"Fury"

Doctor/7 Rating: 0

Kes returns to Voyager with a vengeance. Hmm… An interesting idea. With the right plot line, it could have made for a classic episode. The final result, however, proved to be less than desirable.

After seeing “Fury”, a number of questions came to mind; Who?, What?, Where?, When?, and most importantly, WHY? Why was Kes so vindictive, why was she so quick to change her attitude in the end, and WHY was this episode even allowed to air?? It is so full of discrepancies and errors that one is left to wonder, ‘Just who is writing this stuff?’.

First big discrepancy; if the old Kes went back in time about six years to kidnap herself, that would place it sometime in the early first season. At the end, when the old Kes is about to go back in time using the warp core, Janeway plays the holographic recording of the young Kes, and says she recorded it three years ago. If so, she would have recorded it sometime in the third season. Why wait so long? Plus, wasn’t her hair long then?

Another qualm I have with this episode also involves hair. Back in the first season, Chakotay had shorter, gray-tinged hair. I know there’s not much they can do about it, but still… Also, Ensign Wildman wore her hair up in the first Season. Didn’t anyone remember?

In Season One, Tuvok had not yet received his promotion to Lieutenant Commander. He should have only had two pips in his Season One scene. And he’s only 100? That’s news to me. Hasn’t he been around a lot longer than that?

Jennifer Lien looked tired and heavier even in her role as the young Kes.

Okay, so Kes was mad when she came back. But why? What happened to her in the last three years to make her so bitter? The writers should have spent more time developing her motives. They seem to have gone the way of the Borg baby in “Collective”; the victim of ‘not enough time left to discuss this’.

It seems as if the writers ran out of time and summed up the ending in about two minutes, as they have so often done before. This episode seemed very rushed and not well thought out.

Another discrepancy I noticed was with the Doctors character. In the First Season he was not nearly as well-mannered as was portrayed in “Fury”.

I must admit that even if no one else did, Kate Mulgrew did a good job of playing her Season One self.

Even with the interesting premise and a few enjoyable moments, “Fury” was, at best, a mediocre episode. It was clearly not one of the best of the Season.

Bottom Line: What could have been a wonderful return episode for Kes was a major disappointment.
