Accomodation

Built during 1997 in a style of its own and most certainly one of the best looking homes in the area. The roof is of tradional thatch from this area. The three en-suites are situated on the top floor, under thatch with exposed wooden beams. Two rooms offer a spectacular view accross the estuary, the mouth and part of St. Sebastiaan Bay. The third with an excellent view across the wheatlands, towards the Langeberg Mountain Ranges. A south facing balcony lends a view over the river mouth and up river with a north facing balcony overlooking the garden,  wheatlands with the Langeberg Mountain in a distance. Breakfast is taken in the breakfast room  overlooking the Estuary and river mouth.

Situation

Witsand/Port Beaufort is situated 300km from Cape Town at the mouth of the Breede River. Only three hours drive along the Garden Route (N2) to about 3km outside Heidelberg. From where R322 will bring you to this nearly forgotten little fishing village of Witsand/Port Beaufort.

Witsands situation lends itself as a base to spend three to four days and explore the surrounding 200km, full of exciting venues. Places of interest inlude: Arniston/Waenhuiskrans, Agulhas (the most southern point of Africa), the wine route of Bonnievale; Ashton; Robertson; Montagu and Barrydale; the hotwater springs at Montagu, Barrydale and Calitzdorp; Mountain trial at Swellendam, Groot Vaderbos and Riversdale the almost unknown Hamlet of Puntjie at the mouth of the Duivenhoks river, a six kilometre walk to the Moodies Putte (wells) along  a stretch of beach unequeled in South Africa, the last hand operated pontoon (pont) in Southern Africa at Malagas.

Entertainment

Swimming: Beautiful white beaches, safe swimming either river or sea.

Watersport: Surfing - board or body, wind surfing in sea or estuary, yachting, water-skiing upriver, boating, canoeing and paddle skiing.

Whalewatching: During the months of May till November, St. Sebastiaan boast with the biggest concentration of Southern Right Whales in the world.

Birdwatching: Large variety of sea waders and scrub birds. The river is a home to an amazing wealth of wetland birds, including the majestic Fish Eagle, Osprey and Kingfisher.

Fishing/Angling: Witsand is one of the last angling paradises of South Africa. Deap sea angling results in good catches being made on regular basis. The river is well known for catches of the big Cob (100 pounders are often caught), Garrick, Steenbras, Grunter, Shad and large variety of smaller species.

Walks: Kilometres of Beautiful white beaches to enjoy, hectares of Flora(Fynbos) to explore.
