Sandra Stanton
Sandra started out as a social realist painter over 30 years ago, motivated
by the images of her surroundings in native New York City. The theme of her
work evolved into classical mythology, from urban settings to post-nuclear
holocaust sunrise backgrounds. She is inspired by the works of Merlin Stone,
Marija Gimbutas, Barbara Walker and other women's spirituality scholars.
Sandra's art projects a positive future for the planet through respect for
the earth and all living beings, a paradigm set forth by many of the ancient
civilizations that saw the world as an interconnected web.
Sandra studied at the Art Students League from 1967-1974 and graduated from
Pace University cum laude in 1969. Her work has been widely exhibited and
published. She moved to Farmington, Maine in 1989 to enjoy the great beauty
and peace of the woods.
The paintings are done in a Venetian technique, popular during the Renaissance.
A process that utilizes an underpainting with layers of varnish and pigment
(glazes) built up over it. The layers of oil glaze are transparent, letting
light reflect off the underpainting beneath.
The paintings and their myths can be viewed on The Goddess in World Mythology
