Installing Flasher Turn Signals

- By Pete Snidal (C) 2003
Turn Signals can be installed on a motorcycle with their own separate wiring harness, tied alongside the main one. There are few components required, and not much in the way of wires.

Components Required

A Word On Flashers

There are many kinds of automotive flashers. Some are very finely-tuned to the load of the lights in the system, so that they won't flash, or indicate, if a bulb is burnt out. If you use one of these, you'll have to buy one that is for the specific load of your bulb combination.

Fortunately, there are also "Heavy-Duty" flashers. These will flash over a much wider range of loads, and are therefore simpler to design a system around. They will not, however, provide any indication of bulbs not working properly.

There are also "2 terminal" and "3 terminal" flashers. The third terminal is for an indicator light, which will flash when the signals do. This may also be used to drive a small piezo-electric buzzer, obtainable at your electronic supply store.

Installing Turn Signals

Once you've made all the connections, routing the wires carefully, test the circuits. Turn on the ignition, and try the handlebar switch for both directions. Once performance has been ensured, wrap the wires with electrical tape into a loom, starting at the rear and working forward. You may wish to snap-tie this loom to your frame and/or your main wiring harness.
