Doing The Time

Every morning it's the same old thing,

birds start screaming and the clock begins to ring,

my eyes crack open and the world comes pouring in,

there's no way out,

gotta get up again.

Ease the covers off and step down real slow,

don't ask me why because I guess I'll never know,

put on the uniform,

get deaf, dumb, and blind,

and while away the hours,

looking for a kind one.

And then the burdens gone,

the chains are off of me,

won't jump through the hoop no more,

won't rent my liberty,

ask what price freedom and you know you only find,

if you want emancipation,

then you gotta do the time

Don't ask where it began,

or how it all got started,

to me so long ago this wisdom was imparted,

don't tote that bail,

pinch those pennies,

scrimp, and save,

can't bring no credit rating with you to the grave.
