The Alaska Wildlife Alliance is a non-profit
organization based in Anchorage, Alaska. Our mission is the
protection of Alaska's natural wildlife for its intrinsic value as
well as for the benefit of present and future generations. The
Alliance advocates an ecosystem approach that represents the
non-consumptive values of wildlife.
More than 1.4 million whales
have been killed during this century alone. In the process,
commercial whaling systematically depleted whale population after
whale population. Of the great whales, only the Antarctic minkes
were spared and only as a result of the worldwide moratorium on
commercial whaling coming into force in 1986.

Every day people in Saudi
Arabia suffer violations of their basic human rights. Their
suffering is perpetuated and hidden by a system based on secrecy
and fear, and is largely ignored by the world's government.
30,000
rats drowned at Univ of Texas this week as 3 ft. of water fell as
rain in 5 days. Animals were trapped in lightless caged areas of
basements as part of the USDA, NIH, CDC medical pharmaceutical
complex which inflicts pain on the voiceless. Many researchers put
rescuing their files above rescuing the animals. This is a
university whose 13 billion dollar endowment has been privatized
by George Bush and is subject to capital manipulation by his
friends. NIH has spent some of its 20 billion dollar annual
pharmaceutical (Pfizer, Eli Lilly, Merck, Bristol Myers Squibb,
Novartis, Pharmacia) welfare & anti animal budget at UT and
expects you the taxpayer to fund the replacement victims. UT
spends 80 million
tax dollars a year (not much from its own endowment).

Eric Berger in covering the story for the Chronicle used biased
and ridiculing language to refer to animal rights activists, e.g.
that they 'lamented' and 'seized' upon the situation. He wrote
as if he were a paid proponent of UT research. UT
does heart research rather than telling people to avoid
cholesterol in meat. UT does cancer research rather than informing
us of the carcinogens in meat.
We have only the paid spokespersons of this huge industry as
source
for whether or not UT dogs (whose lungs are removed) and pigs
were rescued.
Meat
Inspectors Say USDA Ignores Humane Slaughter Act
Washington, Friday, June 15, 2001 (Reuters) - Federal
meat inspectors and animal rights groups on Wednesday
accused the U.S. Agriculture Department of allowing
packers to slaughter cattle and hogs while still
conscious, despite regulations mandating livestock be
killed humanely.
The coalition representing 6,700 meat inspectors sent a
petition to Agriculture Secretary Ann Veneman urging
broader authority to enforce the Humane Slaughter Act
(HSA).
Under the act, all animals must be humanely handled and
"stunned" unconscious prior to being hoisted up on the
production line.
In November 1999 and February
2000, WSPA investigators visited a total of ten bear farms across
six provinces in South East, South West and North East China. They
found that conditions represent the worst examples of factory
farming. On average, cages were found to be 0.8m x 1.3m x 2m in
size, a space within which a bear can hardly move, sit up, or even
turn around. On every farm visited, the floors of the bears' cages
were constructed from iron bars, so that the animals are denied
the opportunity to stand or lie on firm ground.
Of all the ways in which bears
are mistreated around the world, the medieval sport of bear
baiting must be the most barbaric and obscene. The setting of pit
bull terriers against bears inflicts appalling suffering on both
animals. This activity, which was once widespread in Europe, is
now only found is rural parts of Pakistan. Thankfully, after five
years of campaigning, there are signs that bear baiting will be
banished from this last stronghold.
Without
teeth or claws, a bear must fight for its life against two

The Navy is about to receive approval to blast the
world's oceans -- and the whales, dolphins, and other marine
life that live in them -- with dangerous sonar. Tell
Congress to withhold funds for this reckless new technology.
