Young NSD

The history of Northern Shadow Dancers grew from a fashion design and culture studies program out of Dawson Creek, BC. It helped native youth realize their potential through art, design and dance. In 1990 there were only 3 dancers, starting with teadancing around the fire. They were soon being asked to perform for the public. They designed old-style buckskin clothes and started to make a name for themselves. Next year, girls were making fancy outfits and learning the dances from championship dancers from down south. Elders were invited to help the dancers learn the history and meanings to the dances. Soon it was a working dance troupe. They traveled from school to school, giving workshops about history that they had learned. Ending with a performance that everyone was invited to join in. In 1993 and 1994 NSD headed to Vancouver to perform in the First Nations pavillion at the PNE. Soon the group had acquired a sound system, performance lights and fog machine. Working on scripts and having over 10 dancers in the group, including a road crew.

Powwow time, Poundmakers

1992 in Edmonton, AB. Some of the dancers had never been to a powwow. Was awesome to watch and learn from elders. At the same time we were taking part in a art exhibition called 'The Works' festival. All the students had been working on different forms of media art and were invited to perform on the stage also.

Fun activities on the road

When traveling you tend to get bored every now and then, so we explore the city we are in and have fun. This is just one of the activities. Getting our portraits done. Or getting pictures taken at well know sites. Collecting items and memories along the way.
