CONFERENCE REPORT

Sessions will include:-
Workers' struggles in the context of industrial restructuring and Structural Adjustment;
Globalisation, the nation state, militarisation and refugees;
Communalism (religious sectarianism) and fascism in the context of globalisation;
Gender and identity in South Asia and the diaspora:
Caste, class and democratic rights;
Relationship between people's movements and NGOs;
Globalisation and South Asian culture and art;
Changing nature of racism in the context of the New World Order;
The Left in South Asia and strategies for the future.

This unique conference will bring together key academics and activists from India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka, Europe and North America to discuss not only the effects of globalisation on South Asia but to examine the intense organised struggles waged by powerful people's movements which are currently a feature of all South Asian countries.

Speakers and participants will examine the new strategies and theoretical approaches emerging in those movements, and the identities of class, caste, gender or nationality which are being heightened and reshaped through these struggles.
