Journeys: The Literary Magazine of the Summer Residential Program
Who am I?
by Marcela Avila
Summer Residential Writing Program StudentsOn the outside I’m Mexican
On the inside I’m me.
Not everything is skin deep.
When I walk into a room,
People look at me.
Some turn and others stay.
Those who stay are more than
skin,
Because skin is thin and the
inside
Is wide.
I’m human and have pride,
So I never have to hide.
So when you ask who I am,
I am who you want me to be
That is skin deep, but who I
really am
Is me.
Mexican, black, white, it’s just a
cover,
But if you go inside,
That’s what counts.
Tall, fat, thin, who cares, it’s
about within.
So again you ask who I am.
I am you but only me.
