grinned. "But what the hey, you only get married so many times."
"Exactly," nodded Julius. "We ought to start the dance now, eh? Let the people party!"
"Great plan, I'll notify the DJ." Shock set off, leaving the two stand there among a sea of family and friends.
"Nice job, you guys," smiled Mark Hobson, a gay pal of theirs. "Julius you lucky bastard, got the hottest guy!"
Barrel raised an eyebrow. "Think so?"
"Of course," Julius said as they clasped hands. "And you're all mine."
"Mmm, sounds good..."
"Attention all," came Shock's voice now, echoing all around them. "The dance will be starting now so put on your best faces and get out on that dance floor. Best couple out there gets a prize, so get down with it!" The lights went down now and loud dance music issued from the speakers. A spectacular light show started up as everyone headed out, Mark waving as he headed to grab his own man.
"Wanna dance?" asked the prince of his love.
"If you want to," came the reply.
A grin. "I don't." Laughing he pulled his love towards a darkened section of the wall, standing him there as he began to kiss him passionately. His hand was over Julius' head as his mouth found the man's lips, then his neck. "Oh, I love you," he muttered. "At last, we're married...."
"Um, should we be doing this right here with everyone to watch?" asked Julius meekly as his lover kissed him, surrounding him in love.
He laughed. "Mr. Timid now, are we?" A long kiss. "Fuck what they think, we're in love here. You're my prisoner anyways, so you're not getting away."
"Sounds good to me," came the reply. An inward sigh as Barrel teased his tongue with his own, his lips soon sliding down his neck. "That feels wonderful love, a little to the right...down a little...mmmm....."
"Can't wait to get you in bed, what a night it's gonna be." He removed the bow tie and undid a few buttons, tossing it aside as he began to kiss his chest. "All night long, I swear it!"
A little smile as Julius kissed his lover's head. "Well, you're going to have to wait for it. Obviously we can't just start making love on the table or anything."
"Which really sucks."
"My, you two look quite cozy over here!" came a voice suddenly. The two didn't bother to look, knowing who it was. The only man who'd barge in during a moment like this. They didn't quit what they were doing.
"Hello, Mark," muttered Barrel as he kissed Julius' chest and undid a few more buttons.
"Howdy," he smiled as the two men finally stopped their kissing. They just stood there now, relaxing in each other's arms against the wall, the prince with his head on Julius's bare skin. "Actually Barrel's father sent me over here, he didn't want to barge in himself. He wanted to know if you wanted the limo driver to come back, or if you'll be taking your own car to the hotel tonight."
"Tell him..." trailed Barrel. "Tell him to get his ass over here, that's what you can tell him. If he wants to ask me something he can come over himself. Would you mind doing that?"
A shrug. "No prob. See ya, guys."
"Yeah," they chorused.
Barrel sighed as he held his love. "I hate when they do that, make me feel so evil. I know none of them mean to, certainly not Jack, but still...."
"Shhhh," Julius soothed him. "It's alright, he doesn't know. You can try telling him if you wish."
"I should, yeah. Perhaps I will." He smiled softly, kissing his husband gently as his lips traced their way down his neck.
"Oh, Barrel," came the sigh as he tilted back his head. "What a wonderful man you are. So perfect in every way...handsome, reliable, trustworthy...plus you're great in bed."
"So are you, love," came the muffled reply. "And now we're finally married and we'll get to spend the rest of our lives together."
A little moan from Julius. "Oh....christ that feels wonderful....mmm....my beloved Barrel, never change on me...fuck that feels good...." A gasp as he bite his nipple gently. "Jesus, you're sweet..."
"Uh....son?" came a familiar voice suddenly. "I...ah...got the message."
The prince and his lover parted now, Julius giving his love a tender kiss before gathering his bow tie and heading off. He wanted to give the two men a chance to speak.
"Yeah, you had a question?" Barrel asked his father now.
"I was just wondering if you wanted the limo to come back for you or if you'll be taking one of the rentals."
"Rental, please."
"Great, I'll be off then," the once-king proclaimed as he turned around, moving as if to make a hasty getaway.
"Hold on a minute there, old man, we're not done here," Barrel said. "I wanted to speak with you."
He turned back around, his cane tapping the ground slightly. "Yes...?"
Barrel motioned for the king to sit beside him as he sat at a table. He did so. "I want to make it quite clear to you, dad, that I don't want you doing that to me."
"Doing what?"
"Making me feel like an alien. Sending others over to speak to me. I don't want anyone to feel afraid of me because of the way I live, I really don't. And if my making out with Julius here in the dark discomforts you, then I'm sorry. But I'm not going to allow anyone to try and influence me with their opinions."
"I don't think I said one word to you, son," came the reply. "I had a question but I didn't want to interupt you. Hey, I had a wedding once too, you know. I remember sneaking off with Sally now and then so we could be alone." A silent grin as he remembered that, her hands on his body as they kissed passionately in the small and cramped maintenence closet. Her sweet lucious breasts, so tempting, the taste of them as he kissed them gingerlly. He shook these memories from his head as he directed his attention back to the current matter. "Barrel, never have I felt any discomfort regarding your gayness. Never have, never will. I'm proud of you, and I always will be." A smile. "I just wanted to give you some privacy without having dad cut in on you."
"You're telling me the truth, aren't you?" A nod. "Alright then. But don't worry, I'm not ashamed or embarrassed, as long as you're not." He paused, slowly grinning. "But now I finally understand where you were those times when no-one could find you during your wedding...with Sally."
An innocent smile. "I've no idea what you're talking about, son."
"No, course not. You were always real sweet on each other, as long as I've known you two to be together." A laugh. "You remember that time, one of the first days me and Shock and Lock were with you? We found you two downstairs? You thought we didn't know what you'd been up to on the couch but we did. You were covered in lipstick and Sally's dress wasn't quite right..."
Jack's skeletal face would have flushed red had he had blood. "How about we go now? Limbo contest is coming up soon, you've always been great at that."
A smile as they both rose, Barrel swinging an arm around his father. "Sure, old man. That sounds great." They began to head out towards the dance floor before Barrel spotted someone not far from him he wanted to talk to. "Hey, there she is!" he cried as he and Jack headed over to a woman standing alone. "The wonderful mother of my beautiful son."
Rachael blushed slightly as she turned around, accepting a friendly kiss. "Hello Barrel, hi Jack. Lovely wedding, it really is."
"Isn't it?" proclaimed the once-king.
A voice cut in through the music. "Jack Skellington, to the main table please, Jack Skellington to the main table."
He grinned. "That'd be me, I think it's Sally wondering about the limo thing. See you later."
"Ciao, pop." The once-king headed off, leaving the two. Silence for a second. "Rache, I'm really glad you came," Barrel said at last. "It didn't seem right for you not to, you being the mother of my child and all." A soft smile. "He's a beautiful lad, he really is. Smart too. You raised him well."
"I tried to give him good opportunities, I always encouraged him to strive for his best. He's gotten pretty far today, and I hope I had something to do with that."
A nod. "Oh, of course you did. I'm proud of you, the both of you." He touched her arm. "I want to thank you for allowing me to come into his life. For being so wonderfully approving of this..."
"Barrrel, I wanted so much for him to get to know you, all his life. I'm glad he has now. He's so pleased to have a father at last." A little smile. "And I'm proud his father was you. You're a great man, Julius is lucky."
"Ah, so am I," he replied with a nod. "He's a miracle to me, I can't believe I went this long without ever knowing him..." He trailed off before looking back at her. "It's so odd having you back again. A blast from the past, you know? The day Alex came to me and I saw you, I was totally in shock. The days we spent as a couple were great, they really were. I mean, you were always a great woman. Of all the women I've dated, you were always one of my favourites."
"Thanks," he smiled. "That means alot to me Barrel. It really does. I'm glad to have been invited to your wedding. Julius doesn't mind me being here, your old girlfriend?"
A laugh. "Goodness no!!! Besides, he wouldn't have had any choice but to allow you to come. You're the mother of my only son, Rache, we had a chid together. How could I leave you out?"
"Of course. What would any party be like without the likes of me to liven it up?"
"Yeah, I remember what a party animal you used to be. Bet you still are."
She winked at him. "You know it. And I'll prove it to you, I'm gonna head over to take part in that
limbo contest. See ya, Barrel."
He waved. "Later. I'll be off now then, go wandering a bit. Have a great time."

"Go Shandii!" cried Alex towards the center of the dance floor at a girl he knew. She was currently trying to get under the periliously low limbo stick, and having a bit of problems with it. She leaned over carefully as she tried to make her way along, tilting her head back. A cry of anticipation when she stumbled a bit, but she didn't fall--she made it out quite nicely. "Yeah! Good job!" he cried.
"That was really good," Janine said with a nod as she applauded. "Impressive."
"Yeah, compared to me. I got under it a total of 0.5 times."
A laugh. "Poor baby." Another girl was approaching the bar now, whom he recognized as one of his step-fathers friends. "Hey, have you seen my dad?" he asked his love suddenly. "I haven't seen him in a while..."
"Last I saw of him he was talking to your mother."
"He's not here now though...whatever, I'll see him later. Come on, let's go sit down." They took each other's hand as they headed to sit at their own table by the wall, Janine laying her head on Alex's shoulder. He smiled as he kissed her hair. "I'm proud of my dad, I really am. He did a lot to get here, I'm pleased for him. Obviously he and Julius are madly in love, which is really sweet. Despite the circumstances. I'm really glad we found each other again."
"I bet you are. Father and son, reunited at last. I'm pleased for the both of you. I know it means a lot to your dad to have you."
"Think so?"
"I know it, he's told me. You're both very lucky to have each other after all these years."
A little nod. "We are, aren't we?" He smiled, taking her hand into his own as he glanced out at the dance floor. The limbo was over now, and everyone was dancing again. There was Barrel out there, getting down with the beat. "Ah, there's the old man. He can sure dance up a storm, can't he?"
His girlfriend giggled. "He sure can."
He was silent for a moment, growing somewhat somber. "I love you, Janine," he said at last. "Very much."
She tilted her head towards him, allowing him to kiss her gently. "Mmm, I love you too darling. I always will."

Jack sat at the main table with his wife Sally, holding her small hand as they watched the activities. There was Barrel on the dance floor, taking the spotlight as usual. Shock and Ira were out there as well, so were Lock and Elizabeth. Alisa, Elizabeth, Drake and a bunch of other children were under the care of a daycare worker, hired to specially keep all the kids safe and entertained during the festivities tonight. Kyrene and Jacob were sitting by themselves, Jacob whispering into Kyrene's ear as she giggled in his arms. Alex and Janine meanwhile were seemingly quite cozy over at their table.
"Isn't it lovely?" sighed Sally as she rested her head on her aging husband's shoulder. "All these people, so much love in the air."
"Indeed," her love agreed. "I'm so proud of our son, I really am. He's come a long, long way. He and Julius are in true love indeed." A laugh. "They can hardly contain their passion for one another! Barrel had Julius pinned to the wall over there, and neither cared who saw them. I originally didn't want to barge in on them. You know, dad busting in and all. I sent Mark over but they didn't like that, sent him back with the message to get my ass over there."
"You went though?"
"Yeah, of course." A shrug. "But whatever, it's nice to see Barrel so happy."
Sally nodded. "It was so sad watching him lose one girlfriend after another, it really was. All his other siblings had such great luck with love. They're all happy now, that's great."
"I'm glad they're all content." A moment of silence as they sat there. "You know Sally, we've come a long, long way over the years," Jack said at last.
"Uh-huh," she agreed.
"240 years together and we're still as much as in love as the day we got married. I was actually remembering that night earlier on, remember sneaking away from everyone to go make out in the maintenance closet?"
A giggle. "Yeah, I can still recall that." She sighed. "You know Jack, I've never made love to another man besides you. In my whole life, you've been my only one."
"And you've been my best," he smiled. "I think there's something about sex with your one true love that makes it all the better, I honestly do." He gave her a kiss.
"Maybe," she shrugged.
He drew a hand through her long grey hair, smiling softly. "You're still a beautiful woman, Sally, age has never destroyed that. You aged so gracefully, you really did. Myself, I don't know how you can put up with a cripple like me. I hate this old cane, Sal, I really do..."
"Oh hush," she frowned as she kissed him. "Jack, you may not be the young man you were but I still love you. You're not a cripple, you just need assistance now and then. I know that having ruled as the pumpkin king for over 750 years has kind of taken away your ability to rely on others, but you have to learn how. In all our years together, you've never been able to be reliant on me."
"Oh, Sally, how much more wrong could you be?" he protested as he pulled out of their embrace. "I have always been very dependant on you, all my life. As my very life, my sanity, my everything. You know I'd be nothing if I didn't have you..."
"No no no, that's not what I meant," she replied. "I mean, you're a person who likes to do things on his own. You're very self-reliant, independant. You don't like having assistance, with anything. Walking, bathing, none of it."
"Well, that's probably true," he answered with a shrug. "I've always been like that I suppose..."
Sally smiled, allowing herself to sink back into his arms. "That's okay though, I still love you." A happy sigh as he kissed her head. "All this time, Jack, and I still love doing this. Just cuddling with you. You've always had the best arms for sinking into, it's so lovely to feel them around me."
"And it's good to have them around you." His lips kissed her cheek softly. "Thank-you Sally, for everything you've done for me. Become my wife, have my daughter, raise four wonderful children together, keep me from going mad..." He combed his long, skeletal finers thorugh her hair. "I couldn't have asked for any better."
A soft smile. "Neither could I, my love."

After a while it was time for the married couples first dance together. All friends and family came to gather at the side of the dance floor now, waiting for the right moment.
"Alright ladies and gents, here we go!" called the DJ. "Please give it up for Mr. Barrel and Julius Skellington!"
Thunderous applause as the two men appeared, beaming and radiant as they took to the floor. A disco ball appeared and little shiny dots were soon covering the room as a slow tune started up. Smiling Barrel allowed Julius to slip his arms around his waist, wrapping his own arms around the mans neck.
"This is so romantic," the prince sighed. "Our wedding, our first dance...how wonderful." A kiss. "I love you, Julius, have I told you that recently?"
"Yes, many times," came the chuckled reply as Julius returned the kiss. "I love you too, darling." Barrel rested his head on his lover's shoulder now, silent as they remained there like that.
They had hardly noticed that the song was over when someone nudged them, but apparantly it was. Time for the prince and his mother the former queen to take the floor. Julius kissed his love passionately before leaving the floor, whispering something into the other man's ear that only made him laugh.
"And now, make way for the wonderful Sally Skellington, who's going to be dancing now with her son Barrel," called the D.J. More music as Sally appeared through the crowd. A smile as Barrel put an arm around her small waist, taking her hand in his own as they started to dance.
"I'm really proud of you son," she told him. "You've found your mate, you're madly in love, and blissfully happy. I couldn't be more pleased, for both you and Julius. He's a lucky man to have found someone like you."
"Thanks, mom," he smiled. "You know, it means a lot to me that you and dad are accepting of my choice of life here. If either of you disapproved, I don't think I'd be able to cope with it."
"Course we do, dear. The moment we first heard, we knew that this was the right thing for you."
"Really?"
"Yes. We trusted your words wholeheartedly, we still do." A little smile as they glided across the dance floor. "Congratulations, son." She looked around the hall, saw the many brilliant faces lit up with joy as they watched the prince and his mother dancing now. "You really did a great job of throwing off this wedding, it's really a stunner..."
"Thanks. Me and Julius wanted it to be perfect."
"And it is," smiled Sally. "It's just wonderful."

Their dance ended a moment or two later; time now for Julius and his mother Leslie.
As the tune began to play the two made their way across the dance floor, Leslie's dress fluttering around her ankles.
"My son, you're a great dancer," she complemented him. "As good as your father was in his younger days."
"You think so? Cool." He smiled, his eyes wandering for a second to see Barrel. His love was over there chatting with his brother Lock, laughing merrily.
"He's a nice man," his mother said as if reading his thoughts. "That Barrel's a good lad, you made an excellent choice in choosing him."
"Yes I did, didn't I?" came the sighed reply. "It might seem a bit weird to you mother but I'm truly in love with him, I really am..."
"Ahhh, I understand," she told him. "I've done a lot of thinking over the years since you first told me you were gay and I think I can see now how two men can fall in love. I really do. And I strongly support this and all decision you've made in your life. I'm proud of you, boy."
He smiled at his mother, pleased. "Thanks mom. That means a lot to me."

Soon it was time for the newly wedded couple to be off. They bid their fareweels as they headed out the door, anxious to get to the hotel.
"So long everyone!" called Julius as he and his lover backed out of the building. "See you tommorrow!"
"Bye!" came a loud and unanimaous cry.
A delighted little smile from Julius as he grabbed Barrel's arm, dragging him outside and into the dark. There they found a car already pulled up and waiting for them, their overnight bags in them and ready to go. Shock was there just climbing out of the driver's side door, having unlocked the passenger's side.
"Ah, there you are," she smiled. "Your chairot awaits you."
"Thanks sis," Barrel smiled as he hopped into the empty drivers seat, closing the door and rolling down the window. "Have a great evening, sis."
"You too," she winked at him and his husband, who had just climbed into the car. "Don't get too wild."
"Don't worry, we will," cracked her brother. "So anyways, tommorrow we'll be quickly popping back home to grab our already packed suitcases before heading off to Ireland."
"That'll be an interesting honeymoon place," Shock said. "Ireland."
"Yeah," Julius piped. "We're gonna tour the country and stuff, see the old castles and touristy things like that. Fours days max."
"Well, have a great time," she smiled. "See you when you get back home then."
"Thanks, sis," Barrel replied as he stuck his hand out for her to shake it. She did, stepping back a bit as he started to roll up the window.
"Bye!" she called. "Have fun!"
"See ya," chorused the lovers as they started up the engine. They waved as they began to pull away, both men excited about the next couple of days. In a moment they were gone, tearing down the road towards the hotel they'd be staying in for the night.
A faint grin crossed Shock's face as she watched them disapear, hugging herself. They had finally gotten what they wanted, and were both happy. And thanks to them, many other men and women at this moment were probably just as content.
"You did a good thing by changing the law," came a voice suddenly. She turned around to see her nephew Alex.
"I think I did," she nodded. "They seem so happy, don't they? So content. I'm glad they found each other, they're a couple of great guys. I'm proud of them."
"So am I," came the reply as he placed an arm around her shoulder. A little smile. "Thanks, Aunt Shock, for being so great to me. For accepting me into your family and all. Between you, my father, and the rest of the Skellingtons, I really feel as if I belong somewhere, as if I really have a family at last."
"Oh, not a problem," she replied. "You're a great kid, you really are. Barrel loves you alot, he's delighted to have a son." She glanced over at him. "We're all very pleased that you became part of the family."
A little smile as they headed back towards the Hall. "Me too, Aunt Shock. Best thing that ever happened to me."
All was well in Halloween as they headed inside the reception area. Barrel and Julius had gotten their way, Alex had been united at last with his long-lost relatives, and not a soul had a care in the world. All that mattered currently to anyone was love, family, and life in itself; exactly the way it was meant to be.

THE END
