The children’s science fair during the teaser was pretty cute. It was interesting to see what each of the kids had made. Janeway’s comments were pretty silly.
The Icheb/Doctor scene in Sickbay was good. The Doctor scanning for ‘butterflies’ was pretty funny, and Icheb’s suggestion that Seven and the Doctor were the only two people he really needed was sweet.
Jeri Ryan portrayed Seven’s jealousy over Icheb very well. I could totally feel for her.
I really wish they would have shown more of Icheb’s ‘goodbyes’. They only showed his farewells to Captain Janeway and Seven. It would have been interesting to see how he said goodbye to the other children.
It was an interesting plot twist that Icheb was a genetically engineered ‘weapon’ to fight the Borg. I was not expecting that.
There were a few cute scenes and amusing comments in “Child’s Play”, but otherwise not much I liked. I found it dragged a bit in parts.
My favorite quote from the episode came after Seven told Icheb that he would be dining with his parents and he replied that they had nothing to talk about. She said, ”Then it will be a very quiet evening.”
Bottom Line: Mostly “Child”, not much “Play”

“Child’s Play” was a well-written, touching story. I especially liked the way it was filmed. The soft lighting enhanced Jeri Ryan’s beauty and I enjoyed the unique fade outs between scenes. I thought the shot of Voyager from underneath was really cool (this occurred in the opening scene after the break with Icheb’s parents sedating him). I also liked the way we were looking down on Icheb and his family though their window while they were looking up at the stars and talking about “home”. Whoever was responsible for these things gets my thanks!
The Science Fair scene was really cute, but Captain Janeway’s expressions and stupid remarks to the children annoyed the heck out of me. “Drones and Queen? I thought we were trying to get these children away from the Borg…”, “Let me know before you take up beekeeping.” and “I’ll remember to bring my coat.” were just awful! Yuck.
I liked the scene between the Doctor and Icheb. The little beeping sounds the tricorder made when the Doctor scanned Icheb’s stomach were cute and the butterfly comments were great! I really liked the comment that Icheb made about not needing parents because he had Seven to assist him in his education and the Doctor to care for his medical needs. Makes Seven and the Doctor sound like his adopted parents... Hmmm, sounds good to me! :)
I thought Seven acted very maturely, responsibly and in no way wrongly with her dealings with Icheb’s parents. In the meeting with the parents, the Captain and Seven, I did not find her attitude too harsh. She was asking important questions, and was right to be cautious.
“Interesting isn’t it? With all their (Voyager’s) technology, their opportunity to explore the galaxy, the thing they want most is to get home,” Icheb’s father says to him. I liked this line. I can relate…
Something that I thought might have some future relevance is Icheb’s Science Fair project. Could it be used in Season 7 to help get Voyager home? Also, the genetic code that Icheb carries could somehow be used against the Borg... I guess we’ll have to see if the writers choose to revisit these things...
This was a very sad story. It was about saying goodbye, and going home: which are pretty deep subjects. It also contained the fact that Icheb’s parents betrayed him in the cruelest possible way and were willing to do it again. How horrible. It was also sad to see Icheb’s reaction to it all in the end, where he felt remorseful that he didn’t destroy the Borg sphere for his people. It broke my heart.
Very good, but sad episode. My thumbs are up on this one!
