Chapter One
“Regina! Guess what?” Cara asked her 10-year-old best friend, Regina Willstead. She jumped on her bed, next to Regina’s, in their room.
“What?” Regina said half-heartedly, too tired to care about anything.
Since the cancer had started spreading, she had often been too tired to care about anything. The only thing that ever cheered her up was listening to music. It just absorbed her. She fell into the music, and it just seemed to absorb her. The other people in the children’s ward in the hospital often came over to listen with her, or complain that she had no taste in music, depending upon who it was.
“Well, we might, might, might, MIGHT be able to get tickets to the Backstreet Boys concert,” Cara replied.
“WHAT?” Regina cried, suddenly feeling a lot more awake and sitting up in her bed. “How? Those ticket sold out, in like, TWO MINUTES!”
“Well… I don’t know if I should tell you, since you’re being so grumpy and all…” Cara said mischievously.
“Puh-leeze? Oh, come ON!”
“Fine, fine. You knew I was going to tell you anyway…”
“Just COME ON!”
“Alright, chill. Well, remember my cousin Lila?”
“Yeah… What does she have to do with this?”
“Guess where she works!”
“You know, I’m getting very tired of this game very fast. JUST TELL ME!”
“Honestly, just CHILL OUT. Well, she works at… Dum da da dum… Ticketmaster!”
“Get out! Seriously?”
“Yeah! But… she says not to get your hopes up. There’s no guarantee she can get us the tickets, but—“
“Who cares? As long as there’s the SLIGHTEST CHANCE!”
“Well, she may not be able to get tickets, but she knows a lot of people with connections and all… She says to cross your fingers.”
“Cross my FINGERS? Hell, I’m crossin’ my toes!” Regina answered, suddenly feeling refreshed. THE FREAKIN’ BACKSTREET BOYS, FER CRYIN’ OUT LOUD!
