News on Mariah

Mariah Carey, tossing her 'tude at the Bistro at Bacara, the posh Santa Barbara resort. Leisurely loungers couldn't not notice M.C., who sported shades indoors at night, perched low on her nose, as she yakked with a female friend. Meanwhile, an enormous, leather-clad goombah kept watch on the pair. Wonder if Mariah saw those hot hipsters grabbing their sunglasses and mocking the diva? Probably not, considering how she paraded out of the joint. Quite unlike Sylvester Stallone, purchasing pricey and sugary provisions at Edelweiss, a fancy-schmancy chocolate boutique. Bev Hills. With two dudes who helped him select Valentine's Day confections. S.S. looked youthful in a rust suede jacket and black trousers. Not a smidge of snootiness. Sly patiently waited in a 20-person line, until the store's owner scooted over and whisked him away. [Source: E! Online. Eminem song to be released as a single

picture of the hug couple aren't calling it quits just yet. Eminem's hotly debated duet with Elton John at this week's Grammys is turning up on radio stations across the country, and the Recording Academy and Interscope Records are making plans to release the live "Stan" as a benefit single, an academy spokesperson said Friday (February 23). A portion of the proceeds will benefit MusiCares, established by the academy in 1989 to offer emergency financial assistance and addiction recovery programs to musicians. However, Eminem's Interscope spokesperson said there were "no plans [for a commercial release] on this end." The academy serviced the rendition to radio stations via satellite, and the tune has found its way onto Napster. Among the stations that are playing the song are hip-hop's Power 106 (KPWR-FM) in Los Angeles and KMEL-FM in San Francisco. Under a hail of controversy for perceived homophobia and misogyny in his lyrics, Eminem turned in the Grammys' most talked-about performance when he joined forces with the gay John on "Stan." Em ended the performance by embracing John, and then raised his middle fingers to the crowd. "If I didn't make a statement with Elton John tonight, I don't know what else to do," Eminem told MTV News' Kurt Loder following the ceremony. Eminem swept all of the hip-hop Grammy categories, including Best Rap Album for The Marshall Mathers LP, but lost the Album of the Year award to Steely Dan's Two Against Nature. The academy spokesperson said she did not know whether sales from the live "Stan" will benefit any charities or organizations other than MusiCares.Music's most controversial couple aren't calling it quits just yet. Although muscle-bound vocalist Shifty Shellshock can't seem to keep a shirt on his back, he's not having any trouble keeping his band on the road.

With their debut album, The Gift of Game, hovering in the top 20 of the Billboard 200 albums chart some 17 months after its October 1999 release, Shellshock and crew have lined up a headlining tour beginning April 17 in Mesa, Arizona, according to a band spokesperson. Less than a month after that tour wraps up May 19 in Chicago, it's off to Ozzfest, where the group will perform on the main stage along with headliners Black Sabbath, Marilyn Manson, Slipknot and Papa Roach (see "Crazy Town Join Ozzfest").

The Hollywood-based septet will augment its 22-city trek with two newcomers — Stereomud, whose debut album, Perfect Self, is due May 15, and Memphis maulers Saliva, whose second LP, Every Six Seconds, will drop Tuesday.

Crazy Town recently taped a performance in Cancun, Mexico, for MTV's spring break coverage, where they treated sun-drenched, party-primed vacationers to the new song "Refused," which may appear on their next album.

Though the platinum The Gift of Game has been one of the hottest rock records of the year, the band says it has already written 10 songs for a forthcoming follow-up (see "Crazy Town Adopt 'Revolving Door' Attitude").

The shiny suits, glittering ice and Bentleys that helped make Puff Daddy famous will have no place in the brave new world of P. Diddy.

Sean Combs said Wednesday that his days of flaunting his lifestyle are over — at least in his songs and videos.

"We used to talk about wanting to get some money, but that's when hip-hop was based on your dreams and your fantasy," Combs said. "The whole thing now is the dreams and fantasies were achieved, and you don't want to make it the focal point," Combs said. "You can't keep beating that dead horse. ... That was a time for us — there are different eras in the dynasty. We had our bling-bling era."

The recently released video for G-Dep's "Let Get It" — which simply finds Combs, G-Dep and Black Rob rapping and dancing against a white background — illustrates Bad Boy's future style, Combs said. "You're gonna see from our videos, even our latest video, that it's all about the performance — the performance, the attitude and the dancing."

After seeing the impact the "bling-bling era" — encapsulated in "It's All About the Benjamins" and other Puffy hits — had on hip-hop and youth culture, Combs said that he hopes that he can use his music to send messages that are "more positive" and less materialistic. But he said he hopes fans can understand the difference between the Puff Daddy or P. Diddy persona and Sean Combs.

"There's a way to do it so that's not the only image they see. No matter what in life, there has to be balance," Combs said. "So I got to be responsible for my own image and making sure that it has balance and that you see the many sides of P. Diddy."

Combs told MTV News of his name-change plans Wednesday, during his first on-camera interview since his acquittal on gun possession and bribery charges (see "Puff Daddy Says You Should Now Call Him P. Diddy")

Predictably, comedians have jumped on that announcement with glee. Comedy Central's "The Daily Show" suggested that Combs made the change so that he could begin sampling his own old albums, and David Letterman suggested alternate names in a top-10 list.

Among Letterman's suggestions: "Puff Boy-Ar-Dee," "Howdy Diddy," "Milk Duddy," "P. Blicity Stunt" and "J. Lonely."
