Personal Profile.
Allan James, the proud father of two tremendous sons, Sean and Aaron, was born in
Invercargill, June 1945. Allan spent his first 16 years on his parents
farm near Dacre, before completing his education at Southland Technical
College, and moving to Invercargill to start an apprenticeship as an Electrical
Fitter with the Southland Electrical Power Supply. He attended additional
study courses outside his employment and qualified as a Registered Electrician
with one of the highest pass marks in New Zealand in 1967.
During this time, at age 21, Allan volunteered for service in the
Territorial Force of the New Zealand Army, beginning a military career
in the Royal New Zealand Transport Corp progressing through a number of
increasingly responsible training and management positions and culminating
in his being responsible for the training and operational control of the
Ambulance and General Transport of 3 Medical Battalion, based at Addington
Barracks, Christchurch. In 1982 was decorated for his 18 years of service
to the New Zealand Army. He reached his retiring age for rank, and left
the Army in 1989.
Allan's electrical career paralleled his military one as he moved
through a number of increasing responsible positions, primarily in the
heavy construction industry ( Pulp and Paper Mills and ancillary equipment),
until in 1974 he was appointed Electrical Project Manager for a major Electrical
Contractor, responsible directly to the Board of Directors for the successful
conduct of several major multi-disciplinary Pulp And Paper projects in
areas remote from the companies home base. During this period Allan also
qualified as a Private Pilot, rated for a number of single engined light
aircraft, an interest he still follows, now, however, in Microlight Sports
Aviation aircraft.
Allan decided to move to Christchurch in 1997, to provide the opportunity
for his sons to gain an education without the disruption of moving from
project to project every couple of years, and to give them access to Polytech
and University facilities. He joined the Ministry of Works as a Contracts
Overseer responsible for major projects, mainly on military bases (surprise
<grin.>), and remained with them for seven years. Allan also attended
Massey university during this time gaining a qualification in Business
& Personnel Management. He elected to leave 'Works' during the restructuring
of the organisation in 1990 - 1992, starting his own home based electrical
contracting business shortly afterwards. This business continues to operate
very successfully, expanding into Inspection and Energy Management along
the way.
Allan is active in the community, is a Member of 'Business Grow Christchurch',
a small business support agency, and is a previous Chairman of one of the
first Computer Users Groups in Christchurch. He is also active internationally
and has a goal to support 10 children in deprived circumstances, providing
the financial and other support to allow them to rise above their current
circumstances.
Allan has a passion for, and continues to practice, Personal Development.
He is particularly active in helping people to achieve their full potential,
both personally and financially, through raising their Self-Esteem and
by the application of Success, Goal Setting and Co-Operative Free Enterprise
principles.
