V - Patterned Cable Teddy Sweater
For 16-19" Bears
Material: approx. 3 oz. knitting worsted wt. yarn, #7 straight and circular needles, cable needle, stitch markers
Gauge: #7 needle or size required to obtain 5 sts and 6 rows=1 inch.
Front: Using #7 needles, cast on 44 st. K1 P1 for 8 rows.
Work first two rows of cable pattern as follows: (stitch abbreviations
explained at the end of pattern)
Row 1: K16, place stitch marker, P4, C4F, P4, place another stitch marker, K16.
Row 2: P16, K4, P4, K4, P16.
Continue in stockinette stitch for 16st. on EACH SIDE
of the following cable stitch pattern for the remainder of the front,
repeating rows 3-9 until piece measures the desired length
to fit the bear's torso (about 8 in.), and ending on row 9. (see note below on casting off)
Row 3: P3, C3b, C3f, P3.
Row 4: K4, P4, K4.
Row 5: P2, C3b, P2, C3f, P2.
Row 6: K4, P4, K4.
Row 7: P1, C3b, p4, C3f, P1.
Row 8: K4, P4, K4.
Row 9: C3b, P1, C4f, P1, C3f.
Next row: Cast off 6 stitches at beginning of row, place next 32 stitches on holder,
cast off last 6 stitches.
Back: Using #7 needles, cast on 44 st. K1, P1 for 8 rows.
Continue in stockinette stitch (Knit 1 row, Purl 1 row)
until piece measures the same as the front.
Next row: Cast off 6 stitches at beginning of row, place next 32 stitches on holder, cast off last 6 stitches.
Sleeve: Cast on 38 st. K1, P1 for 6 rows.
[At this point, if you wish to omit the simple cable on the sleeve, you may knit in
stockinette stitch until the sleeve is the desired length
(about 4") and then cast off.]
Continue in stockinette stitch for 16st. on EACH SIDE
of the following cable stitch pattern for the remainder of the sleeve,
placing stitch markers 16 stitches from each end of sleeve.
Row 1: K6
Row 2: P6
Row 3: K6
Row 4: P6
Row 5: C6f
Row 6: P6
Repeat rows 1-6 until piece measures the desired length (about 4in.),
ending
on a row 6, remembering to knit in stockinette stitch
for 16st. on EACH SIDE of the above cable pattern.
Cast off.
Put the 32 st from the front and the 32 st from the back onto the circular needle,
being sure pieces both have the front facing out.
(wrong sides together)
Place a stitch marker. Knit K1 P1 rib in the round for 5 rows.
Bind off next row in rib pattern.
Sew shoulder,sleeve and side seams. Weave in loose ends.
C3b: sl 1 st to cable needle and hold at back,
k2, k st from cable needle
C3f: sl 2 sts to cable needle and hold at front,
p1, k2 from cable needle.
C4b: sl 2 sts to cable needle and hold at back,
k2, k2 from cable needle.
C4f: sl 2 sts to cable needle and hold at front,
k2, k2 from cable needle.
C6f: sl 3 sts to cable needle and hold at front, k3, k3 from cable needle.
