A Girl Named Mike?

Welcome to my page, first off!
Come on in, take your shoes off, and take a look around!

I am a girl, and I am called Mike. This page is all about me. I know I seem like a bit of a kook to be waisting precious web space with useless information about me, but I figure if Angelfire was big enough to give it to me for free, I had better use it for something!

What's with the name Mike?
Is it short for something? No. Did your parents name you that? No. Do you pronounce that like Mickey Mouse? NO! It's just Mike.
I seem to have a few names, perhaps you'll know me by one of these: Melissa (yes, mum still calls me that), Meisha (the russian word for mouse), Lisa (friends of old will recognize that one), Missy (a high-school favourite), Mel (cringe at the sound), Hey You! (a popular one around my town), or my newest fave, a_girl_called_mike.

A little of my history...

I was born in Kamloops, BC CANADA on May 8,1975. Months later, my family packed up and moved to Calgary, AB. I have little to no memories of this time frame, other than the coffee-table-in-eye incident at my Grandparent's place when I was nearly two. I have a brother, Ryan, (that I love and adore)who is nearly two years older than me, whom, I might add, had nothing to do with the scar incurred. My mother was a hairdresser then, and my dad worked as a heavy-duty mechanic. I went to school in Calgary in the separate system, but spent my last year of high school in the public system. I also went onto SAIT, to study to be a travel counsellor, although I chose not to pursue it as a career.

My parents divorced when I was 16 years old. It broke my heart.

Just about as soon as I could walk, I was dancing. I took pre-school dance classes at age two, and was on the stage at three! I trained at a school called Accent on Dance (Susan Mensinger), later renamed Artistique Performing Arts School. I spent six years with the Young Canadians of the Calgary Stampede as a dancer. While still green, I was a guest with the Alberta Ballet Company for a couple of years. I was also (though not something I often admit to) a cheerleader for our hometown CFL team, the Calgary Stampeders.

Now, when I get the chance, I guest choreograph at schools, community centers, dance studios, amateur theatre groups... whoever will have me! I love children, and I love to dance... put me in a room with both, and I need little else in my life!

My New Life (updated January 5, 2001)

Where to start?
As per usual, things are new since you’ve read up on me last. I’ve made some changes, (some good, some to learn from), but as always, moving in the direction of defining myself. One of these days I’ll figure out what makes me happiest.

It started with a promise made to Alethia. We vowed that we’d stick it out for a year or so in the big city, and then take off to Africa to climb Mt. Kilimanjaro. After a month in Kenya/Tanzania, we were planning to make our way to Switzerland; where Leath would stay on to work for a dear friend’s new “project” with high school students. I would depart, and return to my car payments, rent, cell phone bills, etc… Enter Reality…
We struggled at being independent for months in our little rented house in the NW, before Alethia made the decision to go back to BC to tree-plant for the summer months. This way, she could make some fat cash before we went away. Figuring that I’d only be in Canada for the next four months until we departed for Africa, I decided that taking an apartment lease again would be futile. So, back to mum’s I went again. Somehow, it hurt my pride as a newly established “independent woman” to be living with my folks again. I had it in my head that I wouldn’t be there long, so I made an unconscious decision to not unpack anything except for my clothes and basics. That was May. I am still living out of my boxes.
In March of last year, I took a job at a brand new restaurant called Rockin’ Robin’s. It’s a 50’s-style diner that served the best home cooked foods. I started there as a server. Within about three weeks, I was made a Shift Supervisor. Within months of that, I was promoted to Supervisor. Now, I am second in command, only behind the GM. It’s a really fun atmosphere, and I get along with (most) of the employees. A fun group of kids to party with!
Not solely because of the promotions at work (but a major part of things), a few factors in my life forced me to make the decision of not joining Leath on her trek. I didn’t think I could financially handle a month or six weeks away from my life. Looking back, I smack myself silly for not following through with things.
In the autumn, I decided it would be great to take a short trip to Chicago, and finally meet my online sister, Dancing Queen. I know this is going to sound funny, but I’ve “known” her for a long time, and we’ve been joking about visiting each other for years. So, for her 26th birthday, I cashed in some of my airmiles and went to O’hare. We had a great time for five crazy days. In May, she plans to come up to Canada to compare the night life! (just as a footnote, Calgary is a lot of fun, but NOTHING like Chicago!) I can’t wait for her visit.

I spent New Years Eve with my flock of girlies from the restaurant. We saw my fave band, Wide Mouth Mason (see link below), play at the Round-Up Centre. Those guys rocked. Those guys always rock. If you should get the chance to see them play live, do not pass it up!

That's about enough of me for one sitting. I won't chase you out the door, but there's not much left to see. If things should change, I'll keep you posted! Feel free to come back any time. You're welcome to bring a friend here, too. Be sure to sign my guest book on your way out.
Thanks for stopping by!
