Sarajevo, October 18:
Debate "Media and Peace Building in South-East Europe"

We organized a debate within the First University of Communications in SE Europe on the role of media in reconciliation.

Media played a significant role in instigating conflicts in SE Europe. The issue we raised dealt with the role of media in peace and trust building in societies devastated by recent wars. Within the context, the role and capacity of media in redefining relations between communities and cultures was also discussed. Transition from destructive to constructive ways of mediation was recognized as an essential step forward toward a society of tollerance.

In addition to the key note speaker, Mr. Jakob Finci, the following participants took part in the debate: Drago Pilsel (Croatia), Milan Vego (Croatian radio HB, Mostar), Hari Stajner (Yugoslavia), Natasa Tesanovic (ATV Banja Luka), Vladimir Bilic (OBN Sarajevo), Esad Kocan (Monitor, Podgorica).

The large audience got quite involved in the disucssion and the session was prolonged for an additional hour.
