Sailing the Bermuda Triangle

A strange thing happened while anchored on the west side of Key Biscayne, Florida, preparing to cross the Gulf Stream to the Bahamas for the second time. We had agreed to consult with the VHF weather channel W1 out of Miami, Fla. one more time before settling in for some rest before a very early departure. The date was June 1, 1995 (the first day of hurricane season), the weather looked promising, leaving Key Biscayne at approximately 1 AM would give us the 11 AM arrival time at the Gun Cay lighthouse, good light for entering the cut, as there are no navigational markers, and good visability is essential for negotiating the channels and reefs.

But as we listened to the weather reports we were astounded to hear that a "tropical storm warning" had been issued... What was this? We had viewed all available weather including the aviation weather which aired early every morning on PBS TV, and there was NO mention of any tropical development of any kind. Mind you, that this was just hours before our departure and had us feeling very concerned. The announcer went on to say to stay advised for more updates on "Tropical Storm Gordon". Was this out of the "Twilight Zone" or what? Tropical Storm Gordon developed, and the eye of which went directly over us while anchored in Key West back on November 14, 1994 !!!!

I have heard of radio transmissions being caught in some kind of time warp, I believe the Queen Mary or the Queen Elizabeth received a radio transmission that was sent to her while somewhere in the Atlantic, the problem was the message had been sent something like 40 years earlier.

I would appreciate hearing from any other sailors who might have experienced any kind of strange VHF transmissions. Please feel free to e-mail !!!
