I. Intro
The band saw is an essential machine for any woodshop, be it in the
high school or in everyday industry. An extremely versatile tool, the band
saw can easily cut curves and intricate profiles yet is not as dangerous
as the chop saw or the table saw.
The overall goal is to acquaint the students with how to use the band saw. The students will demonstrate the ability to:
1. Identify the safety points of the band saw.
2. Correctly use the band saw.
3. Identify the main parts of the band saw.
The teacher will introduce the band saw, followed by identifying the
main parts of the band saw. The class will then proceed to the band saw
where the parts will be reviewed. Next, there will be a brainstorming session
as to what some of the possible safety concerns of the band saw are. The
students will then be shown how to safely use the band saw. Finally, the
students will be given a take home worksheet to review the day's lesson.

2. Push stick
3. Wood samples.
1. Be ready to work safely.
2. Introduce the band saw.
3. Discuss the main parts of the band saw.
4. Show the major message for the band saw.
5. Proceed to the band saw and review parts.
6. Discuss the safety concerns in relation to the band saw.
7. Demonstrate the correct operation of the band saw.
8. Hand out the worksheet.
1. Woodwork
2. Metalwork
3. Physics
4. Drafting
The band saw is a relatively safe machine, if not THE safest machine
in the shop. It is therefore not unrealistic to introduce the band saw
to grade 8 students and allow them to use it. With a vivid imagination,
the project possibilities circling around the band saw are endless.
- band saw - guard - table - push stick
- frame - blade - brake
1. Why is the band saw considered a versatile machine?
2. What are the safety concerns when using the band saw?
3. How can we cut a curve without the blade binding?
4. Is the band saw considered a "finishing" machine?
5. What are the two safety zones of the band saw?
The band saw is the perfect introduction to a class of grade 8's and will allow you to focus on activities in the short time they are with you, rather than having to teach many different machines to diversify your projects. In the most dire of situations, a good technology teacher could easily run a full course with only the band saw.
