of Central Kalimantan

SIZE OF CENTRAL KALIMANTAN Central Kalimantan Province cover 153,800 sqkms or 28% from the total size of Kalimantan or 8% from the total size of land area of Indonesian archipelago, the total size of Central Kalimantan to include: Forest 126,200 sqkms, rivers, lakes, and lagoons 4,563 sqkms, and others 4,686 sqkms. Administrativelly, Central Kalimantan consist of five regencies and one municipality, they are: West Kotawaringin Regency covers 21,000 sqkms, East Kotawaringin Regency with the width of area is 50,700 sqkms, North Barito Regency with the total area is 32,200 sqkms, and Palangkaraya municipality covers 2,400 sqkms, it's also consists of seven sub-regencies and eighty-two Kecamatan. POPULATION Dayak tribe is the original inhabitants of Central Kalimantan. According to some anthropoligists that the Dayak is originated from a group of emigrants from Yunnan, South China, during the ice Age. The first emigrant group come to Kalimantan where Negrid and Weddid which are considered not exis any longer. The second emigrant group was called Proto-Malay. It is believed that this group was as the ancestors of the Dayak. The emigration happened more than one thousand years, in the year of 3,000 until 1,500 B.C. The third emigrant Group was Deotero-Malay, it took place in the year of 500 B.C. This group was considered as the ancestors of the third coastal inhibitants of Kalimantan. The Dayak of Central Kalimantan is clasified into three big ethnic groups, they are : Dayak Ngaju, Dayak Ot Danum, and Dayak Ma'anyan. Further-more, each of these sub-ethnic group such as ; LAWANGAN, DUSUN SIANG, TEWOYAN, BAYAN, BENTIAN, DOHOI, KADORIH, etc. Each of these sub-ethnic group has their own language as their lingua-franca. At the present day, Central Kalimantan is not only inhabited by the Dayak but also inhabited by many ethnic groups from out side of the Central Kalimantan such as from Java, Sulawesi, Madura, Sumatera, South Kalimantan, and another islands of Indonesia. Total population of Central Kalimantan in 1989 was 1,337,110 and the average growth is 2.5% per year.
