The Surrey Teachers On Call Association is currently reorganizing themselves so as to assist their membership, which ranges from 300-1000, to be better represented in Surrey and at the provincial level.
The chairperson of the STA TOC Association is elected at the STARA AGM in May of each year. You can leave a message for him/.her at the STA Office 604-594-5353.
The Surrey Teachers Organization website at http://www.surreyteachers.org/aboutus.cfm provides the following information on the STA and its work for Surrey Teachers and Students.
Working for Surrey Teachers for more than 50 years.
The Surrey Teachers' Association has a proud tradition of fighting for teachers' rights and a better education system for our children.
Today, with more than 4500 members in 139 schools and educational institutions in Surrey, the Surrey Teachers' Association is the largest union of teachers in British Columbia. But when STA first began, it had only a handful of members in just a few schools with no job security and no collective agreement. Now we represent thousands of teachers in K to 12 and adult learning centres. Today, our members provide quality education to over 60,000 students in Surrey.
STA Members work together to provide the best possible service to their students, their colleagues and their community.
The STA is a local of the BCTF and has primary responsibility for enforcing the collective agreement in matters involving STA members and our local school board. School staff representatives, an elected Grievance Committee and elected officers have primary responsibility for ensuring that the negotiated rights and benefits of STA members are respected.
The STA also has a strong commitment to promoting quality public education and the professional development of teachers and other STA members. We have an active district professional development committee which works with the school board and our colleagues in helping to provide a broad range of professional development activities for all STA members. We also work with the district in providing a mentoring program for new teachers and serve jointly with parents, trustees and administrators on District committees on a wide range of educational issues.
The STA also works closely with the Surrey community in areas such as our Books for Babies program, support for Surrey Memorial Hospital (Children's Ward), our annual holiday Surrey Food Bank Turkey fund and in providing information to the public and the media about the realities of public education in Surrey. We also have a committed network of social justice committees who work in areas such as combating homophobia and heterosexism, promoting the status of women, promoting multicultural education and opposing racism, working with the labour movement and addressing issues of corporate control of education. In addition, the STA provides thousands of dollars in scholarships and bursaries to deserving students throughout the district. Some scholarships are provided exclusively to the daughters and sons of STA members.
The Surrey Teachers' Association is a union of professionals working for their members and their community.
