Berimbau

Berimbau

Originating from Angola, Africa and now Bahia in Northern Brazil, the Berimbau is used in "Capoeiria". the Brazilian Martial Arts.

The Berimbau is played by striking the string with a stick in the right hand, with a Caxixi over the fingers. Using the left hand, the small fingers holds the instruments, while a coin is used in the other fingers to change the pitch. The gourd resonator gives a "wha-wha" sound. These are made from selected hardwoods such as maple, walnut, oak, or hickory.
