A Swedish New Years

For New Years I joined two Finnish friends, driving to the lovely town of Uppsala, Sweden. Uppsala is "Sweden's Cradle," an historic university town slightly smaller than Tampere. A riverfront and beautiful streets, a majestic cathedral, rich Viking and medieval history, lots of energy... Uppsala may have become my favorite Nordic town.
We came for a New Years conference at Livets Ord, a thriving church in Uppsala. It was amazing, a New Years I will never forget. Seen here is the celebration as we welcomed 2003! Ella and Timo, the two friends I joined for the trip. All the pipes froze in our cabin, so though we were having fun perhaps we weren't always so "shower-fresh."
We spent our last day in Stockholm, Timo and Ella doing research in their archives. I ventured out alone, finding a tremendous surprise - the water in the bay had frozen strong enough to stand on! Stockholm is laid out on a set of islands, and with the water frozen I could walk from one to another. Others were skiing across the surface, a family walked their dog, and kids carved out little ice rinks.
In a part of the ice too thin to walk across, a boat broke through as it traveled. It was a surreal experience, walking across a seemingly endless world of ice. Just the second day of the new year, I was reminded of how awesome and vast is the potential for this next year.
