BEAR HUNTING IN THE ALGOMA WILDERNESS!!
This page is being updated March 20, 1999. "THE SPRING BEAR HUNT HAS BEEN CANCELLED UNTIL WE CAN GET THE FOOLS (CURRENT GOVERNMENT OFFICIALS) OUT OF OFFICE OR NORTHERN ONTARIO CAN VOTE AND BECOME THE NEXT PROVINCE IN CANADA. PLEASE EVEN IF YOU DO NOT HUNT BEAR, BUT FISH OR HUNT OTHER SPECIES DO NOT BE COMPLACENT. YOU MUST WRITE LETTERS, EDUCATE NON HUNTERS TO THE CYCLE OF LIFE AND MAN'S HUNTING OTHER SPECIES AS PART OF THIS CYCLE. YOU CANNOT SIT BACK AND THINK THIS IS NOT GOING TO IMPACT YOUR USE OF THESE NATURAL RESOURCES. IF YOU FISH, HUNT, SNOWMOBILE, USE MOTORIZED PLEASURE CRAFT YOU ARE ALSO A TARGET OF THESE FANATICS. If you know all about this Ontario Bear Hunt fiasco just scroll down to bypass the following.
This next section was posted January 19, 1999. Just a few days ago the Ontario Government currently in power decided that they would end the spring bear hunt. What is even more disturbing is the decision to do so is not going to be phased in. If you have a reservation for spring hunting call the establishment you are registered with for more information. The various organizations that speak for hunters in Canada will be addressing this issue in hopes that it can be reversed, or barring that get it phased in over a few years. At the very least phase this closure in over a year. If you are an Ontario resident write your MPP and protest this irrational act.Last fall it became very clear how many bears there are in the north. Before this past fall as an operator I was wondering how long the bear population could sustain the current harvest numbers. The blueberry crop in the fall was non-existent and because of this the bears were very hungry and started looking for food in populated areas. Many bears had to be shot as nuisances. Even with so many bears in the towns our remote baits were being hit regularly.
In 1978 my six year old son was attacked by a mother bear who was hanging around the camp with her two cubs. The cubs were in the dining room. My son walked in, saw the cubs, didn't see the mother, but figured she must be in there with them. As small as he was he just felt he had better get our of there not realizing she was waiting behind him. He took off on a run to tell me about the situation. The bear's instincts took over and she raced after him knocking him down and biting him repeatedly as she was dragging him off into the bush. Yes he lived, but it took well over 100 stitches and many hours on the table to stitch him up.
My point here is these are not animals that you can trust to live next to you without experiencing attacks on people. They are wild animals, they do not think like humans, they do not live like humans. Walt Disney's "Lion King" is make believe. Lions do not talk to one another in English or any other language, they do not have human emotions. Male lions will kill offspring from another male. They do not make sure their kill is dead before they eat it. As lions are so are bears, and to think otherwise could mean the death of the person thinking this way.
The reasoning behind closure of the spring bear hunt is that mother bears with small cubs are sometimes mistakenly shot and the cubs orphaned. This does not happen often as it is against the law to shoot a mother bear with cubs in the spring. All of the outfitters in this area stress the need for hunters to wait to be sure whether or not the bear they are about to shoot has cubs. It is a good thing to protect the mothers with cubs, but I do not believe that closing the spring hunt for this reason is valid. Decisions like the one the Ontario government just made should be made by the people who live and work in the area. People who are aware of the health of the bear population
I would like to add here that bears have regularly been hanging around since my son was mauled, and they are left alone if they do not show aggressive tendencies. Perhaps if we had children in camp we would have to shoot them, but most of the time we have dogs on bear watch detail. So open season was not declared on bears since the attack.
When bears become a nuisance are the people in southern Ontario going to accept these animals into their cities and towns?
